Where's the QB transfer from Northern Ill? ...or did I just miss him?
Never mind, I found him... I was wondering about his size but 6'3 214 is pretty good if he can move too.

No kidding! Mike Hamilton, who transferred from Oklahoma State and was the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the year is now with us! The only reason he transferred was because OSU recruited a major Blue Chip RB and he wasn't going to see playing time.
Then we have Florida State transfer Lamar Lewis who proved himself to be amazing last year.
We have Zeke Rozier who is a beast just out of high school. He had full ride offers from a few ACC and SEC schools but wanted to win championships for sure. (his words too)
Then we have a few other guys. We are so stacked at RB, we moved our stud RB from last year over to DB to be a rover.
We are also stacked at QB, DL, and DB. Once they get clicking, our defensive backfield will be on the same level as many I-A's.

Calm down. I think you're over-estimating some guys. I could argue with almost every one of your comments, but the line about Rozier is particularly exaggerated.

Not exaggerating about the secondary. I think it will be the best FBS. Loaded back there. QB and linebacker our are only weaknesses going into the season. Billy Lowe is going to be very good.

Fine, if you don't believe me, see for yourself:
Mike Hamilton (3 star recruit):
http://oklahomastate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?sport=1&pr_key=18601
As a Freshman at Oklahoma State, Hamilton saw 193 carries for 961 yards averaging 5 yards a carry. He also have 20 receptions for 161 yards averaging 8.1 yards per catch. After his freshman season, Hamilton was named the "Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year" by the Big 12 Conference coaches.
As a Sophomore at Oklahoma State, Hamilton saw 97 carries for 546 yards and 4 touchdowns. He averaged 5.6 yards a carry. He had 7 receptions for 48 yards averaging 6.9 yards per catch. After OSU recruited two highly ranked Blue Chip tailbacks, Hamilton decided to transfer to GSU.
Lamar Lewis (another 3 star RB):
http://floridastate.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=36469#bio
Last year for GSU Lewis had 149 rushing attempts for 782 yards (5.2 ypc avg) and 7 touchdowns. 18 receptions for 136 yards (7.6 avg per catch).
Zeke Rozier (wait... ANOTHER 3 star RB!!):
BTW, I definately did not exaggerate Zeke in particular as I hung out with him nearly every day over the summer. One of my roommates is on the team and he was over all the time. I know about Zeke very well. I also watched him play in the Georgia state high school playoffs and know that he is for real. Get your facts straight, I know mine are.
http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=60095&Sport=1
Had offers from Michigan, Ohio State, South Carolina, Oregon State, Miss. St., MTSU, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Auburn, and GT.
And yes, our other RB from last year who was #1 on the depth chart the majority of the time is now a DB:
28 Chris Covington DB 5-11 190 Jr Lawrenceville Brookwood
Now as for our Defensive Line, we have seniors T.J. Watkins and Joey Tuttle and juniors Jerry Barker and Damon Suggs who have done very well for us so far and to add to that we have a few other guys on the roster AND the addition of 4 transfers to help us out there too:
Bradonlee Williams – DL – 6-4 240 – Jr – College of San Francisco
Kerry Bonds – DE – 6-2 212 – So – South Carolina
Charwell Brown – DL – 6-0 220 – So – Coffeeville Junior College
Jerome Pelham – DL – 6-3 245 – So – Nassau Community College
And then there is our Defensive Backfield. Perhaps the most stacked area of our team. Let's see... we have
- Henry Chubb from Troy
- Brandon Jackson who is a Preseason All American pick
- Carson Hill
- Chris Covington
- Brandon Echols
- JT Nash
We also potentially have another guy coming in from Univ. of South Carolina to play DB for us.
And that is leaving out the others, combining to form one of the fastest, hardest hitting secondaries anyone on our schedule will face.
Now, as far as QB's go we have Travis Clark, Billy Lowe, Kyle Collins, and Jayson Foster (who is still taking snaps at QB and wearing the red jersey in fall camp). From talking with my roommate who plays WR, Clark and Collins seem to be the front runners. He has great things to say about them. He said Lowe needs some coaching on throwing but can read and scramble very well. We are probably going to use Foster like Arkansas uses McFadden. We might even have our own version of the "Wildcat Formation" with Foster at the helm. If all that fails (it won't) we have the other two new guys as well as Chris Rogers if we had to. From what I'm hearing, we will be doing very well with Clark and Collins battling it out.

