It's kind of interesting comparing the preseason rankings from last year to this year for the teams that didn't play in the spring. Montana, Montana St, Central Arkansas, and Sacramento St all dropped from their 2020 preseason ranking. I think voters struggled with where to place those teams... I know I did. But seems like the teams who played in the spring got the benefit of the doubt.

i think them and AP gonna surprise some folks. Like APs hyper coach, i think he was a finalist for our HC. And Carthel..I think he’ll have sfa playing good until he gets em in ncaa troubles

Well that was debated a while back but I run it to a total of 40 teams which cuts out a lot in the preseason poll as there were another bunch of low total teams...I think 56 total teams got at least a point.

By mid year it normally starts to get down to the 40 or less number of it's own volition.

My first preseason poll (I voted last spring but not for the preseason one). I’m guessing it’s easier than most because most teams will stay pretty intact. I struggled to decide where the teams that opted out should go.

Missouri State: MVFC co-champ
UAPB: SWAC West Division champ
SHSU: FCS National champ and SLC champ
EKU: Opportunity Bowl champion

SFA: loaded with FBS transfers...falls short

Having posted that, it could be a great year.....or a tough one in our new conference.

Just 14 out of over 100 players on the roster are FBS transfers at SFA.

Maybe half of those actually saw action in the FBS.

SFA will be competitive based on their depth and experience.

What they did at Memphis at the end of the 2020 season where they travelled only 68 players and over 48 of those were freshmen and they hung for 3 quarters before giving out has me excited for 2021.

This team is stacked at every position except QB.

I had em in. But I probably missed another team. I actually thought about them, but had little data and I just forgot to deep deeper. I wont say who.

One thing though. I read above a lot of people questioning why so and so was where they are, compared to so and so who they might have beaten up on. Last year was just that (or the year before). Teams change coaches, players (although this year will rank as the probably the highest ever returning starters percentage), they have injuries, transfers, etc. I really think any rank based on purely last years results is flawed. I moved a few team up way higher than last year's end result, and vise a versa. That was based on additional, new data. It's pretty much a crap shoot until kickoff though, so its no big deal. We all know what preseason polls are worth anyway.

I don’t know how it works for everyone else but my preseason polls usually miss on at least 10 schools…some really good schools are totally absent from my first poll and others are quickly exposed as being overrated. That said, I feel really good about Sam as #1 based on who they are bringing back. Even so, any of the top 5-6 teams could win it all.

What has JSU done to deserve a ranking? The team hasn't beaten anyone of note in 5 years.

Looks like JSU beat Tenn Tech and Murray State when they were top 25 teams last Spring and only lost by 4 against #5 Delaware. Beat FBS FIU and gave Florida St a good game Fall 2020. All many voters are saying is that based on their 10-3 record over the past year, JSU is probably a 15 thru 25 team. I believe the record supports that - which 25 FCS teams are you going to put in front of them? Don't be concerned, with their 2021 schedule, if JSU really does suck, it will be painfully obvious to all, and you'll get your wish - they won't be in the playoffs. Who knows, you might get your ultimate wish and Grass will be put out in the pasture.

Looks like JSU beat Tenn Tech and Murray State when they were top 25 teams last Spring and only lost by 4 against #5 Delaware. Beat FBS FIU and gave Florida St a good game Fall 2020. All many voters are saying is that based on their 10-3 record over the past year, JSU is probably a 15 thru 25 team. I believe the record supports that - which 25 FCS teams are you going to put in front of them? Don't be concerned, with their 2021 schedule, if JSU really does suck, it will be painfully obvious to all, and you'll get your wish - they won't be in the playoffs. Who knows, you might get your ultimate wish and Grass will be put out in the pasture.

Based on talent evaluation, Samford should be fairly highly ranked, but certainly not deserving due to past failures.

Hindsight, but I feel very validated for not including Monmouth or Jacksonville State in my top 25 (we'll see if that holds up vs. FCS competition) and somewhat validated for having Samford #13.

OTOH, Chattanooga at #9 was way too bullish compared to the rest of y'all. We'll see the rest get dismantled in due time thought :)
