Worst Uniforms in the History of the FCS

There have been some ugly uniforms over the years in college football, especially at the FBS level. Sam Houston's 2012 uniforms have to be on the list for the worst FCS uniforms ever because of the look of the orange pants. Whoever designed those pants should have been fired immediately. It looks like the players were wearing fanny packs, or as someone on Katfans called them "diaper pants". I'll post a link to a few pictures. The first one is the Southeastern Louisiana game, which I was at and left at halftime due to an incoming thunderstorm (I was a student at Sam at the time). What would have been worse would have been if there had been white pants with orange in the groin area. What are some of the ugliest uniforms you've seen at the FCS level? I believe Sam Houston switched to Under Armour for the 2013 season, and the ugly pants were gone.

The all black with the halloween orange numerals for the Griz in the 2010 Griz/Cat Brawl. The only thing kinda cool about that whole getup was the big black bear paw on the back of the silver helmets.

The absolute worst were the all black unis we wore twice in 2013. The first time we wore them (vs UIW), the numbers were peeling off during the first half -- we changed into green jerseys at halftime and wore green jerseys/black pants in 2nd half. We had numbers permanently sewed on and wore them again vs Nicholls when we clinched our 1st SLC title. The old guard/blue blood alumni were pissed because the team pic of our first team pic with the SLC championship is in crappy black unis instead of traditional colors.

Southern and Grambling wore uniforms during the Bayou Classic one year that had Jaguar spots and Tiger stripes inside the numbers. They were both gawd awful.

I was at both games. As stated before, I was at the Southeastern Louisiana game and left at halftime due to an incoming thunderstorm which delayed the start of the second half by about an hour and a half, and I think the entire second half was played in a driving rainstorm.

I remember playing you guys one year and you had two totally different yellows and materials for pants and jerseys. Looked weird. The tops looked like cheap old school loose fitting jerseys but the pants looked normal and modern.

The SLC felt like a small po dunk high school district at times.

We did have two tones of gold, but the jerseys were extremely tight fitting, not loose. You probably remember the baggy undershirts our players warmed up in, and wore under the jerseys. But yes, the uni game in the Southland was horrendous in those days.

When did blue make its way into the uniform color scheme? It became a school color out of nowhere.
I’m not sure exactly but when Sam went to the old athletic logo blue became more incorporated over the years it seems. The 2004 team that went to the semis had simple blue outlines on their numbers and names, but blue was fazed out when those uniforms I was referring to were introduce. Black was the piping color and outlined the numbers. Then as Whitten was dumped and the program turned around they added blue again (first reappeared on said “diaper pants” uniforms when they were unveiled in 2012). Even had blue pants iirc for 3 or 4 years. KC maybe have a soft spot for the color?

Sounds like a lot of confusion. If you pay attention to basketball and baseball, they use black as an accent color, or straight orange and white. Football was the only one to use blue. I think that’s a big reason they overhauled the logo. Every sport is on the same page now, thankfully.

I certainly prefer our current look. Orange and white, like it should be. And they looked great on National TV, I’m sure.

That isn't as bad without the helmets. I just don't like the solid black pants. Why add black to a perfectly good uniform color? This is an even worse example below, of bringing black into a decent Green and White. Black socks are for old men and Bermuda shorts.

They were basically pajamas supposed to be honoring veterans for homecoming in 2017. I'm not sure anybody was honored that day.

Our baseball team wears black jerseys for no good reason with black hats. My current Sam Houston hat is black, but I want an orange one. Our school colors are orange and white, not orange, black, and white. Our baseball team wears black jerseys for no good reason with black hats. My current Sam Houston hat is black, but I want an orange one. Our school colors are orange and white, not orange, black, and white. I tend to agree with the sentiment that you should stick to school colors, which would mean orange and white, but I like our baseball teams jerseys and hats. Orange and white is a bit more difficult to pull off in baseball. Think about how many orange/white caps you see in baseball.

Otherwise, I agree. Teams should stick to school colors. I’m glad our football team does after years of black and blue. Having a black alternate is popular right now with college players and fans. I get it, black looks cool. But having an entire black set when your school colors don’t include it makes things feel off. It can be pulled off sometimes, other times not so much.

SFA has worn those black uniforms against us for years now and it always makes for a **** looking BOTPW. Wish they’d wear their purple vs our orange or white. Even went to those JACKS helmets last year.

There was a fad a few years back with camo jerseys and honoring our veterans. Fine cause, but the camo jerseys almost never looked good. Here was SDSU’s horrendous attempt at it:

I think our attempt at that actually worked out pretty well. Then again, we weren't trying to "camo" our purple or anything. We went with fairly standard purple for most of it, but used the USMC's MARPAT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARPAT) (Desert version) camouflage pattern down the sides and as accents around the collar, sleeves, and as a border around the numbers. Then again, if there's a team that's going to do camo well, you'd hope it'd be the one named after a branch of the military. These photos are from 2014 and 2015 respectively.

There have been some ugly uniforms over the years in college football, especially at the FBS level. Sam Houston's 2012 uniforms have to be on the list for the worst FCS uniforms ever because of the look of the orange pants. Whoever designed those pants should have been fired immediately. It looks like the players were wearing fanny packs, or as someone on Katfans called them "diaper pants". I'll post a link to a few pictures. The first one is the Southeastern Louisiana game, which I was at and left at halftime due to an incoming thunderstorm (I was a student at Sam at the time). What would have been worse would have been if there had been white pants with orange in the groin area. What are some of the ugliest uniforms you've seen at the FCS level? I believe Sam Houston switched to Under Armour for the 2013 season, and the ugly pants were gone.

I hear ya. Jax st was red and white forever. If there was ever a “third” color, it was gray. (The band always had some gray because they are called “The Marching Southerners.”) Then someone decided that we should be “like Mike” sometime in the ‘80s or 90’s and voila! We looked like the Chicago Bulls. I was told it was to create a better contrast for TV and marketing purposes. Hated it then, but it’s kind of grown on me now.
