My poll could almost be the key for this poll, I have a big deviation with NDSU and I got JSU quite a bit higher than the AGS poll and VMI should be ahead of Furman, prove me wrong

Based only on what I saw from watching all 5 CAA games last weekend, I think the CAA teams should be ranked in this descending order:
Delaware, Albany, JMU, Villanova, UNH. Of course that could change significantly over the next 2-3 weeks. How to rank them compared to all other FCS teams is guess-work, but here's my Top-25:

1: North Dakota Fighting Hawks

Oh no, I hope I’m not the one who Accidentally voted for Delaware State instead of Delaware....

Preferred Walk-On
March 9th, 2021, 02:24 PM
Quick notes (no lengthy comments today)

- I am one of the Weber State 1st place voters. I just did not think UND's performance over USD warranted a jump. The UC Davis @ Weber State game this upcoming weekend should help sort this out a bit.

- In fact, my top 10 did not change much, as I was not willing to move teams simply because they were IDLE, and I am not sure who jumps over them anyway. This is because none of the top 10 teams in my poll (outside of UNI and UND) played AGS ranked teams, and their ranked opponents were USD and ISUr. It is debatable if those games were really any different than the rest of the IDLE or top 10 teams playing unranked opponents.

- My only real qualms with the current AGS poll is the ranking of SoCon teams. Watched parts of the Furman game and the Chattanooga game, and saw the entire overtime for each. Those are games that could have easily gone the other way, and those teams would be out of the top 25, or dropped significantly (at least by most sane accounts). That said, we're really quibbling about the 3 of the bottom 5 teams and a fourth that is perhaps just a bit too high in my opinion, but who knows?

- CAA appears a bit unclear to this outsider at this point...too bad JMU is playing a double round-robin season with what appear to be middle-at-best CAA teams. Perhaps someone can help me out with this.

Have a great week everybody, and looking forward to everybody's perspective on the poll.

You were not. When I looked at it this morning it was a CAA voter that I looked at and they had The Hens up higher. That is what I thought I saw when looking at it closer this morning anyway. I just went back and wanted to verify the positions and the Blue Hens were on another voters line, not the one I thought.

I'm gonna check on this and see if it was a mistake (very likely) and if so I will amend the 1st post.

Fair question! I think we should expect a lot of movement throughout the Top 25 the next 3 weeks. During this early part of this short season, I'm basing my vote on three major criteria: 1. What a team has accomplished this Spring Season. 2. A teams strength relative to the the rest of their conference. 3. The strength of a conference compared to the rest of FCS football (minus teams who have opted out of Spring play) over the past decade - weighing the most recent years heavier. As I indicated, I watched all of the CAA games this past weekend and in my judgment Delaware had the best performance of the teams that played. (All played except for URI. Towson opted out). I gave JMU zero credit for their 1st 2 wins over Robert Morris and Morehead State. Morehead clearly showed up only for a pay check and Bobby Morris went into the half tied 16-16 with JMU. This past weekend Elon out played JMU in all phases of the game for 3 quarters; and Elon's first two games were dismal and disappointing against the same level of of opponent the Dukes faced in games 1 and 2. Elon barely beat Davidson in game 1, and were blown out in the second half by Gardner-Webb in game 2. (G-W had to go to OT to beat non-scholarship Presbyterian this past Saturday) I've watched all, or the better part of all, of the games I'm referencing here. The question you should be asking of the many of people voting here to justify is: Why do you have JMU ranked #1 or 2.

To answer your second question, yes, without a doubt Delaware dominated the Black Bears. However, while that does say something positive about Delaware, it might say even more about Maine. But most things about Maine are always hard to predict. They may come back and win next Saturday vs Albany, or wait a couple weeks and upset Villanova. The Northern Division of the CAA may contain the best 4-5 teams in the conference this year and don't count anyone out. Anything might happen any weekend this short season.

You may get some criticism by a few in these threads but I respect your work you are putting in to do this. Nicely done.xthumbsupx

Especially since Idaho doesn't move the needle for me after their loss to UC-Davis
Would Illinois State be the next alphabetically below? That could make more sense

I really don't get JMU so high. They've looked awful the last two weeks against subpar competition. #13 in my ballot. Their baseline expectation against this schedule should be to go undefeated. Sadly if they are still so high here, I assume they get a bid on name recognition alone even if they split with Richmond.

I have them 4th in the CAA right now.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way about JMU. I have them #14 in my poll. Wasn't sure if I was a little harsh on them or not. Also, I don't get how some polls have Eastern Washington over UC Davis & Idaho.

As I had the Dukes ranked #1 the week before, I cited their win over the Formerly Fightin’ Former Christians as my Most Significant win - but certainly not for the usual reasons. Slow start against Bobby Morris? OK - long layoff - we can overlook that. Trailing E*Loan 17-3 @ half, 17-6 in the 4th quarter, and winning by a FG. Nah, the Dukes gotta drop. Felt kinda dirty only dropping them to #8.

Because...let’s remember who Elon is now...2 weeks prior, CAA Elon trailed PFL non-schollie Davidson 20-12 @ half & had to score a TD with 32 seconds left to pull out a win. The next week, Elon traveled to BigSouth perennial also-ran Gardner-Webb and got boat-raced 42-20. OK...Gardner-Webb has a new Coach, maybe the Runnin’ Bulldogs are just awesome now. But, let’s see - 1 week after curb-stomping Elon, G-W took on new PFL-member that has been non-schollie since 2017, Presbyterian, and had to go to 2 OT’s to pull out a win.

So...to summarize, it seems that JMU is at about the same level as a middle-of-the-pack PFL or also-ran Big South Team and Elon is just a hair below that. We’ll know more soon, but don’t we have to wonder if the whole CAA has descended to PFL level...”in the midst of a pandemic” (my favorite phrase to qualify almost any statement or rhetorical question)?

Edit - just saw that JMU is, perhaps, pulling a Conklin, and has cancelled/postponed their game with Bill & Mary. Perhaps, they need a week to regroup before facing a 1-0 Richmond Team...in the midst of a pandemic?

It seems to me that the recurring theme this spring is those who watch games of the highly ranked teams have a lot of "they don't look like a top X team to me" comments. I think that's a nationwide phenomenon not just limited to JMU in this highly irregular spring season where most teams are coming off of very long breaks with many teams losing their senior class AND a good chunk of their junior class from the last time they played meaningful football.

Professor, consider watching the Sam Houston Nicholls game this Saturday, you will not be disappointed!

I think I may be underrating Villanova given that I don't want to be a homer (and Albany might actually be better). The defense looked as good as ever, certainly its usual top 10 status. And the offense has even more depth than expected, only the best of the four HB was not back at his usual form just yet. The yardage told more than the score against Stony Brook. I did not expect to look like a top 5ish team but they very nearly are. It's just the same old story of special teams disasters as it has been for a solid decade.

Overall point taken, but I don't think most of my top 10 has looked that bad. NDSU may not be their normal selves but no reason to suspect they don't look like a top 10 team.

Well if Furman was 21st last week and we just won today at ETSU (30th in receiving votes) maybe my Paladins get pushed up the polls a little. Plus we beat Samford who just beat Wofford. I don’t come here pushing my team much - and we could get beat easily by Chatt this week!! But maybe we are too 15/20. I do realize Chatt could kill us. Would be crazy if Chatt AND VMI went undefeated missing only the game where they were to play each other but Chatt had COVID
