From a mileage standpoint, It should take 7-8 hours, max, to drive from Hammond to San Antonio and it has taken 10-11 hours the last several times I’ve driven it. It’s an HORRENDOUS drive and I drive all over the south for a living. If you made it from SA to NO in 9.5 hours, you had extremely optimal conditions. That said, in 9.5 hours or less, and in more relaxed fashion, I can drive from Hammond to Jacksonville, FL and nearly to Tampa. I can drive to Knoxville, Nashville, Clarksville, Chattanooga, Carbondale, Ill. Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, Atlanta, Macon and many other FCS destinations to our north and east. I would rather drive to all of those places, even losing an hour, than drive to San Antonio. IT. IS. AWFUL.

That’s because of the I-10 bridge over the Mississippi going to and from Baton Rouge. The traffic on that bridge is horrible. That makes the traffic on I-635 going around Dallas seem tame, which that drive is not fun.

That’s only one part of it. Any kind of accident on the Atchafalaya Basin and you’re screwed. West of Houston to San Antonio Is brutal—Lake Charles through Beaumont is awful—it’s just a terrible drive on the whole.

Lafayette to Beaumont sucks. Louisiana roads in general are pretty crappy, but that stretch has two lanes when it needs double that.

Obviously it sucks driving 10 hours to central Texas from the southeastern tip of Louisiana. But if that’s as bad as it gets in the SLC driving wise? You have it pretty good. IMO their positive of good football outweighs their negative of poor basketball and a far drive for any team not named HBU or Lamar. But I wouldn’t blame any Louisiana fans for wanting to keep UIW.

Also HBU was the biggest realignment mistake add of the any D1 conference ever. I’m convinced. It’s so embarrassing. Football, basketball, baseball, across the board they’ve got the worst facilities of any D1 school. ZERO fans. Who thought the Houston market would be captivated by that aluminum dump in Sharpstown? Wish they’d boot em, but it won’t happen.

Kid lives in Lafayette. The city is worse than the interstate. Fricking horrible. Cool city, sucky roads.

Lafayette to Lake Chuck is usually a pretty easy going hour! Toss up from there. Usually a phantom wreck in vinton, construction in orange, wreck leaving beaumont, multiple wrecks in Houston and some kinda crapola in sealy.

Is the old bridge a better option than I10 in Baton Rouge? The plaquemine ferry? Sabine Pass? Kinder? Theres gotta be something better than i10 Baton Rouge? Something the locals know?

Mr. Lion, who I have much respect for, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that your Lions will be making the easy trip to Lake Chuck quite often the next few years. (Honestly, it is much better than driving to Katy or Corpus Christi.) Enjoy the nice beaches, casinos, and restaurants, and SW Louisiana hospitality.

The bad news is that your softball Lady Lions who had only 2 losses at home all year (kudos on their great record-breaking seaon!) now have 4 losses, the two new losses to the McNeese Cowgirls who have won back-to-back SLC championships both times on the Lady Lions turf. So much for home field.

Congrats and good luck in the tournament. Rick Fremin has done a helluva job building our program but we’re not quite there yet.

HBU's fans actually filled up the center of our (PV) east side stands when they visited last fall. That was a pleasant surprise. Even met a few of their fans who flew in from Cali.

Another surprise was Nicholls'. They had quite a few fans at our place... and actually brought their band to our diggs. Competitive game; competitive and spirited atmosphere. (The year they won the SLC w/ all-world Forcade @ QB)

McNeese easily has the best traveling fanbase in the conference IMO. Granted, they are in the middle of everyone. But they always bring a ton of fans to Bowers compared to the other Louisiana schools. I can only imagine what HBU’s stadium looks like when they play McNeese.

UIW actually brings a solid crowd to Huntsville most years.

McNeese doesn't travel like they used to. I can't remember the last time they've filled up more than a couple of sections (if that) in Strawberry Stadium. On the other hand, Nicholls nearly fills up our visitor's side, even in bad years. It's a bitter rivalry, but still.

I think I can speak for most McNeese fans when I say that as long as I can see the Pokes on the live stream, there's not any real reason to go sit in Strawberry Stadium or experience Hammond. Once was more than enough ;)

That’s a bit surprising, considering Hammond is probably closer to Lake Charles than we are. When McNeese played us last spring they brought a great crowd. Filled up most of the allotted two sections on the visitors side iirc. Hope we keep scheduling them as an FBS team, if they don’t join us in CUSA that is.

