This season will be the 42nd and final season for Mike Krzyzewski. 12 Final Fours, 5 NCAA titles, and 3 Olympic gold medals highlight his legendary career. Rivals Duke and North Carolina both transitioning from icons within a year of each other.
Looks like Jon Scheyer will be announced as the coach-in-waiting.

Alright UCA has been in the mens basketball dumpster for TOO MANY DANG YEARS.
We lost several players to the portal...but that's ok. I mean we won 5 games last year.
It was time to start over.
Our signing class:
Vincent Reeves, 6'5" 200lbs. Freshman. Averaged 25 pts, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists per game in Alabama high school.
Dreyshaun Doyne 6'8" 200lbs, Freshman. Averaged 14 pts, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots as a senior.
Darious Hall 6'7" 205lbs, Junior or Senior (depending) Depaul and Arkansas, Averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds per game.
Elias Cato 6'8" 200 lbs, Freshman, Queensland Australia, Averaged 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists per game. Shot 52% from field, 42% from three.
Ibbe Klintman 6'8" 200 lbs, Freshman, Malmo Sweden (brother Bobi offered by Kansas)
Hopefully coach Anthony Boone can get this program BACK to where it was in the early 90s...winning a TON of games!
Because I've never seen it in such bad shape.....EVER.

EKU and Jax St moving to the ASUN along with the conference moving to East/West divisions will be interesting to see it affects the standings because, right now, this arrangement leaves the conference extremely weighted toward the West.
Lipscomb, a consistent conference contender, is already in the West division as is longtime D2 power Bellarmine who just recently arrived to D1 along with North Alabama who advanced to the conference tournament title game last year. Add to that Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State who would easily have been the #2 and #3 teams respectively in the conference by NET ranking.
In the East, North Florida is inconsistent year-to-year and Florida Gulf Coast seems to be on a downward trajectory, meaning that Liberty may have that side of the table all to itself.
It would not surprise me to see the West teams beat each other up in conference play, finally crowning a divisional winner whose record on paper will be less impressive than the team that it represents.

Also St. Thomas MN opened up its inaugural D1 season with a 77-72 loss at perennial WAC cellar dweller Chicago State. I hate to say it but it’s looking to be a rough transition year for the Tommies. They may have been one of the top D3 programs but they aren’t at the D1 level yet.

The Socon went 8-1 on their first day of the 2021-2022 season. Granted, 4 teams played sub-D1 opponents, but Mercer put up a good fight against ranked Arkansas, The Citadel beat P5 Pitt, and Chattanooga went on the road and beat a good Loyola Marymount in California.
Wofford plays Clemson Friday night. IMO they should be favored.

Temple opened up the season with a rather uninspiring 72-49 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. It was a 1 point margin at half before the Owls pulled away the final 10 minutes of the game. A 23 point win is usually something to smile about but given the first half struggles and the fact UMES was picked last in the MEAC (think about that) causes some concern....

I attended my first game of the season on Thursday night (11/11); in a rare, local game I attended that did NOT involve one of the teams I root for, host Maryland was able to use good play for much of the second half and hold off a late George Washington rally to beat the Colonials 71-64 in a battle of two DC area teams. The Terrapins did NOT look like a team that should be ranked for much of the game, especially in the first half and coming down the stretch when GW cut a 12 point deficit with 5 1/2 minutes remaining down to 2 points with about 2 minutes left.

