During a radio interview today he confirmed he will be back with the Patriots in 2007. This likely means FA signee from Idaho State will be on the practice squad or that backup Matt Cassel will be traded after training camp, which has been widely specualted.

Pardon me if I'm not impressed, but we can file this under "Never Underestimate the Stupidity of Some People".

What I would give to be Vinny. Never has to get hit. Gets paid lots of money to do very little.

He has probably seen every defensive scheme ever imagined. I think he might be 45 or 46 come October.

I seriously doubt the Patriots are going into the regular season with a FA signee and a frickin geezer as their backup QBs. Somehow I think we'll be seeing Matt Cassel at backup once again this year unless they bring in another veteran QB. That is, one who is closer to his college graduation than AARP eligibility.

Vinny can hold the fort if something was to happen to Brady.

Agreed. The went a similar route with Cassel and Flutie. Cassel may have bee drafted but only took like 3 snaps in his college career (sucks being behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinert huh lol)
If the Patriots can get a mid round pick for Cassel say a 4th or 5th why hold on to him, hes never gonna start for New England, and Belichick loves having lots of draft picks going into the draft to help him move around if he needs to.

Brady has been pretty durable so I don't think you need a great back up behind him. Just someone who can manage a game.

THe Patriots really dont have a history of having prime of his career experienced backup. Brady himself was a late round backup, its the way New England has gone about it for quite some time.

I still disagree. Flutie was a better QB that year, especially in the mobility department, than Terterverde is now. And Cassel coming out of the Southern Cal program playing behind Palmer and Leinert was bringing more to the table than a FA signee.
Cassel has some experience as well as three years (IIRC) working in the Patriot's system. He doesn't cost the Patriots big bucks, seems content in his backup role and won't rock the boat. With all the trades and FA signings, the Patriots reloaded for a Super Bowl run. If I'm Belichek, I don't risk that by unloading Cassel to stockpile one mid-range draft pick.
It just doesn't make sense to me. If the Patriots are that high on Guttierez (SP), they can protect him on the practice squad and let him learn. Very, very few QBs step into the NFL successfully as rookies. Can you imagine if Brady got some minor injury that held him out 2-3 games and the Pats didn't make the playoffs because they didn't win those three games! This Patriot's fan would much prefer to see Cassel at the helm in that situation than Guttierez.

Hey I agree, im just saying history dictates if Cassel has a great camp and they can get a 4th or 5th rounder for him they will trade him.
