Here's this week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-3-top-25-results-3/

This is about as boring of a week as I can recall in terms of lack of movement but there were only 4 losses amongst top 25 teams last week and all were to FBS or higher ranked FCS opponents. 17 of the top 25 teams are in the Big Sky, CAA, and MVFC... with conference play starting to ramp up there's definitely going to have to be some more movement here shortly.

Did anyone here even consider NAU for a vote?

and of course NAU has nothing else on it resume to earn a vote either.

I did but I had a hard time justifying them in my ballot when they got trucked by my current #25 team (South Dakota) last week. I might be low on USD in which case NAU might be more deserving than I think as well. We'll see.

Full disclosure: not a voter these days so little room to criticize, but I'm a little surprised by EWU not taking a bit more of a dip. A 6 point win over WIU, while giving up 56? Needing OT to beat UNLV. I know a win is a win but I'd think the #7 would handle those teams. xtwocentsx

Agreed. NAU lost to SHSU 42-16 (at home), lost at South Dakota (34-7). Granted they did beat Arizona but 1 good win, 1 not good/not bad loss and one bad loss (for now) doesn't warrant a top 25 vote from me.

LOTS of offense but no defense. Plus MT just last week blew put WIU.

No offense to the Eagle fans, but I've been wondering how they're ranked that high too. I thought they might drop more this week and it would be closer to what I expected but they didn't (well, they dropped 1 spot). It UNLV is a nice win (double OT) since it's FBS, but despite being FBS I don't think they're any better than a middle team in the Big Sky, MVFC or CAA. Plus a D2 win and Western Illinois. xchinscratchx I've got them 5th place in the Big Sky not 7th in the nation.

I also don’t get EWU at 7. Their defense seems very suspect, they seem to fall apart very easily. I dropped them to 14 but am willing to raise them if the defense starts looking more consistent.

No, because they lost to Sam and were boatraced by South Dakota. It made it earlier to vote USD into the top 25.

It's also why Incarnate Word didn't get a sniff from me. Yay you almost beat YSU and you beat a team that's FBS in name only. You still aren't a top 25 team

EWU took a hit from me for the weakness of the win this week. Probably would have dropped more it Delaware had showed up at Rutgers or Weber State had beaten JMU.

A win is a win, unless it raises questions. Giving up 56 to WIU raises questions.

Agreed. Giving up 56 to WIU is NOT good at all. Macomb Illinois is not a difficult environment (from what I have heard) unless you get too bored.

Dewey
Macomb isn't difficult in terms of being hostile but I've heard it presents its own challenges just by being "wierd". You can't fly a charter into there, I'm pretty sure most teams fly into Peoria or the Quad Cities and then bus 90 minutes to Macomb. I've also heard that hotel accommodations are limited in Macomb and no place has meeting spaces large enough for a football team so many teams will stay in Peoria or the Quad Cities the night before and bus into Macomb the day of the game. On top of that I think a lot of players actually prefer to have hostile crowds when they're on the road versus a place where you have to make your own energy and Macomb is definitely the latter of those two.

That's not to say EWU doesn't deserve to get dinged a bit for barely squeaking one out against WIU but it's understandable why visiting teams tend to play a little flat there.

It ain't easy to win in Macomb. Not sure if it's changed, but a few years ago the visiting locker room was damn near a quarter mile from the field. Walking back and forth during pregame and coming out to an empty stadium can't be a very motivating experience.

Yes, anyone here did.

I put them as Biggest Win, for how bad Arizona is they are still a Pac-12 team

Yes, Arizona is still a Pac12 (P5) team. See East Tennessee State over Vanderbilt and where they are ranked by AGS.

Agreed. NAU lost to SHSU 42-16 (at home), lost at South Dakota (34-7). Granted they did beat Arizona but 1 good win, 1 not good/not bad loss and one bad loss (for now) doesn't warrant a top 25 vote from me.

Dewey

I am not so sure that SHSU (and maybe even USD) don't beat a few other teams in the top 25 by similar scores, and both SHSU and USD deserve to be ranked, so...xdontknowx

I'm just curious how people determine what the most significant win/loss is. We have had this discussion before. The reason I ask is that it looks like the most significant win for the poll was JMU. Since they didn't gain any ground and the vote totals were almost precisely the same as last week, how is it significant? This isn't a critique, it is simply an inquiry.