Add Dakota Walker to our roster too, he just transferred in from USC today.
At 6-4 237 pounds and running a 4.5 40, the 3 star LB/DE from Univ. of South Carolina Dakato Walker was named to the SEC All Freshman list as a freshman for the Gamecocks. He is a junior and will now play for Georgia Southern.
http://southcarolina.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=52975#bio
He will play along 4 star recruit Quentin Taylor (#18 best OLB in the nation-transfer from Ole Miss) and 3 star recruit Kerry Bonds (#45 DE in the nation/also plays OLB-South Carolina).

With the huge turnover in players, along with a new coach, almost anything is possible from GSU this year. They could be a playoff team or face another losing season, way too early to tell.

That's exactly right. Individual players do not make up a team. We'll have to see but I do believe Hatcher is a great coach and I'm happy to have him at GSU.

Ain't that the truth?!?!?xlolx
IMO, and I'd like to think I'm as objective a "homer" as can be, the fate of GSU will come down to the quarterback play. If one of these guys can step up and play at an all-conference level then GSU has the talent in other areas to be very very good. If not then they will be mediocre at best.
Fortunately Hatcher and Gillespie are reknown for coaching up QB's so that gives me optimism, but you never know...

Coach Hatcher checked out his story and he checked out fine. I thought the same thing too when I googled his name but apparently everything was handled and turned out fine.
Hatcher used a lot of transfers at Valdosta State that were "questionable". He didn't cut them an ounce of slack and if they so much as sneezed wrong, they were kicked off the team. Hatcher is a firm believer in "Do Right", he may be giving someone a 2nd chance after a questionable incident but they will be on a very short leash with no room to screw up.

Yeah, I'm guardedly optimistic, too. But to come on this board fresh off of a 3-8 season and brag about having the best team in FCS because of a bunch of transfers sounds like another Socon team I can think of. One that's got ONE winning season in my memory.
This team may have some talented players, but I believe I'll wait until some of these guys contribute before I brag about them on an FCS messageboard.

We are not the best team in the FCS, App. St. is hands down. In a year or two we could very well be on their level, but we have a long way to go before we hit that mark.
What I was alluding to is that GSU should win more than most people think. For once, I am equally excited about our defense as I am our offense. That is because it is going to be a fast, agressive blitzing defense and we should have the players to do that very well. We also have the coaches to go along with it, and the overall team morale is outstanding. I talked to my roommate last night and he said everyone was pumped about the season. I talked to another friend of mine on the team last week and he said he believes we are going to win just because everyone is happy and wants to work hard for the coaches and the team. Bear Bryant once said attitude might just be 90% of an athletes makeup and we have that 90% in our favor right now. Last year we didn't and we came very close to winning games, but didn't have the attitude (or coaching) needed to win.
We have a lot of talent returning, we have a lot of new talent that just came in, and the coaches are great.
I don't believe it is too much to say that we have the potential to finish 2nd in the SoCon. Although more realistically, I think we will finish 3rd behind Appy and Furman. But I really doubt we will be 5th like a lot of people are thinking we will be. I also think there is the potential to go to the playoffs this year, we have the talent to do it. We had the talent to do it in 2005 and last year.
My point is, we are back. We are Georgia Southern and we can't be kept down for more than a minute.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina reserve defensive end Kerry Bonds has been kicked off the team after he was arrested for assault.
Coach Steve Spurrier announced Tuesday Bonds is no longer on the team for violating team rules.
Bonds was arrested on a felony assault charge Saturday. Police say he attacked a female student at a dorm a day earlier.
An arrest warrant says Bonds held the woman by her arms, pinned her against a wall, then forced her into a chair and tried to choke her.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound freshman from Florida saw limited playing time in two games this season.
He is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison.

There is some history to all this:
In the early nineties, like the early 2000's, our teams didn't reach their potential.
In '95, as in '05, a heavily-criticized Head Coach was fired.
In '96, like '06, the coach was there one year, the difference being the coach was an "interim" coach in '96.
We went 4-7 in '96 and 3-8 in '06.
In '97 we got offensive genius Paul Johnson. In '07 we get offensive genius Chris Hatcher.
In '97 we went 9-2 and won the SoCon losing in the second round of the playoffs to Delaware.
This year... who knows?

