View Full Version : AM or FM Radio for your school?

Retro
July 26th, 2007, 06:14 PM
I'm conducting a informal survey here...

Does your school's football games air on FM or AM Radio or both? I only need one answer from each school and don't care about webcast's, etc.. Please try to go by this coming year's contract if known.

Just trying to get a percentage of schools for each frequency.

Lehigh is on two AM radio stations related to the same company, with different settings for whichever end of the Lehigh Valley you are located: either 1320 or 1470 FOX Sports Radio. And the Mountain Hawks have out drawn Penn State on Lehigh Valley radio. PSU games are on 790 AM

Back in the Bob Waters days, we had between 10-15 stations that would carry our games. I miss those days. We've also lost Sylva's WRGC(5 miles up the freaking road!!!) due to their love of Atlanta Braves and NASCAR. Sad.

WMXF 1400 AM in nearby Waynesville was a WCU affiliate for years until Tuscola High's heralded QB Jonathan Crompton committed to Tennessee and they became a Vols affiliate. Crompton's father, I believe, is the station manager and he made that change.xmadx

Georgia Southern distributes their football games on both AM and FM stations across the state. The 2007 affiliates list hasn't been finalized yet, but here's the 2006 affiliate list.

WCFO-AM 1160 - Atlanta
WMLB-AM 1690 - Atlanta
WNRR-AM 1230 - Augusta
WQXZ-FM 98.3 - Cordele/Perry
WQIL-FM 101.3 - Dublin
WVOH-FM 93.5 - Hazlehurst
WIFO-FM 105.5 - Jesup
WLAG-AM 1240 - LaGrange
WLYU-FM 100.9 - Lyons/Vidalia
WSNT-FM 99.9 - Sandersville
WTKS-AM 1290 - Savannah
WPMX-FM 102.9 - Statesboro
WZBX-FM 106.5 - Sylvania
WNNG-AM 1350 - Warner Robins/Macon

The number of affiliates has dropped over the past five years. At one time in the late '80's & early '90's the Georgia Southern Sports Network had 35 radio affiliates for football. The games could be picked up from Jacksonville, FL, all the way to the north Georgia mountains, and from Talladega, AL, to Kiawah Island, SC.

My oh my, how times have changed!

And also a student FM station on WVUD. Although there are two FM stations, IMO the boradcast strength sucks. After you get into PA it's very difficult picking up the signal at all. I can't hear the radio at my house and I'm just an hour and a half away. Strange enough, they moved from an AM station to the current FM station supposedly for signal strength reasons - however, I can easily get the AM station but can't get the FM station - oh well. xsmhx

"UCA games will now be carried on KUCA in Conway, Crain Media stations around the state and on the combination of 103.7 The Buzz and The Point 94.1."

UCA ANNOUNCES NEW RADIO AFFILIATION
ADMINISTRATION • May 10, 2007

CONWAY, Ark _ The new voices of University of Central Arkansas Bears football this fall will be familiar to football fans around the state of Arkansas.

Well-known television sports anchor Steve Sullivan and Little Rock radio talk show host Justin Acri will be in the booth when UCA opens the 2007 football season on Sept. 1 against Louisiana Tech. The games will also be carried live statewide on KABZ 103.7 The Buzz or on its sister station The Point 94.1.

Bill Johnson, long-time voice of the Bears, is now a member of the UCA athletic department's Purple Circle fundraising arm after spending more than 40 years as the football play-by-play man for Bears football. Johnson, a member of the UCA Sports Hall of Fame, began calling UCA football games in 1966.

"With this partnership with The Buzz, we looked to do something that would raise our profile around the state and help our transition to Division I,' said UCA athletic director Dr. Brad Teague. "In going with The Buzz, and a crew of Steve Sullivan, Justin Acri and Monty Rowell, we will certainly enhance our image statewide and move our program forward.'

Johnson, a member of the UCA Sports Hall of Fame and a former UCA Board of Trustees member, broadcast more than 400 UCA football games during his career.

"It's obviously hard to replace someone with 41 years of experience in doing Bears football,' Teague said. "But Bill's continuing involvement in our program, in an enhanced way even, will be invaluable to us.'

UCA games will now be carried on KUCA in Conway, Crain Media stations around the state and on the combination of 103.7 The Buzz and The Point 94.1.

"We are excited to be entering into a partnership with the Buzz,' said UCA President Lu Hardin. "The Buzz is an outstanding sports network, and I look forward to a long partnership. Steve Sullivan and Justin Acri are the consummate professionals. To extend our reach this dramatically is a positive move for UCA Athletics."

Sullivan, a native of Massachusetts, has been at KATV Channel 7 in Little Rock since 1999, and has been a fixture on the air in the Little Rock market since 1985. Acri was a sports anchor and reporter for eight years at KATV and took over as program director at KABZ in September 2006. He has been with The Buzz since June 2003. Acri currently serves as host of the UCA football and men's and women's basketball coaches shows that air on KATV.

Rowell is station manager at KUCA on the UCA campus and has been the voice of UCA Bears basketball for the past two decades. He will continue his sideline, halftime and postgame duties with the new game day crew.

UCA football will also debut a Monday night call-in show airing weekly on The Buzz. The show will feature Acri and UCA head coach Clint Conque from 7 to 8 p.m. each Monday night during the season following Drivetime Sports, live from Mike's Place in downtown Conway.

"Now that we have Crain Media in the network, as well as the Buzz, we will cover the majority of Arkansas in our first full season of Division I and Southland Conference play,' Teague said. "We have a very talented radio crew that I know our Bear fans around the state and on the internet will enjoy listening to.

"And the addition of the Monday night call-in show will only heighten our profile across the state.'

Walhalla is approximately 1 hour south of Cullowhee down NC-SC 107 and how I would LOVE to have them as part of the Catamount Sports Network. 104.5 out of Highlands/Cashiers would be good as well, but the rich folks in those towns are all Florida/FSU/UGA alumni, so it wouldn't matter to them, but their signal goes as far south as Anderson County, SC.

Portland State has only one, 93.1 FM in Portland, still under contract (although I believe this is the last year). Three years ago, we were on an AM station that had a knack to get "covered up" by a Seattle station at night, which is when all PSU home games are played. You considered yourself lucky if you were able to listen to all of the first half. Last year, 93.1 was a new talk station that picked up the Vikings, and because of FM, people were able to listen to the whole game.

No stations outside of Portland that I know of.

Albany is broadcast on WOFX 980 am, but may be switched to WOFX FM 98.3 if there's a conflict with a Mets' game. Student station WCDB-FM has done games in the past, but I couldn't tell if they did any last year; with football on commercial radio, they seemed to be concentrating on volleyball. Both broadcasts are available online.
