Phil Rizzuto, the Hall of Fame shortstop who went on to fame for his unique broadcasting style, died late Monday night. He was 89.
His death was confirmed by the Yankees. Rizzuto had been in declining health for several years and was living at a nursing home in West Orange, N.J.

I have always hated the Yankees but loved scooter. I would watch or listen to Yankee games just to hear him broadcast the games! He was a true original

I'm with you on that. I can't stand the Yankees but have always liked Scooter. I still remember as a kid listening to him broadcast games, nothing like him.

I grew up in NE PA as well. I remember watching the Yanks on wpix channel 11 out of NY with scooter on the mike. Now of course if I wanted Yankees games ( couldnt imagine why) it would probably cost an arm and a leg on direct tv or something.

Agreed. Can't stand the Yankees, but 'Scooter' was a true original and one of those players whose enthusiasm was contagious. BTW--did he actually do the recording with Meatloaf in "Love by the Dashboard Lights" or did they splice a tape of his broadcasts??

I'm a Mets fan, but I always enjoyed the Scooter. A real class guy. There aren't many like him these days.

Even though I hated the Yanks, I grew up in NJ, watching the Yankee games, and enjoying him. Somedays never knew what he was talking about, but it was enjoyable.