Personally I hope they stay in the WAC, we could use another somewhat Western FCS Conference, and maybe down the road get Cal Poly and UC-DAVIS to join for Football only to help unbloat the Big Sky.

Incarnate Word will not have to pay any money for its decision to stay put. The Cardinals hadn’t signed any final moving papers meaning UIW is still a SLC member considered in good standing.
“Since they never left the league they never had to re-apply,” said Grant. “They are just considered a full member and we move forward.”

So, I'm guessing that the conference will either have to scramble to reschedule all fall sports schedules or they had a contingency plan for this situation. I guess we will find out soon.

The Cardinals are expected to play a full Southland schedule, including football, this season. UIW is the defending SLC football champs, claiming the program’s first title last fall with a 7-1 record. It’s only loss was in Lake Charles to McNeese State.
Grant had previously said the league had plans in place if the Cardinals decided to stay.
“We are working on finalizing those right now,” Grant said. “We want to make the least amount of changes necessary for our teams, players and fans.”

The Cardinals decision means that no team will have to play a conference foe twice in football. Each team had one home-and-home conference series scheduled. For McNeese that was to be Nicholls.
“We don’t want to do that any more,” said Grant. “This should give us good balance to our scheduling.”

Football should be easy, just replacing UIW with one of the games we were playing the same team twice

Jim Gazzolo (American Press) posting on GeauxCowboysdotcome Facebook group: "For those asking, no McNeese did not give up any of the tournaments that are scheduled over the next few years in Lake Charles. However, the league will rotate football media day between LC and San Antonio over the next few seasons starting here in a few weeks. [My note: BOOOOOO!]That is an effort to help Incarnate Word get some local media attention in San Antonio if that is possible.
So no local games will be lost. The real thing about all this is once the WAC lost Sam Houston and New Mexico football, it was no longer worth moving into. It's just a long, expensive flights to Riverside, California, Phoenix and Seattle to play basketball. Only Grand Canyon draws a crowd so it is a waste of time and money, with money being the key."

Hey, Puddin, I went to the Big Red forum. I registered for an account long ago and have a username and password (as I do for the other SLC and WAC forums that I can find). Someone asked a question that I wanted to attempt to answer, but for some reason I cannot log in. If no one else answered this question, maybe you can help.

The question was how could Lamar afford to pay the exit fee to the WAC all of a sudden? (paraphrasing) When Lamar held the press conference back in April (?) to announce it would return to the SLC, the one attended by Commissioner Grant and McNeese President Burckel and AD Schroyer, Grant said then that the SLC would help Lamar with the exit fee. I am just assuming that happened. I would also imagine that the buy out will be done over time, but I may be wrong about that.

Is there a Texas A&M-Commerce messageboard or Facebook group???

There are about three McNeese fan Facebook Groups, you can request to join. The oldest one and the one that I helped start is located here:

If this link doesn't work for you, try searching for Geauxcowboys Dot Com Fan Group. (yeah, Dot Com is spelled out and the reason why is a long story).

I would also imagine that the buy out will be done over time, but I may be wrong about that.

the big red forum is pretty dead. Not sure anybody really runs it anymore. Just a handful of oldtimers on it. Theyve switched to facebook. Theres also a couple other LU facebook groups. None are worth a hoot.

i have no clue as to what was involved. That info is above my pay grade. Im just a lowly holder of seats on the 20.

This was a weird happening. I went to the Commerce Facebook group on the day they officially came into the conference. While I was typing something, a Lamar box popped up. I clicked on it and, I think, I liked (joined) the Lamar group. ?

Doc is correct. ZemsGems is my daily go to. It's not always about McNeese or football or even sports, but when it is, he gives analysis that can be eye opening.

The Facebook group that Doc gave the link to is also very good, and Gazzolo posts there. You can also friend and follow him. Several of his Lake Charles American Press articles can be found online, and he sometimes posts them to the Facebook group.

As for the SLC, I honestly think that the majority of fans in the conference are good people and dedicated to their teams. However, we all have our bad eggs.

I will admit there are a few teams that I do not particularly care for, but I have respect for their fans who post here. As time goes by, you Commerce Lion fans will develop your favorites, your rivals, and just those you like to dislike.

