UNI's Sanders removed from spotlight
CEDAR FALLS -- Eric Sanders is keeping a low profile these days.
The University of Northern Iowa's senior quarterback, generally regarded as one of the best players at his position in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision, isn't splashed across the cover of the Panthers' 2007 media guide. Nor did the senior from Oelwein, a rare four-year starter for UNI, represent his team at the Gateway Conference's annual kickoff luncheon in St. Louis in July.
Johnny Gray, a junior wide receiver, graces the cover of the media guide. Safety Chris Parsons, center Eric Hoffman and guard Barrett Anderson join head coach Mark Farley on the back cover. Inside, it's Araf Evans, Jordan Lacy, Darian Williams, Brannon Carter, Brandon Keith and Chad Rinehart. Lacy and Rinehart made the trip to St. Louis for the Gateway festivities.
That's no mistake, said Farley, who is beginning his seventh season as UNI's head coach. Panther football isn't about any one player -- not even a former walk-on who has become a 67-percent career passer for 6,170 yards and 53 touchdowns with a 23-8 record as the starter.
"He is the face of UNI football," Farley said Friday when he introduced his team to the media. "He'll get those things (recognition), but without that support cast that's on those cover pages, we wouldn't be talking about Eric Sanders.
"That support cast needs to be recognized. You all will find Eric Sanders." ...
