I’ve been watching off & on and haven’t heard it uttered yet.

Glad they are doing an FCS game; glad they are doing an HBCU match-up. Would just think they might mention that these teams are in FCS, at least. Have they?

America as a whole doesn't care about or identify with "fcs" or "fcs schools." America identifies with SEC, Big XII, PAC XII, B1G, ACC, ... P5 schools.

Our constituents identify with HBCU, not "fcs."

I dunno, I get the sense the average “College Gameday” watcher isn’t exactly someone who contributes to the SWAC’s high attendance numbers.

I too find it strange there was no mention of D1 or FCS. I’m sure there are people out there asking why they’re highlighting a D2 game.

Outside of the South or within circles in the North where people attended these schools, I don't think many people would know what HBCU football is, period. People might recognize Howard but if you rattled off the names, "Jackson State, Alcorn State, Southern U. Prairie View, Norfolk State, Alabama A&M" people would just think you're naming B-list state universities in the southern part of the country.

A couple years ago I was at a holiday party and the Celebration Bowl was on ESPN. When somebody mentioned never having heard of these schools and asked what game it was, I said that it was effectively the "Black College National Championship". Someone heard this and immediately chided me for making what they thought was a demeaning racist remark. That tells you right there how little people in general know about HBCU football.

When I was listening the announcer thought that it was holding in the end zone but they said that it wasn't. Later they called intentional grounding and a ten second runoff so the game was over. The stats still show 26-21 and I don't think that will change.

Nah not with that matchup. NCCU doesn't travel well enough to get those types of numbers. The next few years you'll get much better numbers with Bama State, FAMU, Jackson State, and Southern playing in the Challenge. Alcorn accounted for about 80% of the fans. Central may have brought 1,000 people.

NMSU's roster wasn't spectacular to begin with but, after they cancelled their 2020 season, the vast majority of their impact players hit the transfer portal. The Aggies have tried to replenish a massive chunk of their depth with freshmen and juco players and it's almost like they're starting the program over again. 2021 will not be pretty in Las Cruces.

(Unless, of course, you enjoy the stark beauty of the New Mexico desert which surrounds Aggie Memorial Stadium. In which case, it'll be a mixed bag.)

Central travels fine. COVID had a lot to do with the reduced numbers. NC folks are wary of our southern brethren.

Baylor-grad RG3 was raving about the HBCU experience. We kept hearing about how Alcorn State was ranked #2. I got the feeling that the announcers were reading a script at times. And, having seen HBCU bands in person, I don't think ESPN's halftime show really captured the HBCU band experience.

I suspect ESPN was promoting HBCU football as a niche product to hopefully bring in better ratings than their MAC and Sun Belt telecasts, but the telecast came across much like FCS playoff telecasts where the announcers usually know very little about either team.

Lol how do you know what RG3 has experienced? He was in DC , he could have went over to Howard and fellowshipped. Didn't have an issue with the telecast or the game. Band coverage could have been better, but ESPN isn't going to miss advertising dollars to show a band

I think it was a combination of maybe this year we're a bit better than we have been in the recent past and Ball State just wasn't playing as well as they did last year. Also, if I remember correctly, their biggest weakness is against a strong passing game, which is about the only thing we have had going for us lately.

Last year, we had no run game, a good but sometimes shaky pass game, and a decent defense that would usually run out of gas in the second half because the offense couldn't sustain any drives. We were last in the FCS in time of possession because of it.

This year, at least in the first game, we didn't have much of a run game (although it was a little better than it was in the spring) and a much better passing game that helped sustain drives more. The defense was about the same or seemed a bit better and didn't hit that wall until a bit into the 4th quarter. We actually ended up winning time of possession too. Special teams really helped too...dropped 2 punts within 2 yards of the goal line.

Don't know how that'll translate to the rest of the season, but I'm hopefully optimistic that if we play like that (assuming we clean up some of the first-game mistakes) we could end up roughly in the middle of the conference, which would be pretty decent considering we were picked to finish last this year.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm not quite convinced yet. I didn't really get a chance to see much of your game yesterday, just flipped over after ours was done and caught the OT period. I know you guys have a much better running game than we do (not that that's hard to accomplish), which is great if you need to eat up clock time. Won't be long until we find out for sure, since we open up conference play at the Ice Castle in 3 weeks.
