You can catch David Ball a couple times in the Bears highlight video from Wednesday. (http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/index.asp?mm_file_id=890&play_clip=Y) He makes a great catch at about the 1:42 mark. He is #19.xbowx xbowx xbowx

My boss is at the Bears training camp today and he called to let me know that Ball made a very nice catch right when practice started, but then dropped 2 in a row on short slant routes that hit him inbetween the numbers.

The Bears are going to keep 5 WR's and I don't see Ball being one of them.

Yeah, we do. Rex can hit defenders between the numbers all day long.
I love the Bears but am not a fan of Rex.

Make no mistake about it, David Ball is an NFL caliber player, regardless what the stopwatch showed last March!

But breaking onto the 53 man roster will not be easy. It looks like the Bears really like '06 practice squad WR Mike Hass and, if he makes it, that could squeeze a Ball a bit. But I have to believe David will be, at least, on some teams' practice squad this season.

Catching the ball is the least of worries when talking about David Ball. He's made a living catching the ball for his whole athletic career. Biggest concern is not just his speed, but being able to get separation from NFL DB's. From sound of things and watching the video, he appears to be accomplishing just that -- at least in practices.

Don't forget he played hurt his entire Senior year at UNH (at about 75% full ability) with bad knee that slowed him down considerably (even at the Combine). Go back and watch his JR films and you'll see him run away from people. If he gets healthy and can approach his younger days in terms of speed, it could be interesting.

Don't ever count him out. Just ask the schools who passed on him out of HS and Prep School and the DB's from Rutgers and Northwestern, .......

I am reading the papers each day and David Ball is never mentioned. My son went to the practice last night and Ball got almost no time. In the Chicago Tribune today they were talking about Mike Haas a receiver from Oregon State and said that "the team is likely to keep six receivers (5 for certain are Berrian, Muhammad, Bradley, Hester, Davis) meaning Hass is in dogfight for the last spot. Brandon Rideau is his main competition."

What do you guys think a better situation for Ball would be, placement on the Bears practiced squad and wait for a injury or getting released and being picked up by a team that thinks they can use him, but if he doesn't work out it could result in him being cut on the final round and then he ends up drifting away for good :(

UNHFan99

There is usually a a day or two after the final cuts for guys to have a chance to sign somewhere before they sign on to the practice squad. So Dave will know his options. That is just my understanding. Im not totally sure of how it works.

I think Haas actually dropped a ball vs the Texans. While we know Ball is not fast, at least he comes off the line hard. Haas looked very slow coming off the line vs Texans. #17 (Solomon) looked good last night (WR & Special Teams), but dropped one catchable ball on a 3rd down play late in the game.

I noticed the same thing after replaying his catches and incompletion a couple of times. He was getting off the line and moving upfield the first five yards quicker than the other recievers on the field at the time.xnodx

Graham had a good game Interception some nice coverage he did get burned on a Colts touchdown. D Ball however just didn't get any chances, one pass was rushed to him because of pressure on the QB and another time he was wide open but the pass went to the back instead. Kind of frustrating at the end of the game with two minutes to go and the Bears just ran out the clock, when every second these guys get in game situations are valuable and should be used to see if anything good can happen. Who knows, those final two minutes could be the last time some of these guys are on a pro field...

I don't think that was Corey's man, the safety came up and took the short route, which probably was supposed to be Corey's and the safety was supposed to play the back of the end zone. This is based on the defense they were playing all night. The safety probably jumped that route because they kept throwing it all night.

I don't think Corey would leave his man like that... but he did play well early, but you could definitely see his fatigue as the game progressed.

It is not looking good for Dave after Hass' performance last night. Hopefully, he will catch on with a team in more desperate need!

Back to David Ball, it's kind of frustrating to watch him slip away. In camp he was making big plays and going toe to toe with Mike Hass, then the first preseason game comes and he has a big catch to help win the game. Then the following week, that's all you hear about, how Ball is the man, then last weeks game Hass has a big game and Ball gets no chances at all,so this week all I've read about is how Mike Hass is a the man for the 6th w.r spot. This brings us to last nights game that I watched on the web in great anticipation to see David Ball at least get a quarter of maybe even a half to show the coaches what he has, especially since Rideau was down with a injury and what happens, Hass plays the entire game and Ball gets zero playing time. Almost as if the staff didn't want anything to make them second guess their predetermined decision. That tells me he's done, I know he will probably do his time on the pratice squad like Hass did last year but it is still frustrating when the kid just doesn't even get a couple of minutes of play time.

slingshot37 says this...