Someone, maybe you, had asked about tailgating. Doc can fill you in on that. I would say McNeese has the best tailgating in the SLC but, unless the SLC football schedule really gets messed up, you will have to wait until next football season to find out.

Zem knows about the Commerce Lions. Here are some of his recent thoughts on SLC football:

TEXAS FOOTBALL PICKS SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE
"Dave Campbell’s football annual is out, and they have given their opinion on the Southland Conference. Unfortunately, they went to press thinking UIW was in the WAC. They like SLU, Nicholls State, McNeese, Northwestern State, Houston Baptist, and Texas A&M-Commerce. I think they are wrong on two accounts. I have yet to do all of the research, but Commerce is a strong program and will not finish last. I expect UIW would be picked 2nd and everyone else would slide down a spot."

Zem and the rest of us are concerned with what will be done with the football schedule with the additions of UIW and Lamar:
"The concern I have is being placed on a road trip to UIW for 2022. Subbing Lamar for Mississippi College is one thing but adding UIW on the road would be another thing. In my opinion, the four toughest opponents for McNeese this fall will probably be UIW, SLU, Nicholls State, and A&M-Commerce. No disrespect to the Demons, but Commerce has been a D2 power much like UCA, Tarleton St., and ACU and very tough at home....[Zem discusses Ryan Ivey who was at McNeese and Commerce and is now AD at SFA.]
Don’t let the [Lions] 7-4 record of last year fool you because there were circumstances that led to the “off” year. Injuries at key positions hurt as well as A&M-Commerce deciding to skip 2020 season due to Covid. The football staff lost some players, and the lack of depth and experience had to play a part in 2021."

Texas A&M - Commerce was the doormat of the LSC until Coach Carthel came along in 2013 to turn it into a powerhouse.

The Lions had not had a winning season since 2001, and no playoffs since 1995 and Carthel went 7-5 his first season as head coach, going on to win 3 straight conference titles (2014, 2015, 2016) before winning the National Championship in 2017. TXAMC was ranked in the Top 25 his last 5 seasons.

He's now doing the same thing at SFA, taking over a program with 1 winning season in 7 years. His first 3 seasons 3-9; 6-4; 8-4 (Playoffs and ranked #18)

It will be interesting to see him do it on the FBS level, when he goes elsewhere after bringing to life yet another dead football program like Texas A&M - Commerce and now SFA.

Absolutely. And, contrary to the article excerpt shared, UCA, Tarleton, and ACU were never D2 "powers" by any means. Good programs but never contenders for the natty.

Yes, I root for Commerce as well, nice to have a Division I program just an hour away from where I grew up.

My grandmother graduated from Commerce, back in the 1930s when it was East Texas State Teachers College, and my Dad went a semester in the 1960s when it was East Texas State College, before he transferred to UT-Austin.

We enjoy having Carthal, he is a great coach, finds the best coaches to surround himself with, a hell of a recruiter, and he cracks everybody up, he loves to have fun.

Ivey just brought another TAMC coach over to SFA, Coach Richie Bruister, to be the new head coach of the softball program, as our previous head coach got hired to coach at New Mexico.

Yep! Y'all should do that -- NOT leave, but threaten to -- and maybe you could get the league office moved to Hammond!

Seriously, that has always been one of McNeese's big gripes about the SLC is that it always seemed to favor the Texas schools. I know SLU is not happy about the deal McNeese has managed, but most Cowboy fans only felt it was justified after years of the Texas schools having their way.

FRISCO, Texas – Defending Southland Conference football champion UIW leads the way with 16 total selections on the league’s preseason all-conference teams, announced on Wednesday. The preseason all-conference teams are presented by B1 Patches (https://buyb1.com/).

Reigning FCS All-America honorees Taylor Grimes and Kelechi Anyalebechi headline the Cardinals’ contingent at wide receiver and linebacker, respectively. The reigning Southland Newcomer of the Year, Grimes led the nation with 15 touchdown receptions and ranked fourth among FCS receivers in receptions per game (7.2). A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, Anyalebechi racked up a program single-season record 130 total tackles.

Nicholls transfer Lindsey Scott Jr. occupies the first-team quarterback slot....(Click the link above to read more).

