From Winston Cup...

To Nextel Cup...

To Sprint Cup...

I understand the reasoning for the name change, but this just goes to show you how much corporate America is messing up sports. Just wish we could have one nickname that's strongly associated with it and move on...

NASCAR's top series to be called Sprint Cup in 2008
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

July 7, 2007

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- NASCAR's top series is changing its name for the second time in five years, switching from Nextel Cup to the Sprint Cup starting in 2008.

It's only the third name change in NASCAR's 60 years, but had been expected since Nextel merged with Sprint in August 2005. NASCAR allowed Nextel one name change in the 10-year contract it signed with the telecommunications giant before the 2004 season.

While admitting name changes are not ideal, NASCAR chairman Brian France has maintained its premier series needed to be in line with the Sprint brand since that's what the company is now called.

its is weird that others sports have trophys or championships that have a set name. nascars is named after a sponser. it could be sprint presents the racing cup or whatever.

Well, if Sprint ever falters, you know Budweiser is in the wings.

The Budweiser Cup- I could drink to that.xprost2x

Nascar is pretty much a giant consumerism/advertising festival in which the cars, drivers, and teams seem to play a secondary role. It's a trade show with driving.

Name the cup after a person, like the Lombardi Trophy or the Heisman or the Payton award. If you gotta have sponsors, follow the "Susuki Presents the Heisman Trophy" formula (or however it's put together.)

Well, when you think about it, the "Sprint" Cup makes a lot more sense anyways. :)

Most sports dont have title sponsors.

Most sports are sports.

NASCAR is a family-owned money making machine where the races are manipulated for entertainment value.

(I don't mean that the races have predetermined winners, but that the competition is manipulated to provide close finishes).

From a naming rights point of view, it is always worth more to be the "Sprint Cup" than the "Nascar Cup Presented by Sprint". I guess they are maximizing revenue.

And the Busch Series is going to the Subway Series next year. I'm not kidding.

NASCAR has gone from cigarettes and beer to cell phones and sandwhiches in 5 years.

How 'bout the 'Piston Cup' (ask those with kids if you don't get it)? xlolx Might be some copyright infringement there.
