Defense Shines In First Major 2005 Scrimmage

August 20, 2005

HUNTSVILLE -- Offsides and procedure penalties marred the offensive production but the presence of three new NCAA Division I-A transfers in the mix helped explain the miscues as Sam Houston State held a 65-play full contact scrimmage Saturday morning at Bowers Stadium.

Offensive linemen John Dirk of Stephenville and Aaron Saunders of San Antonio Jay, both transfers from the University of Missouri, and quarterback Phillip Daugherty of Bridgeport, who arrived Friday as a transfer from Texas Tech, saw their first action in the scimmage.

"The effort was good but we made way too many mistakes offensively with offsides and procedure calls," SHSU Head Coach Todd Whitten said. "Two new faces in the offensive line probably caused a few mistakes but we really need to focus a lot more in that area."