The preseason poll will be revealed next Wednesday, July 20, to kick off the 2022 Southland Conference Football Media Day Presented by B1 Patches. The live event will be held at the L’Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La., and can be seen on ESPN+.

Returning all-conference selections from the previous season are automatically named to the preseason all-conference teams and may advance to higher team slots if they are vacated by non-returning players. Open positions are nominated and voted upon by the league’s head coaches.

You must be as old as me! The only away game we went to that year was to Sugar Bowl to watch the Dawgs beat Notre Dame for the natty.

For the Florida game we watched it on tv, probably a 21” screen though I don’t remember for sure, with the volume turned down so we could listen to Munson. Sigh, Oconee County memories…

here in the land of 2 yards and a cloud of dust, the forward pass is still frowned upon by our ex air force coach.

We shall see. We might do that if we can find a quarterback and wide receivers. Too many of our receivers did not help Cody Orgeron a bit with so many dropped balls. It was pathetic!

Goff has taken Mumme's air raid offense and, like Leach and Holgorsen and others, has modified it. Last season at Valdosta State, the Blazers threw for a ton of yardage, but also had THREE 1,000-yard rushers (one was the quarterback)!

If a team has a good offensive line and can run the ball like the North Dakota State Bison do and control the clock, especially at the latter stages of a game to wear out the opponents' defense, I have no problem with that.

You’re right on the media coverage. Sam Houston can’t get much media attention at all from the Houston media, despite Randy McIlvoy, who is the sports director at KPRC (Houston’s NBC affiliate) being a Sam alum. SFA barely gets any coverage on KTRE, which is the local ABC affiliate here.

Houston Baptist is apparently changing their name to Houston Christian. Also looks like it’s effective immediately, as their social media accounts have all rebranded. Going to be funny to see “HCU” playing on a field that says “HBU” on it. Wish these losers would close their doors, or at the very least drop football. They ruined the Southland.

Well, it's finally happening and long overdue. This project should be a game changer for our program and take our football offices/locker room/training facilities from among the worst in the country at the FCS level, to among the very best. Should be similar in size and cost as the new facility at Montana State that just opened last year.

The "new look" Southland Conference landed two teams in this season's FCS playoffs field. The University of Incarnate Word cardinals earned a #7 national seed and will have a bye in the first week and will host the winner between Furman and Elon in the second round in San Antonio.

The Southeastern Louisiana lions earned the autobid from the Southland Conference and will host the Idaho Vandals in the first round in Hammond America. The winner of that contest will travel to play Samford in the second round.

Good luck to the Cardinals and Lions!

I would imagine SLU will have a leg up and they have a fairly young team this season, and Scelfo just finds a way to win the close ones.
It will be interesting to see who those four teams hire and who they will lose to the portal and who they will recruit.

All bets are off with the transfer portal, both coming and going, but the guys we should get back who were lost in fall camp or in the first three games due to injury will make us a lot better. Specifically, both starting tackles and two projected starting defensive ends, and a host of others. Everybody has injuries but this year has been particularly brutal for the Lions.

The Lions did not corner the market on injuries )or players who were dismissed) this season.

Goff and crew has to do better on those they get from the transfer portal and hang on to some of the young recruits they have already. One positive is that McNeese went from being one of the most penalized team year after year, to a team with one of the fewest penalties per game in the FCS. That bodes well for the future for the Cowboys.

Three of the four SLC schools who needed new head football coaches have done so: Houston Christian, Lamar, and Texas A&M Commerce. HCU and Lamar look to have done a good job in bringing in a winner. TAMUC may have done so also, but their hire has definitely raised some eyebrows. I suppose UIW will wait to announce a hire after their playoff run ends. ? McNeese's Goff, who will be going into his second year with the Cowboys in the upcoming season will have SLC coaching superiority over four SLC coaches, all the SLC coaches across the river in Texas.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe off-season, and hope to see some of you posting updates on your teams here. Spring practice is not that far away and another signing period is also on the horizon. Four new head coaches, all in the Texas half of the conference, should bring new excitement to the SLC.

UIW still has a long way to go in terms of facility upgrades, fan support, etc. We've definitely made significant progress in the last 2 seasons with our on-field successes and have done more in the FCS playoffs since becoming eligible in 2017 than most schools have done in their entire 80-90 year histories. They're hoping to break ground in March on the fieldhouse expansion that'll more than double the size of the original structure, so I'd say that UIW probably has the most potential to become the preeminent private FCS football school, but we're definitely not there yet. My vote off the top of my head would probably be for Villanova or Richmond right now.

