Last year we had a discussion and vote on how the names would be presented. Here is a review:

https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?243366-Team-Name-List-Changes-for-2020

There are also several other issues from another thread as far as how teams with "State" in the name want to be repped going forward.

Independent
North Dakota Fighting Hawks -------> To MVFC in 2020

-----------------
Additions for the 2019 year will be:
Are there any?
-----------------
North Dakota is independent until next season unless someone has other info.
-----------------
I am including UNA under the schedules as a Big South member for 2019.

They will not be eligible for the AGS Poll until they are eligible for either their conference title or a national title when they complete their transition which unfortunately is not until 2022 according to their SID.
-----------------
Names to be pulled from the list(s) are:

Savannah State Tigers
Anyone else?
-----------------
Hampton is also a new member to the Big South for 2019 and have been added to that group.
-----------------
Presby is to remain in Big South until 2020 form what I see. Any other opinions on this one let me know.

http://www.pioneer-football.org/news...eague-in-2021/
-----------------

So with these issues out there for discussion what else am I missing? Are there any other teams going in or coming out or moving around for either the schedule or the AGS Poll for 2019?

SHSU will change
Nichols will change
Grambling...McNeese? Need to work this out.

New conference(s) and teams will nee to be added and fixed up etc.

I assume you'll include the second "l" in Nicholls.

For as long as I've been aware, Grambling has always been Grambling without the "State" in newspaper score lists and television mentions so it makes sense to drop "State" unless Tiger alums object.

McNeese recently is a mixed bag when looking at results in various places.

And even though the Bearkats want to be just Sam Houston, I will personally always abbreviate the school as SHSU (unless they prefer the acronym for Sam Houston Institute of Technology :D

I am pretty sure that most McNeese fans prefer just "McNeese," which is pronounced as in Mac.Neese*, in case anyone was wondering. When the McNeese baseball team qualified for the NCAA tournament, the selection show announced it as and the graphics showed McNeese and not "State."
I don't see how leaving off the state part would confuse anyone as to who is being referred to.

*McNeese is named for John McNeese, a Yankee from New York of Scottish descent who came to Louisiana after fighting for the Union in the Civil War.

I'd take it from the Sam Houston Athletics' Department, this is taken from football game notes.....

What to call us

SAM HOUSTON - Although traditionally referred to as Sam Houston State, we ask that all media entities refer to our athletics teams as simply Sam Houston. Please only use Sam Houston State University when referring to the University in official capacity. If an abbreviation is needed, SHSU is acceptable. Please DO NOT use SH or SHS as abbreviations. Please DO NOT use references such as Sam Houston St., Sam Hou St. or any other variations. Our teams, both male and female, are to be referred to as Bearkats or simply Kats on second reference. Please DO NOT capitalize the K unless using only Kats.

CCSU did something similar, but less formal, a few years back when they updated athletic markings.

The university name remains Central Connecticut State University and CCSU is the only valid abbreviation allowed. However, our Athletics Department regularly uses "Central Connecticut", to refence athletic teams, the primary athletics logo omits the "State," and some of our the secondary marks include "CC"

Are they ever going to change the name to Connecticut State? That would be even better. I think that going from Mankato State University to Minnesota State-Mankato was a great improvement for us.

Not anytime in the near future. :(

CCSU is now governed by the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU) Board of Regents. This higher education system includes 4 state universities (Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western) and 12 community colleges - basically everyone except the UConn campuses.

I read somewhere (can't lay my hands on it) and have also heard it on one of McNeese's sports broadcasts something to the tune of this: The first time you refer to the team, McNeese State is proper. For subsequent references, McNeese is preferred.

That sounds like the treatment of other names in articles etc. so it makes sense.

First time is most professional/respectful and then more relaxes from then on is always the gist I took away from that.

I am currently working on this list for the AGS Poll (slowly) and since this list is for AGS Poll it only includes teams eligible for the poll so make not of that.

