I know, they prefer to be called 'Charlotte', but that'd of been confusing...

We'll see what happens, but they want to make a decision by early 2008...

UNCC panel thinks I-A right choice for football

A key question as UNC Charlotte continues to explore starting a football program is: How big-time should the school go?

At a meeting of the school's football feasibility committee Tuesday, it appeared the best spot for the 49ers would be with college football's big boys in NCAA Division I-A.

"With the growth the university is showing and the market we have here in Charlotte, I think the school and city would respond very favorably to I-A," said committee chair Mac Everett. "What this university wants and this marketplace demands is a I-A program."

I say bring them into the FCS and make them battle it out in the Big South.

They probably expect to play NC State and UNC. They'll actually get FIU and FAU.

Their conference history:
Independent (1970-1976)
Sun Belt Conference (1976-1991)
Metro Conference (1991-1995)
Conference USA (1995-2005)
Atlantic 10 Conference (2005-present)
source here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_49ers)

It looks like their I-A chances would have been better if they had stayed in C-USA. Of course they could always go back to the SunBelt.

Unfortunately, I can picture them playing in front of tens of thousands of empty seats in Bank of America Stadium. They would probably be better off playing in FCS against CAA/SoCon schools.

Who was in the Sun Belt in 1976? I'd be shocked if any current members were there.

That is what I said to my wife, a UNCC alum, and she went nuts. Those Charlotte people are out of their mind if they think that they can just jump into the bowl subdivision. They think they are above FCS football. Suckers.

No kidding. If they were even thinking about football, why in the hell would they leave C-USA? xsmhx Stoopid.

If you are startin a program from scratch you have to start in I-AA don't you??? Charlotte doesn't have the support for I-A or the conference affiliation. They won't get it, and they will forget it for a few years unless basketball starts going well again, and then they'll start bitching again

There's a very real chance that the CUSA might split up in the near future. The CUSA schools in the east aren't happy with traveling to Texas and vice versa. If that goes down I think you might see the eastern schools adding the two F_Us and something like UNCC. Also there's chatter picking up in Mass about a move to I-A. I know a few people who swear it's going to happen (not that it means anything). They'll need a home and no the Big East won't be taking them.

Are they big enough to even start at FCS?
D-II would give them a better chance to compete right away.

You can't have your basketball teams and football team in different divisions.

It's been that way since 93 when Dayton, et al. were kicked out of DIII.