Furman is the other one. Richmond & Villanova won their Championships in their only appearance in the Championship Game. Furman has been in the Championship game 3x…being nosed out of having 3 Championships on final seconds TD pass by the incomparable Tracy Ham and having to play the Finals with the Paladins’ Walter Payton Award Winner, RB Louis Ivory, playing on 1 leg. Those games were lost by a total of 9 points.

Having BUKU problems trying to post /edit

Anyway supposed to see a nice chart of Playoff annual Appearances by Team - Furman has the 4th most in FCS (19), then Villanova, then Richmond

Also discussed attendance - Furman avg’d 30% more

The real post is much better written - guess this will have to suffice.

FUBeAR your info is right on point for Furman @ 19 1AA/FCS Playoff Appearances but where did the "followed next by Villanova and then Richmond" come from? They are #3 and #4 among current CAA Teams. Delaware has 18 appearances, New Hampshire 17, while Nova has 14 and Richmond 12.

I don't care whether a football team is from a public or private school or whether the private school is Catholic, Christian, Mormon or purely secular.

And the word private doesn't appear anywhere in the post I was commenting on.

If I’m not mistaken, Delaware is a public school that is operated privately. Not sure how that works exactly but that’s what I’ve been told in the past.

LK2,

Does the name Kym Wimberly WR from Slidell, Louisiana ring any bells?

Well … if U of D is not a public school, FUBeAR thinks the taxpayers of Delaware would like their $125,167,500 back.

UD is public. They just claim some sort of legal technicality about being “privately governed” via some 100 year old language in their Charter which keeps them from having to fully disclose their financials or respond to FOIA requests. Very Delawarean of them.

FUBeAR lived in DE for 6 years. It is great for a small town.

And the word private doesn't appear anywhere in the post I was commenting on.Hence the hashtag referencing “context” - the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed - the statement was referring to private schools only as was being discussed & established in prior posts - the context.

The sometimes malfunctioning Quote function (as it did in this post) & FUBeAR not being able to edit any posts sure does make following context challenging though. That is true.

Whether or not you care about whether a school is public or private or about its religious affiliation is beside the point in this context as that is/was a central element of the discussion you entered.

Yes, remember him well. He’s from Slidell but went to Holy Cross HS in New Orleans. Solid player in high school, played for a couple of buddies of mine who coached him. We recruited him though not sure we offered. But he’s solid.

Thanks LK2, Wimberly is now a Bluehen, grad student transfer from Harvard

I watched Hudl HS tape and was very impressed and thinking this kid probably drew attention from SEC schools and I did see SLA offered him... 3 star with 20 offers listed

based on HS video and I was surprised too see he didn’t play his first 2 years at Harvard, very solid his last 2 years so maybe an injury... that’s just guesswork on my part

anyway I’m excited to have some Louisiana talent at Delaware

Congratulations to both UIW #3 and Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) AKA ULHA #12 for their Top 15 rankings in the final AGS polls.
Hopefully they will both have more of a challenge from other SLC teams this coming season.

For those of you who don't vote in the AGS poll, consider doing so this fall.

Yes. It takes up some time in your life, but I enjoy it because if forces me to watch more games (thank you ESPN+) and learn more about different conferences and teams.

After seasons during Covid where some SLC teams did not participate fully and seasons where teams faced SLC opponents twice in one season and on to last season where each team skipped playing one SLC opponent, this coming 2023 season is back to "normal" with all 8 teams playing one another one time during the regular conference season.

Four teams, all the Texas members, will go into 2023 with new head coaches.

For the last few months, the coaching staffs of all the schools have been traveling miles and miles to seek out their future players. Now the signing dates have passed, and all the teams are looking ahead to this fall.

No doubt, everybody crushes it every year!

We joke about it, but in theory, if one believe players are continuing to evolve and are more advanced now than 10/20/30 years ago, there should be a ring of truth to it — or you should at least come away with the feeling you're upgrading. Maybe not each class gets progressively better than the previous year but if you look at classes as 4-5 year blocks, they should be improving over time. Coaching/administration changes and events such as hurricanes/pandemics, etc., can have an impact, but the natural progression should be gradual improvement over long periods. But it doesn't matter how good or bad you recruit compared to yourself, it's how you compare to others over the same period. It all comes down to the impact players and the glue guys. If you have them, and have good coaching, you're going to win. If you don't, it gets ugly.

