Haven't heard but if YSU opted out voluntarily it's too bad they couldn't have made the decision earlier so the conference could've possibly gotten UND and Missouri St back on the schedule this week instead.

Haven't heard but if YSU opted out voluntarily it's too bad they couldn't have made the decision earlier so the conference could've possibly gotten UND and Missouri St back on the schedule this week instead.

UND will have gone 5 weeks between their loss to NDSU and the first round of the playoffs.

YSU opted out. Nothing to do with COVID. Just already played seven games and didn't see the value in playing another.


Saturday’s home game against North Dakota has been canceled. A release from the Missouri Valley Football Conference says that YSU determined today they could not play the game on Saturday after playing a league-high seven games.

Do you think this game would have been played if it were not mandated by the MVFC?

I think both teams have a share of the conference title, and only one team may have benefitted (besides getting game experience) from playing it. Given cancellations of games due to non-COVID circumstances, just not sure what the drive to play this game would have been. I'd like to say "competitive drive", but clearly that is waning this spring. And again, only one team had anything tangible to gain from it.

But with as laissez-faire as the MVFC has been about reconfiguring the schedule this spring they probably wouldn't have done anything if YSU had opted out of the UND game by this time last week. NDSU and SDSU had some pretty fortunate timing to get their game rescheduled to this week. Had WIU and USD not been already moved to 4/17 NDSU's game @USD would've been moved to there. Likewise if WIU had pulled the plug a week earlier. It would be NDSU/USD this weekend who knows if USD would've done the same YSU did and left NDSU and SDSU idle as well.

Yes, they would have. Teams had the option to opt-out (see Indiana State), so those that played were not "mandated" to do so. And clearly, over the past month, playing out your schedule has even become optional, so...

I suppose the only difference would have been that teams that decided to not finish their regular schedule also are not (potentially) going to the playoffs. I'm sure if a team was in prime playoff position (and conference co-champs), and playing (specifically, losing) might hurt that position, there would be no reason for them to say, we cannot play due to COVID (and use contact tracing as an excuse even in the face of no positive tests), right? That would definitely not be possible, agreed?

Agree with you on the timing issue. First-come, first-served worked out for NDSU-SDSU and did not work out for MSU-UND. They're still on to play the Dakota Marker, right? ;) All of the above said, I am not sure how a team responds after missing game competition for over a month, against a team that likely did not miss this much consecutive time AND is at least good enough to make the playoffs. I can only see that as working against UND, but we'll see.

YSU opted out from embarrassment . Their RB McLaughlin had a concussion . Starting QB was out. Ditto an OL and a S. Add in a number of injured upperclass backups , both on O and D and they realistically were in for a major butt whipping. With the poor season showing and now injuries , even though they had backups ( as poor as they are ), they threw in the towel.

Its basically been a highly embarassng “season” for the entire MVFC. No one should get out of missing games this Fall.

I can continue it. I had only seen a couple people mention they were interested. I can put it up at some point today. We will give Hen the regular season crown, but keep the tally for the playoffs going as well. Should I keep an ongoing for those that have been doing it all along and a separate tally for just playoff totals?
