High School -- Max quarterbacked St. Patrick/St. Vincent High, coached by Marion Blanton, to an 11-2 overall record, first-place finish in the Bay Shore League with a 5-0 mark and the CIF-North Coast Section Class A championship last fall with a 43-28 victory over Salesian. Schulz earned All-Metro East Bay honorable mention as selected by the San Francisco Chronicle. Also a sprinter in track, Schulz earned a scholarship from the East Bay Football Officials Association and was selected to play in the East-West Charity All-Star Football Classic, which was played July 14 at Napa Memorial Stadium.