All that said, I get a kick out of the schools that go down the 247 or Rivals list and recruit the leftover three stars. Makes for a good headline splash on signing day but there's usually a reason why kids get a good star rating yet end up where they do. There are exceptions, but it's usually not good.

My main man Zem does not post much anymore on his blog for personal reasons, but he always said it takes 3 or 4 years to truly know what kind of class it was. Sadly, due to so many circumstances, McNeese had only a handful of seniors who had been here all four years and graduated.

He also said, and Sam Houston bore this out, one or two players can make a difference. Sam Houston would have that one great linebacker, that one exceptional wide receiver, and that quarterback who kept on keeping on and refused to lose even when he was being beaten to a pulp. It only takes a few "special" players.

When Goff took over in December 2021, he faced a very depleted roster. You cannot blame any of those players who left when there had been coaching changes galore, two hurricanes, a winter storm, etc.
Goff and staff had to hurriedly go to the transfer portal and get whoever they could get. Still, in the spring of 2022, the numbers were just not there as there were only a little over 50 players still around. He said at spring practice, they had to take breaks after every so many plays but because of lack of depth. After spring ball, they hurriedly grabbed more players from the transfer portal to add numbers.

Well, it was a disaster. Just as you pointed out. He and his staff found out why some (too many) were in the transfer portal to begin with. Y'all all read about those who were arrested and dismissed from the team. Some decided they didn't want to go to class. Some were just not quite what they had been advertised to be. The 2022 season was played with a lack of numbers and lack of depth, and still most of the games the Cowboys lost after Montana State and Rice were respectable. Most of the games were lost in the 4th quarter when the Cowboys ran out of gas. Toward the end of the season, some of the players really had break out games, and I did question why the coaches had not played them more or sooner. But overall this staff did wonders.

Now, for 2023, the Cowboys needed experience and depth, but this time the staff had time to study and review film, to make sure they were getting student athletes with good character and who really wanted to be at McNeese. They stole one from SLU (sorry, not sorry), and a 3-star who had committed to the University of Houston decommitted and signed with McNeese. McNeese will go into spring ball with close to 90 players learning the system and having more time in the weight room. Unbelievably, this will truly be only McNeese's second spring ball since Covid and due to the hurricanes.

There is no guarantee that any we signed will be good or a bust at this time, but the staff got who they wanted. Quarterbacks, wide receivers, and secondary were high on the list and they got some with experience and some highly touted freshmen. Cowboy fans are very excited with this class, especially with some tall and speedy wide receivers and promising quarterbacks, and I think this staff will do a good job.

However, the schedule was released today, and the front part of the season is filled with away games, all games are against Division I opponents including one in the Swamp, and then the competitive SLC. The Cowboys may be much better this year, but the record may not reflect it.

I don't know if "steal" is the right word, but he did commit to SLU originally and then opened his recruiting back up. I know Edna Karr is good because they have eliminated my high school from the playoffs on more than one occasion, them and Warren Easton.

I am just bored since our men's basketball team is at the bottom of the SLC standings, and I am very anxious to see the progress under second-year Goff with FCS numbers. I think Lamar, HCU, and UIW made good hires. Maybe Commerce did, too, but many of us are scratching our heads about not retaining Bailiff and then a surprise hiring in Dolezel. Should be an exciting SLC season!

That's normal for Lamar, not for McNeese and praying it's only temporary. McNeese starts with Tarleton at home and then has three straight games on the row, including a visit to the Swamp. That's not a good way to start a season when you still have a team with 1/2 of it new players still learning a system. After the 3 road trips, it's a home date to start conference with a Nicholls teams that has had the Cowboys number for the last few years. A tough way to begin the season.