On Friday 11/12 and Saturday 11/13, I attended a total of four games. Here's a brief roundup for each game:
*On Friday night, Penn was outclassed at George Mason, losing 87-66. The Quakers never led, fell behind by double digits early, and never seriously challenged to make a game of it at any point in the second half. Penn's defense was particularly bad, much like it was in their season opening loss to Florida State. Based on the performance I have to wonder if Steve Donahue can do the job of returning the Penn basketball program to its expected level of glory.
*In an early Saturday afternoon game, St. Joe's cruised by Mount St. Mary's 80-60, the Mountaineers' second straight blowout road loss to a Philadelphia Big Five team. (They lost by 40 points in their season opener against Villanova.) Much like their fellow A-10 team GMU the night before, St. Joe's jumped out to a double digit lead early and never trailed, generally leading by 20+ points for much of the second half. It was an encouraging performance by the Hawks after a shaky 2 point win over a likely weak MEAC team (MD-Eastern Shore) in their season opener.
*In a late Saturday afternoon game, La Salle held off a late Albany rally and edged the visiting Great Danes 67-64. The host Explorers never trailed after the opening minutes of the game but played sloppy down the stretch and allowed Albany to make things interesting. The story of the game was turnovers; the teams combined for 49 turnovers, 23 of them by La Salle, and it seemed like 2/3 to 3/4 of the Explorers' turnovers occurred in the second half, with many of them in the last few minutes of the game. La Salle nonetheless bounced back from their season-opening loss to Sacred Heart.
*In a Saturday evening game, Temple charged back from a 23 point early 2nd half deficit against visiting Southern California to pull within 3 points on multiple occasions but could not complete the comeback as the Trojans prevailed 76-71. After a close opening 10 minutes, USC went on a 13-0 run and built a 19 point halftime lead as the Owls kept on giving the Trojans easy looks while they struggled with their own shots. Temple regrouped and went on a 22-3 run in the middle stages of the 2nd half to get back in it. However, USC made some key shots down the stretch and the Owls' poor free throw shooting (15-28) thwarted the hosts' effort to start 2-0.

Is the A-10 that much better than the MVC?? I always thought of those two as peer conferences. I guess now that I think about it St. Louis and Dayton are that A-10. So, they are a bit in the Midwest foot print. Still makes me wonder what is going on in the MVC. They have lost Creighton, Wichita St. and now Loyola. Those are tough schools to replace. And you only have 4 private (non-football) schools left in the conference: Drake, Valpo, Bradley, and Evansville. Is MVC falling apart because of football?

I'm probably biased, but I think the Atlantic 10 is historically at least a half-step up, maybe a full step up, from the Missouri Valley. Except for that one year back in the 2000s when the MVC got 4 NCAA bids, that conference in its recent period heyday (i.e. the time when Creighton and Wichita State were still in the conference) was generally either a 1 or 2 bid league. By contrast, the A-10 almost never has been a 1 bid league, and it earns at least 3 bids relatively often. That was true even when the conference had fewer teams in it.

Don't really care about Maryland/Big Ten basketball, and University of Virginia is almost 2 1/2 hours from where I live*. I attended the GW/MD game last week primarily because 1) I'd only been there once (and that being about 10 years ago) and besides Howard, I've been to games at the other four DC metro area schools (Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, American) plus Navy a lot more often and 2) I like when teams in the same metro area play one another. I do think the Xfinity Center is too big for a college basketball venue, or more accurately the upper level seats are too far away horizontally (rather than vertically) from the floor.
*Most people who don't live in the DC area don't realize this, but if you live on the Maryland side of DC, even inside the Beltway (as I do), Philadelphia is basically just as close as places like Richmond and Charlottesville are, especially when you account for the traffic on I-95 between DC and Fredericksburg (for Richmond) and to a lesser degree I-66 (for Charlottesville and for that matter Harrisonburg). That's a big part of the reason why I rarely go to sports events in Richmond, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and other places similar distances or further to the south or west of DC; they can be a pain in the butt to get to, and I have the opportunity to see multiple teams of interest to me if I just go to Philadelphia. Amtrak is also a much more viable option between DC and Philadelphia than it is for DC/Richmond or DC/Charlottesville because of much greater frequencies (though I drove to Philadelphia last Saturday because Amtrak has cut back on the late Saturday night Northeast Corridor frequencies during the pandemic).

