Jim Johnson praised free-agent rookie safety Jeremy Thornburg's performance against Baltimore, telling reporters Thornburg "looked like Tim Hauck out there."
Asked about that, Thornburg said: "Who's Tim Hauck?"
At the University of Montana, where he's now an assistant coach, Hauck probably will hear about this and chuckle. Hauck was a safety, smallish and unexceptionally muscled, like Thornburg. He played for seven teams over the course of 14 seasons. Toward the end, the Eagles used to call on him when they had somebody go down in the secondary, or needed a special-teams jolt.
Hauck played for them the entire 1999 season, when he authored the hit that ended Michael Irvin's career, Oct. 10 at Veterans Stadium. Irvin tried to duck under Hauck and slammed his own neck into the turf, suffering a spinal injury. Hauck then got the call after camp began in 2000, '01 and '02. He wore the No. 45 that Thornburg wears now.