Professor and OhioHen you both have access to amend this as well since you are assisting with AGS Poll duties this upcoming season. Please notice I am color marking changes for us all to see easily.

Ohio if you do any changes use a light blue and I suppose Prof you should use a light green. xlolx

Okay, I'll go change that back then. I was unsure on that one so figured I'd just go without it. I will err on the side of the sports departments. We've had a back and forth about a difference between the actual university name and what athletics wants to go by.

I sort of discarded the first link since it was the university site and the 2nd one I don't seem to get too much for access.

Turned the ad blocker off and I see the site and you have guided me correctly. Thanks Hoya.

Davidson received 97 of the maximum 100 points possible, with coaches unable to vote for their own team, with San Diego close behind at 93 points – making those two teams the clear frontrunners. Drake and Dayton round out the top four with 67 and 62 points, respectively.
Presbyterian, which will make its first run at the league title this season, got 59 points and a fifth-place nod from the league’s head coaches. Valparaiso (55 points) and Morehead State (51) followed in sixth and seventh place.
St. Thomas was picked to finish eighth (36 points) in its first PFL season. Marist and Stetson followed in a tie for ninth place (35 points each) with Butler (15) rounding out the 11-team poll.

The only thing that I caught missing was the Trailblazers nickname for Dixie State.

When does the name change to Utah Tech?

Latest articles on their athletics site call them Trailblazers so gotta assume that is correct.

Yes sir, they are the bane of my existence apparently...or at least show some sloppy editing. xlolx I had them out earlier, somehow grabbed the list from an earlier comparison on my sheet. I corrected it fairly quickly but you got me before I did apparently.

I also had Sav St. in there...xlolx

From the Dixie State Schedule thread the answer to a couple of teams being in the AGS Poll is...

Both Tarleton and Dixie State are apparently in the AGS Poll this season. According to WAC Media Relations:
"They are eligible to be named WAC Champions but they are not eligible for selection to the FCS Playoffs."

Merrimack is NOT eligible for the NEC AQ.

Also, Robert Morris is no longer in the NEC. They should be listed in the Big South.

I assume Trailblazers mascot will remain, but the Dixie State name is scheduled to be changed to Utah Tech. Still needs approval from Utah Legislature.

Yes, I was inquiring about the NEC Title too though because like Dixie if they were eligible for that then they are in the poll. Unfortunately they are not eligible for NEC title either.

From previous posts that looks like it will change for next season probably.

As per PFL Media Relations:

St. Thomas is eligible for the PFL championship this season.

Now I think we have a new problem with AGS Poll that we should resolve.

Was updating my "AGS Pick 5 Survival League" with the winners from Week 9, and I realized that I have been using Long Island Sharks (with "University" omitted). I was just wondering why in the official AGS poll naming list, Long Island (University) is the only one with "University" in the name and should a change be considered?

I'll hae to go look at this. If you think of it bump it up on Thurs. or Fri. but I will not be changing names on the poll until after the season is over now. Thanks for bringing it up as I never noticed or thought about it. Whenever I got the names I went to the official sources to see what they referred to themselves as.

FYI - "Long Island University" is the correct full reference, similar to "Boston College" and "Boston University"

Prior to the merger of the athletic departments, they most recently used "LIU-Brooklyn" and "LIU-Post"

No worries, and I did not expect any changes this season. It was more for my benefit trying to make sure my list is consistent with AGS's list, and I figured I'd post while I remembered.

Thanks for the explanation. If they are merged, then there is no need to have "-Brooklyn" or "-Post", but is there a reason to have "University" then either? Of course, "Long Island" would still be needed for identification, but in the case of "Boston College" and "Boston University", the additions are distinguishing. There is nothing to distinguish for Long Island (or am I missing something?).

North Dakota State University is the correct full reference as well (ignoring the North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science name, I have never seen them referred to as the NDS Bison, except here). This could probably be said for many (most) of the teams on the list where "University" is dropped. Just thought it was interesting that Long Island was the only team listed where "University" was still included in the name.
