Varvel provides experience to youth-dominated safety position
July 19, 2007
This is the third in an eight-part series previewing the Texas State Bobcats position by position.
SAN MARCOS - With two-year starter Daniel Varvel back at free safety and Michael Rutledge emerging as the future starter at strong safety, there's just one question facing co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Casey Horny ... depth.
Beginning with spring drills, Texas State turned to a pair of red-shirt freshmen who used to roam the secondary together at John Tyler High School.
Kenneth Hampton signed with the Bobcats out of John Tyler. Kerry Maddox originally signed to play at Washington State but joined the Bobcats last fall. This spring, Hampton moved to the free safety position while Maddox transitioned to the strong safety position from cornerback.
"I think if we can go out there with Daniel (Varvel) and Mike (Rutledge), we are going to be pretty good," Horny said. "But you always try to have a contingency plan. Who is next in line? Developing Kenny and Kerry is going to be a big job when August gets here. We also have some talented younger guys who are coming in and have a legitimate shot of cracking the two deep. But heading into the season the big question is certainly developing depth."
