JaMarkus McFarland, one of the most heralded prep players to come out of nearby Lufkin, Texas, joined head coach Colby Carthel’s coaching staff in January of 2019 as the Lumberjacks’ defensive tackles coach. He arrives back at his east Texas roots after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma (2016-18).

McFarland's impact on the recruiting trail has made an immediate impact for the Lumberjacks, as SFA signed the top FCS recruit in the 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes, both on the defensive line. McFarland's efforts contributed heavily to SFA garnering FCS recruiting classes ranked in the Top 5 in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