1/8 Villanova at DePaul
2/5 Tulsa at Temple
2/19 DePaul at Seton Hall??
2/26 Duke at Syracuse

Well, even though we lost, we did set a record against Duke for most 3 pointers ever scored in their house with 18. Out of 34 attempts. I am not a basketball fan, and I don't understand the fouls at all, but it looked like the ACC refs were seriously cooking the game when comparing actions. Even the announcers questioned a couple blatantly bad calls.

Yesterday (Tuesday 11/23) I did probably my most unusual day-night doubleheader ever, attending the Penn/Towson game in suburban Baltimore in the afternoon and then driving about 140 miles to the northeast to attend Columbia/Lehigh just south of Bethlehem in the evening. Here's a brief summary of the two games:
*On Tuesday afternoon, Towson broke open a close game midway through the first half and cruised to a 76-61 win over visiting Penn that was not as close as the final score. After trailing 15-14, the Tigers went on a 20-8 run to end the first half and led 34-23 at halftime. They then outscored Penn 15-2 in the first four minutes of the second half to turn the game into a runaway; Towson led by as many as 32 points before calling off the dogs. The Quakers were plagued by turnovers (17, most of them in the first 30 minutes) and poor defense (Towson shot 51.7% from the field), and it seemed like the Tigers got most of the contested rebounds and loose balls. It was another discouraging performance by Penn, similar to their bad loss at George Mason 1 1/2 weeks earlier.
*On Tuesday evening, Lehigh overcame a mid-second half surge by visiting Columbia and pulled away late to beat the Lions 79-72. After a close few opening minutes, the Mountain Hawks went on a 14-2 run midway through the first half to take a 13 point lead (27-14); they still led 41-31 at halftime. It felt like LU would keep the visitors at bay and win the game solidly and easily. But Columbia didn't back down, and early in the second half they quickly cut the margin to 5 points. The Lions kept the deficit in the 5 to 7 point range before surging in the middle of the half with a 13-5 run to take the first (and ultimately only) lead of the game, 59-58, with 7 1/2 minutes remaining. But Lehigh responded, scoring ten straight points after the game was tied at 61 to reclaim control of the game; Columbia never got within 6 points in the last 2 1/2 minutes. It was the Mountain Hawks' first win of the season after an 0-4 start.

DePaul takes care of a solid Northern Kentucky team 77-68! The Blue Demons are now 5-0 on the season without Leitao as head coach. I'd love to take a little overnight road trip (home or away) to catch a game before the Christmas If can find some time and decent weather in a couple of weeks. Freeman-Liberty is the legit difference make DePaul has been lacking for what seems like ever. Not saying this a tournament team but if they can scrape together a .500 Big East record they might be in the discussion.
Temple hosts what could be a pretty good Delaware team tomorrow. This is a must win for the Owls if they want to show some signs of turning the corner. The Owls do not want to enter back-2-back Big 5 games (Penn and La Salle) with a 2-4 record.....

Temple is a shell of their former selves. I don't see McKie getting us to the point of being nationally relevant any time soon. I'm not sure he's capable getting us back to "Dunphy's Level" let alone where Chaney had the Owls.

Lehigh's bball team is giving the football team a run for trophy of inept starts to a season. Currently 1-7, the Mountain Hawks showed some life on the road last night in New Haven, losing to a decent Yale team, 82-72; but, it seems we're now focused on "moral victories". We were down 33-18 at half and it looked like another embarrassing loss. But something happened at half. We outscored them 56-36 in the second half for a miraculous comeback win. We shot 63% FG and 53% 3Pt in the second half.

Here I am again talking about a sport I don't really like, but this was insane.
My Bulldogs did it again. Half time against WCU down 33-18. Really? We suck in the first half.
3:12 to go in game down 64-51.
Some how we went on a 17-2 run and won 68-66. Including 6 points in the last 21 sec.
Unbelievable. But a great effort.