David Ball I'm becoming a fan of. There was one very short pass that wasn't even in his zip code and he was trying to do a somersaulting catch to get to it. Love seeing the effort. Rideau looked very good and I'm interested to see Haas's practice performances translate on the game field. We should be very deep at WR and Rashied Davis may even be challenged to pick up his game by the battle at no. 6.

chibear51 says

I forgot to mention that David Ball and Mike Hass caught everything thrown to them. Ball was especially impressive. I heard Rideau got cut? If I go by the number of reps during scrimmages, I would have to favor Ball as being the 6th receiver. I think he had college STs experience too.

June 5, 2007

Bears sign Arena League receiver Marshall

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Bears on Tuesday signed wide receiver Timon Marshall to a three-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.

Marshall spent the last five seasons in arena football leagues, including the last three in the AFL for the Grand Rapids Rampage, leading the league in 2006 with a team-record 2,374 all-purpose yards.

The Ottawa University (Kansas) alum, became the first player in AFL history to record 1,300 receiving and return yards in the same season after a 2006 campaign in which he caught 102 receptions for 1,324 yards and 19 TDs with 70 kick returns for 1,316 yards and 1 score. The two-way player added 39 tackles with 3 interceptions and 5 pass breakups while also returning 2 missed field goals for 59 yards last season.

UNHFan99
August 29th, 2007, 04:13 PM
NFL contracts are definitelly not guaranteed. They get paid by the game. The only money they definitelly get is the signing bonus. Some people sign longer contracts so that it somehow benefits the salary cap when they recieve a bigger signing bonus.
As soon as a player is cut they stop getting checks. They only get around 800 bucks a week in camp and vets get alittle more. Then they get 16 paychecks for games.

Maybe so, but at least David went out with a bang tonight vs Browns. 5 balls tossed his way, caught 4 for 40 yards-at least a couple for 1st downs on 3rd down passes. The one incomplete was actually a "remarkable" (as quoted from Bears website) one hand catch in the endzone, but he was ultimately ruled out of bounds. Of course, Hass caught the next pass from Leak for 6! His only catch of the night, too....

As regards "remarkable", that is common place for those who have followed the kid through his years at UNH. We'll see what happens. He's sure to catch on somewhere if not with the Bears. xthumbsupx

A few quotes from the Tribune reporter covering the game tonight:

THIRD QUARTER
:) Leak to the left side to David Ball, first down to the 22.

:D Leak goes out to the right flat to Ball, and it looks like a bad decision, but Ball hauls it in and scampers for a first down. Face mask penalty gives the Bears 1st and goal at the 5.

xbowx Leak goes for Ball on a fade to the right side of the end zone and Ball makes a ridiculous one-handed catch, but lands out of bounds. Ball has been a favorite at camp, but there just won't be room for him, I don't think. He may not clear the waived free agent period for the Bears to keep him on their practice squad.

FOURTH QUARTER
xlolx Leak throws short for Ball, who stops short on his defender and makes the catch, runs around his defender and isn't dragged down until the Browns' 36.

xsmiley_wix Pass to Ball right at the sticks and forward progress will give him the first down.

It may not be with da Bears, but the kid can play, ... xthumbsupx

One more comment from the Bears forum regarding tonight's game, then I'm outta here:

"He made a one handed catch tonight that looked exactly like one of those digitally edited Reebok commercials"

OK, one more, this from Browns "Blawg" during game:

"Good lord, what a catch by David Ball in the corner. .... I told you to look out for him, didn't I?"

Maybe the Bears will decide to keep him if they feel he wont clear waivers.... the talk around New England is that they will cut Testerverde and tell him to stay near the phone for the season because they feel Gutierrez wont clear waivers and they have been very impressed with him that they dont want to lose him.

As regards "remarkable", that is common place for those who have followed the kid through his years at UNH. We'll see what happens. He's sure to catch on somewhere if not with the Bears. xthumbsupx

Yes that was the "almost catch".

Even though he was out of bounds, that catch shows Ball's insane body and hand control.

He will make $4,700 a week on the practice squad. That's what Thig is making.

Nice salary.xthumbsupx xwhistlex

That is a great catch. Unreal. The Bears have to find a spot for him or someone else will.

BH someone else will. He will be on the Bears practice squad. Hass has the 6th spot locked up.

I dont think he will be on the Bears practice squad I think someone will give him a shot to play this year if the Bears don't.

Even for a guy who has seen great catches from Ball for 4 years, this is just amazing. Good luck, David!
