I submitted my ballot on Sunday evening so I still included Chattanooga. Obviously I'll be taking them out going forward but had I done that in this weeks poll every below them slides up and I would've added ETSU probably.

Well APSU is only 3-2 this spring with losses to Tennessee Tech and UTM (3-5 overall) so not sure they really deserve to be included in the top 25 right now anyway.

Well no way would I tear it apart, you and I selected the exact same 25 teams, although not in the same order. The most significant difference is in the order of the top 7, although again, I think we have the same 7 teams.

The first comment I'd have is on Weber St. To begin with, their schedule is so mediocre, that I'd put their ceiling at about 4 or 5 - if they win them all. This past Saturday they should have lost to Northern AZ, and they were at home. Northern AZ handed them a long shot to win by virtue of back to back foolish penalties and an intentional kick out of bounds in the last seconds of the game. Weber won on a very well thrown 55 yard "hail Mary" pass to a very good Tight End who made great catch. Other than that, Northern AZ, outplayed them in the 2nd half.

I have Delaware in 3rd and JMU in 4th. Delaware has looked completely solid in all facets of the game going 3-0 against all credible opponents. They have played a stronger schedule than JMU and have simply looked more consistent against better competition. I moved JMU up several spots to 4th after their win vs W&M. For the first time this season JMU looked like the JMU we've seen the better part of the last 4 season - and it was against the best opponent they will play so far in the regular season.

I get the votes for SHSU for #1, they have demolished all the conference teams they've played. I just think that both SDSU and NDSU have played much better competition and and even with one loss, they are still the teams to beat come playoff time.

Thanks for the commentary - All totally fair points - I think a lot of my placement of SHSU, Weber St, Delaware, JMU has to do with where I saw them coming into the season and where I expect them to be come the end of the season.
I found it difficult to drop Weber behind the Valley teams in a week which saw them pick up a win (albeit a close one that they probably should have lost) and the MVFC teams were idle. Their UC-Davis win looks better every week, too.
Delaware has steadily climbed with each win, and if they keep winning in the impressive fashion they have so far, they'll continue to do so. I had them at #25 in the first poll and have been pleasantly surprised by their play in all 3 games.
JMU has looked pretty shaky at times, but found themselves adding to their win column every time. They definitely helped their case this past weekend and the upcoming game against Richmond will tell us a lot about both squads.

The trouble comes down, for me, to the lack of OOC games. Tough to compare the top teams in each conference when there's such limited cross-conference exposure to use as a benchmark.
Maybe the Southland is really strong and Sam Houston is incredible. Maybe the Southland is full of mediocre-at-best teams and Sam Houston is just good, but looking great in comparison.

Great analysis, thanks for posting! I made a whopper of a mistake in my post. JMU beat William and Mary, not Richmond this past weekend.

Y’all are killing me with ranking 3 loss teams. Hell, we’re 2-3, shoulda put us in.

I ranked em pretty high, but I’m having a big problem taking a “Keydet” seriously. That was the name of the girls drum and bugle corp at a local high school.

I feel like your "3 loss" statement is dripping with sarcasm, so let's try the sarcasm this way...

31935

(cue Sesame Street music)
Three of these teams belong together.
Three of these teams are kinda the same.
But one of these teams is doing its own thing.
Now it's time to play our game, it's time to play our game.

Well, which of these teams is doing its own thing?
C'mon now, can you tell me which one?
Can you guess which team is doing its own thing?
Before this song is done.
(end Sesame Street music)

Hey, how'd you do? Did you guess which team is doing their own thing? Well if you guessed the Lamar Cardinals, then you're absolutely right, because they have not beaten (or even been within 21 pt of) anyone within the Top 25, and the others teams with 3 losses have. So that's the right answer.

Sorry, had to do it. ;)

Addendum...Missouri State has three or more losses when you count the fall.

Glad you brought this up.

I haven't been counting any wins or losses that happened in the fall. As far as I'm concerned, that was last season and I'm only considering games that happened from February on. Am I alone here? I'm genuinely curious.

I'm taking them somewhat into account but they hold less weight than the games played this spring. For instance, I think I'm higher on Jacksonville St (still) than most probably because I'm giving them a bump for an FBS win in the fall. I do think that Missouri St would be higher for me than they are (I have them at #14) if not for their 2 UCA losses in the fall.

I'm with you on this. I really don't think it would help too many teams anyway. There were a slew of loses to FBS teams and quite a few FCS mismatches. It's a pain to have to go into the schedules of every potential Top 25 team and determine which Wins and Losses were fall games.

Can you guess which team is doing its own thing?

the only sarcasm is in regards to my Cardinals. And no, not talking bout MoSt.

JSU had a different QB most of those fall games.