Winning our first national championship was a STRETCH. But we did it just one more time until we had a flag, rings, and a nice trophy.
Taking Florida State to the middle of the 4th quarter was a STRETCH. But who was leading at the beginning of the 4th quarter to a very good FSU team?
And who scored the most on UGA in 2004 out of anyone they played? Georgia Southern. If you would have said that before the season, you would have been trucked away to the looney bin.
What SoCon team took the National Champs to double overtime in their worst year ever? Oh yea, that was GSU too.
15-0 in 1989? Did that.
6 National Championships in less than 25 years? Did that.
Now, obviously none of those things (other than how we played App. last year) will really have much of an effect on how we do this year. But the point is, we are Georgia Southern and the only thing stopping us from achieving greatness is Georgia Southern. I believe it was either Bobby Lamb or Cobb that said so himself.
I know this. The players that I have talked to sure believe they are championship material. So do the coaches. And when you have that sort of talent, agressive, heads-up style of play and coaching combined with that attitude, anything is possible. Anything.
But if we are talking probability, 3rd in the SoCon is most likely.

Well put. The only missing ingredient this year seems so be an obvious shortage of Augusta area kids. In fact, I only see one Glenn Hills, one Hepzibah, and one Westside kid on the entire roster. Am I missing any? (Columbia County doesn't count).

I think you all need to be patient with your new coach. If he runs the table, then fine. If he stumbles this year, cut him some slack. I am just guessing, but I bet things could be described as "chaotic" down there the day he arrived. I have not heard about his assistant coaches, but did he bring them with him from Valdosta State or were they still there from BVG or are they new too? My point is that he just assumed control over a large organization. It is unfair to assume he will plug right in immediately. Not to mention the fact that no one is quite sure what offensive or defensive scheme he will run. If it is anything too new, I bet the players are having a tough time too.
In addition to ASU & Furman, this year should be a strong one for Wofford and The Citadel. I would not be surprised if both dogs beat the Eagles this year. Again, no smack intended, just trying to be real.
For my part, I hope GaSo exceeds all expectations this year. But whatever happens, you all need to hang on to your coach. He sounds like a keeper.
And, FWIW, Coach Moore said that this year's ASU team was even faster than last years'. Now, THAT is a surprising statement.

Hatcher brought a couple from his staff at Valdosta St, one of them being his defensive coordinator. Several were highschool coaches. One of them, Rance Gillespie, ran a powerhouse program at Peach County. This is actually a good coaching staff. Only one of BVG's coaches was retained but he left shortly after Hatcher arrived.
Don't worry, we are going to be patient. We know BVG turned everything upside down and it may take time to correct. Notice, I said "may" and not "will." The players are really excited for the season to start. From the reports I have read, they are making progress and the excitement level is high, unlike last year. I fully expect to not just have a winning season but make the playoffs.
We won't know for sure until a few games into the season if we will truly be good, but I have a good feeling about it.

Thanks for the info. It's great to be optimistic about your program. I still remember all of the "Wait 'till next year" t-shirts I saw in the '04 season in Boone. Sarcasm like that never helps.
If you look at ASU's home schedule in '07, the best game in Kidd Brewer Stadium will be ASU v. GSU.
How long till the season starts?

Well put. The only missing ingredient this year seems so be an obvious shortage of Augusta area kids. In fact, I only see one Glenn Hills, one Hepzibah, and one Westside kid on the entire roster. Am I missing any? (Columbia County doesn't count).
Having lived in Augusta all my life (Lakeside alum) and keeping up with high school football over the past several years, I can say we haven't really missed out on that much talent. Augusta produces amazing soccer, golf, and baseball players. Especially Columbia County. Richmond County has some decent football and basketball players. When we see something worth picking up, we usually do but we don't seem to make the CSRA a priority.
I'd rather keep recruiting north Florida, south Georgia, Macon, Valdosta, and Atlanta hard. The athletes coming from those areas are just nuts.
It'd also be nice if we could land some local guys from Statesboro High. They have the #1 prospect in the nation right now. A 5 star defensive end named DeAngelo Tyson who recieved the highest rating on rivals and scout.com. He already committed to that evil, arrogant, severely overrated school up north of us along with 3 of his teammates....

I'm pretty partial to Richmond County; spent the majority of my educational career there. We actually have a Macon kid in Bozeman this year and of course Sgt. Adams son came to Bozeman from Columbus via Oregon State a few years ago. In fact, we've even got a Toliver albeit via South Central L.A. Now if we can get some of Tomberlin's or Campbell's kids who like to rodeo, hunt and fishxnodx

I am very optimistic about this season. There hasn't been this much excitement around here in many years.
