Speed in the wide receiving corps was on display Saturday morning as McNeese State's Cowboys went through their second workout of August camp.

"It looked like Quinten Lawrence and Richard Conner had a lot of catches," said Cowboy head coach Matt Viator.

And, when the receivers caught the ball, there were away in a gallop.

The Cowboys have 10 receivers in camp, three of them - Lawrence, Steven Whitehead and Carlese Franklin - returning all-conference honorees. Lawrence was honored in 2005 and Whitehead and Franklin a year ago.

Besides Conner, other wide receivers on the team are Immanuel Friddle, Chad Davis, Ramon Smothers, John LeDay, Chris Royal and Bernardo Henry.

Seven of the 10 are returning letter winners and six of those seven have caught at least three passes in their collegiate careers.

Cowboy wide receiver coach Broderick Fobbs, now in his first season with the Cowboys, sees a lot of talent and speed in his receivers.

"I can already see that they do the little things necessary as receivers," he said. "They are not only about catching the football."

McNeese will put on the shoulder pads Sunday morning for the first time, but won't be in full pads until Tuesday.
