I’ll go with ETSU, FU, VMI, and Chatt for now...we’ll see if sobriety changes any of those picks.

Wofford, Furman, VMI, Chatt.

To me, ETSU is a little bit of a wildcard and it wouldn't surprise me if they won.

What's going to be hard about picking the Socon going forward is that, as opposed to a couple years ago where you had 2 flexbone teams, a few spread teams, and a few pro-set teams, you know have 3 spread teams, one flexbone team, and 5 teams that like to play defense, run the ball, and work the pass from the run. And, in my opinion, they're all well coached. So, barring games with lots of turnovers, we're going to see a lot of games where the winner scores less than 30 (like we did yesterday with Chattanooga/Wofford) between Furman, Mercer, Wofford, Chattanooga, and ETSU.

Socon football is once again experiencing a transformation, and it'll be fun to watch.

Why is VMI 2-0 & Chatt. not 1-1???


I imagine it's because the game is technically postponed and not canceled. I heard that the game wouldn't be a forefiet but have no idea if that is true.

Wofford - I think Samford made ETSU look deceptively better than they are.
Furman - Samford's defense is still typical Samford defense. I do now think, however, that the game could be competitive.
VMI - WCU lacks the 2 D's - Defense and Depth.
Chatty - The Mocs look like THE team in the SoCon right now.

So, over the years ETSU has lost enough games, but we haven't lost one this year...yet

ETSU @ Wofford Too much that I am unconvinced about with my Bucs....Sanders as Head Coach, Radar as Offensive Coord and Riddell as QB, although I think he has lots of potential. I am also concerned about no news on Blake who was injured in the Samford game.

You're right - I should have looked more closely. Either what I heard was wrong and VMI got the win and UTC the loss last week, or the rankings are just all screwed up. Personally, I would think to give VMI the forfiet win you would have to officially cancel the game, which to my knowledge hasn't been done. Of course I think it will be as I don't see how it could ever be made up unless it's after April 17th, which could only happen if neither team makes the playoff, and at that point what does it matter.

Furman - 38 - Two high powered offenses battle it out but the best defense wins.

Western Carolina - 14 - VMI Continues to roll and beats a Western team that's struggling on offense.

The Citadel - 17 - The Mocs go on the road and edge the Bellhops.

To be honest VMI, who let's be honest has had a rough stretch for quite some time, beating a top 10 team seems like it deserves double credit! VMI has made HUGE strides the past three seasons. I'm not saying they are going to win the SoCon, but they certainly aren't the doormat they were for years.

Their QB, who played Sat., is their ‘guy.’ He’s tougher than the day is long. If he was under 18, I would have turned Mercer’s D into Child Protective Services. They hit him HARD almost every play & he kept coming back for more.

He’s a very good, surprisingly powerful (given his slight stature) runner. Obviously, his ball handling in the CIT O needs more honing, but he’s not afraid to pitch & pitch late...which will bode well for him & the bellhops in the future. Actually, I sure enjoyed watching him run their O a LOT more than I did watching the Rainey Right / Rainey Left RecBall O they had devolved to running. QB is not yet a Passer and he may never really be one (or he could develop), but he can get the ball close enough to the Retrievers that the D has to respect that they just might pass. And, he extends pass plays with his legs while keeping his eyes up. His TD pass on Sat was 1 of those...broken routes...find the guy & get it to, um, near him. Wasn’t pretty, but it counted for the same 6 points that Tom Brady’s best TD pass has.

Chatt should win big though. Just not enough overall talent in baby blue. A few good ones on O and a few good ones on D...and a good Punter.

Pretty close assessment on the QB. I think our new QB is money though. You do realize he is a recycled DB right? He can put a hit on someone as well as take it.

It was a tale of two games Saturday. You could tell it was game one and game two for the teams. I really, really liked how the Bulldogs came out at half. But the errors, turnovers, poor initial tackling, and general sluggish execution could not be overcome. I should have looked closer at the roster, and announcer pointed it out, but we had only three O starters from the fall started in that game. Yeek. I do like our trajectory though. It will not be a blowout this Saturday. A couple balls bouncing the other way, and we probably wouldn't have lost this past Saturday.