The "University" of Karr is loaded every year and would have won their umpteenth state title in a row had their QB and RB (Jackson) not gotten hurt. We got three from there this year: Running back, Deantre "The Jet" Jackson, and both offensive tackles, Brandon Spincer and Corin Boudreaux (PWO). Jackson and Spincer were both First Team 5A All-State. Jackson runs a verified 10.55 100 meters and runs legs on Karr's state champion 400 and 800 relay teams. He had a ridiculous senior year, despite injuries, rushing for 1045 yards on just 85 carries--over 12 yards per carry. Spincer had a lot of FBS interest but his dad played for Frank Scelfo at Tulane and there's a strong bond there. If we didn't have everybody back on the OL, he could probably contribute as a true freshman. Boudreaux is a steal as a walk-on. Really good player, just undersized at 6-1, 285.

I love our class. Most are from within 1-2 hours drive of Hammond, all are qualified, high academic achievers, have good character, and I think we found several impact guys at multiple positions. Time will tell of course.

I think Goff and staff also got good character players with good academic records. The really good thing about all of the transfers is they all have two or three years of eligibility and have experience. No one and dones.

UIW, with its respectable showing in the Fargo Dome, and your Lions should have raised the reputation of the SLC. With the MVFC and Big Sky gobbling up so many spots, it may be tough for the SLC to get three any time soon, but McNeese would sure like to be one of the three when/if it happens. We need some impressive out of conference wins and need the schools with newly hired coaches to become more competitive.

It can easily happen again. Beef up non-conference FCS schedules and win games and we’ll be back to three, possibly four teams in no time. We have a new Athletics Building/Athletic Training center coming online by 2025 and Nicholls is building an indoor practice facility so we’re both doing our part to enhance facilities. As McNeese gets back to normal, new head coaches at several schools, and Lamar begins to invest more and make better decisions, the league should show improvement moving forward.

Kickoff for the 2023 season will soon be upon us!
Here is a link to information on becoming a weekly poll caster/voter in the AGS poll, one of the most accurate year in and year out.
PLEASE consider voting in the poll this season. There is a discussion page with advice and information and other voters are quite helpful.
July 26, 2023 is when the preseason poll will open and it will close a few days after that.

The SLC needs more representation.

Southland Conference announces 2023 football conference schedule12/14/2022 11:00:00 AM
FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference has announced the conference football schedule for the 2023 season.

“With our membership stabilized after last summer’s realignment and our postseason success, Southland football is in an exceptionally strong position,” SLC Commissioner Chris Grant said. “The battle for the title in 2022 came down to the final game, and we’re fired up for the 2023 season to be just as exciting with a true round-robin schedule.”

The Southland’s eight football-playing institutions will all play a single round-robin schedule against the other seven teams, marking the first time since 2013 the league will feature this playing format.

“Southland football fans are the most passionate in FCS, and I heard their disappointment loud and clear when some of our rivalry games were not able to be played in 2022. We’re glad those games are back on the schedule and everyone will get a chance to enjoy the entire Southland experience,” Grant added.

Four weekends will exclusively feature conference games, including the final three weeks of the season. The matchup of 2022’s co-SLC champions takes place on October 7, when UIW hosts Southeastern.

Full schedules including non-conference teams will be released by each of the eight schools upon their completion.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced the television selections for the first four weeks of the 2023 football season, in addition to games streamed on digital platforms.

The Gators will open the season on Aug. 31 when they travel to Salt Lake City to face Utah. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. It will be the Gators' first trip to Utah and it will mark the second game of a home-and-home series between the two teams for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The Gators downed Utah 29-26 last year in Gainesville. Florida and Utah's only previous meeting came in 1977 when the Gators claimed a 38-29 victory in Gainesville. UF leads the all-time series 2-0.

The Gators will then host McNeese on Sept. 9 for this year's home opener in the Swamp. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The matchup will mark the first meeting between the Gators and the Cowboys.

The Southland athletic directors will be meeting this month. Discussions will include basketball scheduling, possibility of going to a Saturday-Monday conference slate for the men with men/women doubleheaders on Saturday. It has been thrown out there in hopes of more national coverage on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU -- and better officiating!
In football, the conference is still hoping to add two more members, preferably Division I members.

McNeese: $1.1 MILLION FOOTBALL LOCKER ROOM UNDER CONSTRUCTION
LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Football is in the process of constructing a new state-of-the-art, $1.1 million locker room that will be completed in early July in the Jack Doland Fieldhouse.

The locker room will include 116 custom hybrid lockers, similar to what is housed in the Los Angeles Rams' locker room. The lockers are made from a gray nano technology laminate which is self-healing and scratch resistant on the sides, doors and footlocker face with upper and lower compartments.