Jacksonville State lost in the A-Sun semifinals but they can still get the autobid to the NCAA tournament? Bellarmine beat them in the semis, and are playing the Jacksonville Dolphins in the title game tonight. But as Bellarmine is still in the transition phase in their move to D1 they are not eligible for the big dance. If Bellarmine wins tonight the Gamecocks, and not the Dolphins, advance to the NCAA tournament.
Edit: Jacksonville State didn't lose to Bellarmine in the semis, they lost to Jacksonville in the semis. But if Jacksonville loses in the title game, the team they beat in the conference tournament gets the autobid to the big dance. xcrazyx

I believe the logic comes down to the following scenario:
Say JSU gets beat in round one by Kennesaw.
Kennesaw gets beat by Jacksonville in the semis.
Jacksonville gets beat by Bellarmine.
If the criteria for the seed was just "beating JSU" then you'd be sending Kennesaw to the dance.
You could make the rules that it goes to the tournament runner up. But currently it defaults to the Regular season champ when the tournament champ is ineligible.
So technically we could have gotten beat by 40 in the first round and still gotten the AQ.

I had said maybe I could see JSU still getting the bid while thinking about them losing to Bellarmine specifically in the semis, but now with this scenario you laid out I have gone from "can maybe see it" to not seeing it at all.
I would much rather the rule says that the auto bid goes to the tournament runner up, as they are the last team remaining that is eligible for the big dance.

There is a small chance that the Jackrabbits (#27 last week) could be ranked in the AP top 25 poll going into the NCAA tournament. It's feasible they could jump over the following teams from last weeks poll.
#22 Texas - lost in the Big 12 quarterfinals to unranked (but tournament-bound) TCU.
#23 Colorado State - squeaked by an 18-15 Utah State team in the MWC quarterfinals before losing to #29 San Diego State in the semis
#25 North Carolina - blew out Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals before getting blown out by eventual tournament champion Virginia Tech.
Right behind SDSU were #28 Memphis (who lost by 18 to #18 Houston in the AAC championship game) and #29 San Diego State (who beat #23 CSU & lost to #26 Boise State in the MWC tournament). Neither, either, or both of those teams could possibly jump ahead of the Jackrabbits.
I would think Virginia Tech jumps into the top 25 after winning the ACC tournament, drubbing #7 Duke in the process. Also likely to get some votes this week is Texas A&M after making a run to the SEC championship game, beating two top 15 teams along the way.

Why even allow an ineligible team to participate.
When Wofford joined the SoCon, we had only been D-I for 2 years and the transition at that time was 5 years, so we weren't allowed in the tournament (not that we could have beaten anybody - our basketball transition was much harder than football).

That would be the easiest solution.
I really don’t care much either way, but my thought is if they get to compete in conference and all games against them count in conference standings then let them play the tournament. It just should’ve been the last standing eligible team gets the bid.

Ever notice during the conference playoffs when announcers say that "no one wants to play team X in the NCAAs" They never say "everyone should want to play team Y in the NCAAs because they are on the downside".

It was a 3 point game with a minute to go but okay.
I wasn't too confident in the Jacks once seemingly everyone jumped on their bandwagon. The popular upset picks almost never pull the upset.

They didn’t get stomped. That was a one possession game with less than a minute left. The margin of victory was free throws at the end

seems like that sort of goes along with the general guideline that announcers shouldn't say "yes, this team/player is really bad at playing this sport". It's just rude.

On National Peakcock Day the St. Peter's Peacocks beat Purdue 67-64 to become the first 15-seed to reach the Elite 8! There was nothing flukey about the win either, they went toe to toe with Purdue and out-executed them down the stretch to pull out the victory. They'll face one of college basketball's blue bloods as they'll play the winner of UCLA-North Carolina on Sunday.

That Duke-North Carolina game not only lived up to the hype but it surpassed it! Excellent playmaking from both teams but the Tar Heels pulled it out down the stretch, bringing the curtain down on Mike Krzy......... Coach K's legendary career.
