I taught geography and history and found that if I could include sports into it that the students became more interested. There were a lot of things that I did- one as simple as putting up sports schedules from college teams around the country that I had picked up on my travels around the country. Here is an article about some ways of using that.

I had them do research on college conferences. It was one of the few things that I had them partner up on because I HATE group projects since I wanted an A and the rest of the group screwed off. Anyway- I'll take the Big Ten for an example. They had to find the location, the size, nickname and draw map with the colors of those schools. Most of them said they had fun doing it. The essay question on that chapter was "explain what you did on your project and how the 50 points should be divided. They didn't know that was coming and it was really interesting. The best jobs were pretty much 25/25. Some people said 30-20. One wanted it 25-25 but didn't write down anything that he had done. His partner wrote that he had to do all the work so he should get all of the points. That is what I ended up doing.

I love it!

Best case scenario is where both parties think the OTHER should get a little more credit. Calls for some real self-reflection.

The answers were really interesting. It sure was different than any other essay question that they ever got.