"I am very excited about our new locker room," said second-year head coach Gary Goff. "The new state-of-the-art lockers will not only provide our team with a facility to be extremely proud of, but will also assist in our recruiting efforts. Every student-athlete wants a nice locker room and this will be one of the best!"

Each locker will include stainless steel pull-out, tilt-down should pad and knee brace gear rack and tray with a fan drying system integrated to circulate air in pad compartment, forcing the air into the pads. The lockers will also include a helmet fan drying system, electrical outlets with two USB charging ports, LED lights, lift-up head rest with fold down back rest system, footlocker box with digi lock capabilities.

"I'm beyond excited about our new football locker room," said McNeese Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer.https://mcneesesports.com/images/2023/6/6/IMG_0570.jpg
"I have to thank our administration, (McNeese President) Dr. (Daryl) Burckel and (McNeese Executive Vice President) Dr. (Wade) Rousse for their support on this project. I also think this is a great time to acknowledge the importance and growth of the McNeese Athletic Foundation (MAF). Without the MAF team and organization, this project would never have gotten off the ground.

"This project will be first class in every way. We took no short-cuts. This will help us recruit the student-athletes we need to get back to where we all expect to be in football – nationally relevant and regionally dominant, period! The truth is, our football program was neglected and under funded for about a decade. The day this administration team got in place, we started reversing that trend and getting the program back on track. We have accomplished a lot as a department the last few years and every sport is important to this department. However, make no mistake, our two revenue generating sports – football and men's basketball – need to win! When they win, every sport will reap the benefits. This new locker room will help move our football program forward thus move our department forward."

In addition to the new lockers, the locker room received a new paint job and installation of a new sport traffic carpet. Also, the bathroom and shower area will receive a new overlay epoxy floor and ceiling repairs and paint.

From what I am hearing this is only the beginning. The renderings for the new pressbox construction should be released soon. Also, I hear rumors about pressbox and stadium naming rights. This present administration is light years ahead of any administration we had in the past in fund raising.

MCNEESE BREAKS GROUND ON STATE-OF-THE-ART FOOTBALL PRESS BOX

LAKE CHARLES - McNeese State University broke ground on a new press box for Cowboy Stadium on Thursday. In 2020, Hurricanes Laura and Delta devastated Southwest Louisiana including the Cowboy Stadium press box.

"Having the press box groundbreaking is a positive message to the Southwest Louisiana and McNeese communities that recovery from Hurricane Laura, while taking longer than expected, is continuing," said Dr. Daryl Burckel, president of McNeese.

The new facility boasts 25 suites, a 1,700-square-foot sky club and an open patio-type area. The top two levels extend goal line to goal line. Football operations, media, radio and television will be on the second level (former film deck).

"Today is a monumental day for Southwest Louisiana! This new press box is simply a game changer. The number of premium suites, the amenities and the functionality of this press box will be second to none," exclaimed Heath Schroyer, director of athletics at McNeese. "There has been a great deal of work done by several people behind the scenes to make this day a reality."

Visitors to McNeese for sporting and other events added approximately $4.3 million to the economy of Southwest Louisiana in 2021. Suites in the new press box will provide McNeese football fans with a premium venue for watching games with friends, family and business associates, drawing more visitors to the region. Sales for the suites will bring in millions of dollars for McNeese.

"The press box signifies the commitment to not only our football program but also to McNeese athletics! It will usher our athletics department into the future and help us reach our aggressive goals," Schroyer said.

McNeese is the proud home to 14 NCAA Division 1 athletic teams. Last year, total attendance at McNeese ticketed sporting events was 132,225, of which 44,790 were for football as the Cowboys led the Southland Conference in attendance.

"This is a state-of-the-art facility allowing McNeese football to compete at any level. This is just the first of many projects that will transform the McNeese campus for years to come," Burckel said.

McNeese has 60 new players. The only thing not new is our coaching staff which is still young and in its second year, but they are still having meet and greets and have the new players wearing nametags. Still, the Cowboys should be able to handle a bunch of birds. It might get gruesome for the Card fans watching the slaughter on that big new screen. New turf? Does that mean you finally have the SLC logo on it, the conference you have abandoned how many times now? Y'all just need to be happy that McNeese needed someone they could beat and was close by to let y'all back in.