For me a significant win told me something I did not know before whether it is a blow out win against a decent or better team, or barely winning against someone who they should have beaten soundly. I could use the Eastern Washington game a s an example of the latter. Likewise the most significant loss is someone almost winning when they shouldn't have been close, or someone beaten soundly when they should have won. I could use UTC's loss as example of the former. AND, in addition to any of the above, a win or loss that results in moving a team significantly up or down in my poll. Again, this is how I determine it. So my brain short circuits a little when I see JMU as the most significant win, when absolutely nothing has changed in the poll, and they were favored to begin with. I can however see Weber's loss as fairly significant. As a matter of fact, that was my choice.

I'm not going to help you gain any insight since that's the same way I approach it. This week I found it hard to pick most significant win/loss since there wasn't much movement in my poll. Most significant is a game that , as you said, showed something new or confirmed a suspicion about over/under-rated, which typically shows up as a significant movement in my poll.

JMU's win wasn't significant with respect to my poll placements of the teams. EWU's win might have been the most significant (in a negative way) if I'd had them ranked as highly as the aggregate, but I already had them ranked lower than the AGS consensus so again, it wasn't too significant.

THIS ^^^^

Picked South Dakota for most significant win, because of their last two sound wins. Although Northern Arizona was in the running, they just made my poll, and quite honestly, they helped boost USD a bit as well. I think if Weber State had won, you might have been able to make an argument for Weber (win) or JMU (loss) then, because I think we kind of knew what JMU is, but we were unsure of what Weber is.

As for most significant loss, there were really no poll movers or completely unexpected losses. I went with Jackson State, simply because they had a close loss to an FBS, and it keeps me thinking about them a bit. Chattanooga also could have fit this bill with their showing against Kentucky.

Significant wins and losses, at least for me, are ones that really tip the scale and produce the most movement or rethinking of a team.

I have picked a win like this that's viewed negatively or a loss that's viewed positively (like a close loss to a good FBS team) as most significant in the past. In fact this week I almost picked EWU as most significant win but went with JMU because of how well they handled Weber.

NAU beats a P5 team and receives no votes nor selected as most significant win.

Did anyone here even consider NAU for a vote?

and of course NAU has nothing else on it resume to earn a vote either.

NAU's other two results strongly suggest they aren't a top-25 caliber team. I suspect their win over UA was more about Arizona being a dumpster fire than about NAU being good.

I have too. I interpret it as most significant, not most positive (win) or negative (loss).

I also try to avoid using the same game for the win and the loss (it's seldom the most significant on both sides).

MSW, teams that move up by most slots.
MSL, teams that move down by most slots.

No way they get a vote after getting destroyed the first 2 games, but I voted it most significant because they beat AZ and prevented going 0-3.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but you guys are disrespecting Monmouth. They have a QB named Muskett. I mean seriously, that's pretty awesome. Then you factor in Greene and Farri and they one of the best offenses in FCS. I know it's hard to believe, but they do play football in other conferences besides the Big Sky, MVFC, and CAA. But you wouldn't know it by looking at this poll. 13 of the top 14 teams are from the "Big 3".

What has a team from outside the Big 3 done to prove they are Top 15? Honestly.

I don't think a Top 25 FCS team loses to Middle Tenn St by 35. I don't think a Top 25 team eeks out a win against Fordham.

Respect is earned.

I also find this interesting because JSU gets blanked by UAB, beats easily the worst P5 in the country, and then struggle bussed our way past 0-3 UNA at home and these fools are still voting for us.

It's literally hypocrisy at it's finest.

Unfortunately I have not been able to watch them. Their resume isn't good yet, but I still have them relatively high, on par with poll. Are they overrated? I'm giving them some benefit of doubt until they prove otherwise with better competition.

IMHO.....I think Jacksonville State and Northern Iowa are similar in that they are very recognizable names and that helps them stay higher in the FCS polls. The track record is there whether or not it is justified.

I think the Hens overrated at #10. We have some injuries on the OL and it shows. Luckily our QB is very good at running and at throwing on the run. Should be ranked in the mid teens, IMO

I’ve watched them and haven’t been very impressed so far, the benefit of the doubt from the beginning of the season is gone. I have the Hens at #16.