Nah...just Mercer learning how to play with a lead. Not something they have had any experience at doing. They passed that test with a C- (FUBeAR’s usual academic grade).

And...I find it interesting to note that no one has mentioned anywhere that Mercer played with their 2 most dynamic Players (O / ST & D) on the sidelines in street clothes (not Riddle...he’s still in a boot).

Perhaps some linear programming algorithm can move everyone’s games around, particularly VMI & Chatt - since they also have a Make-Up game due & figure it out. I don’t think so, but I got a C- in Linear Programming.

That said - unlike how SoCon hoops was handled, I think the Team causing the issue has to take the L & their fortunate opponent gets the W. If both Teams can’t play, they both get L’s. Keeping your org. healthy & prepared has always been part of the Head Coaches’ jobs. It’s just A WHOLE LOT harder now. You do a better job of that, you win...worse, you lose. #America

I’m sure you’re right about the last part. Don’t have to agree with it, though.

And, I think you are spot on about how the Conf. would try to make up ‘lost’ games. Hopefully, they won’t have the opportunity to. Don’t want to see any Teams miss games. Be funny if Chatt & VMI each finish 7-0 though. Undefeated, but most likely, no Playoffs for 1 of those Teams...knocked out by some arcane tie-breaker rule. On second thought, that would not be funny. It would suck!

Being kinda jerky now - I’m guessing Woffy’s ‘short-handed’ position group is D-Line. Well, they have a bunch of LB’s - 4 of them > 230 lbs - let 1 or 2 of those cats put their hands on the ground and play football. They have a 4-3 / 4-2 package they run and 230 is plenty big to play DE in a 4 man front.

So - if it is D-Line...and they WANTED to play, they could play. Don’t think they want to face ETSU’s running game without all their lead-britches up front.

If I’m wrong, I’m wrong...but that’s where I’ve landed on this.

I have no idea about the Terriers, but I'm sure they are hesitant about playing if they think they might lose. Two losses pretty much does their hopes of a SoCon championship in. I don't think they will, but it would be funny if they put the TO back in like they did last year after the loss to SCSU.

The Wofford QB wasn't your typical Wofford QB at all. He could run, but wasn't great at it,but he could throw the ball decent. They ran very little option stuff against the Mocs.

After a big win to start the season, ETSU will now have 2 weeks off - will that be a good think or a bad thing for the Bucs?

I just think WAY back to 2016 when Mercer played Samford lining up 2 LB’s (CJ Kleckley (2nd Team LB) & Kyle Trammell (Starting LB)) as RB’s because they didn’t have a single healthy RB on the roster. Alex Lakes tried to go with 3 broken ribs, but had to tap out. QB John Russ had 41 carries & Mercer came within a whisker of winning that game on an incomplete pass on 4th & 12 that was just a few inches high. Guess they should have ‘postponed’ the game, so Mercer could have had a winning SoCon record.

I guess Football and kids were just a lot tougher way back then!

You could certainly make the argument that if the Terriers are out of the playoff picture that they would choose to opt out and start preparing for the fall, but that wouldn't be a good look especially since I head they were one of the largest proponents of a spring season from within the SoCon.

Most Wofford fans are primarily upset that the coaching staff let us get into this mess. As for looking for another P5 DC gig, Conchlin is not helping himself not being able to maintain a defense. As far as I know, there is no COVID spreading in the program. The only real COVID relation is that three players "Opted out", and I find that somewhat questionable.

Chattanooga @ The Citadel - if we play like we did in the second half last week, mostly, it will be close. If we play like we did in the first half, it will be a blood bath. I think with the first game jitters and clumsiness out of the way, we will hold our own. We basically have an entirely new O roster, but I like the potential I saw, mostly. All that said, I'm fairly certain it will be a 10-14 point loss for my Bulldogs. Hoping I'm wrong. Chatty by 10

Good game by the Bulldogs. We made a lot of mistakes in the second half but you guys didn't give up. Your offense will look a lot better once those guys get some more reps - they are pretty talented.
