Dodgers were in the spotlight a lot back in the 70s and it seemed like Sutton was always pitching, Threw a lot of breaking stuff and had a reputation for doctoring up the baseball, I believe it was 1978 when he got busted and tossed out of a game after being caught red handed with a file in his pocket.... This is from a rusty memory

Announcer for TBS for many years

Ran into him at the Caribe Hilton in 2005 as TBS was in Puerto Rico for some Braves games, He was standing at a birdcage gazing at a parrot, I told him ....hey Don...I heard that joke you told last night about all the Burger Kings in Puerto Rico and he laughed but he never took his eyes off that bird

RIP Charley Taylor

One of the most important figures in franchise history, Taylor was named to eight Pro Bowls during his 14-year career. In a season that Deebo Samuel would mimic nearly 60 years later, Taylor won Rookie of the Year honors in 1964 after catching 53 passes for 814 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 755 yards and five touchdowns. Taylor led the NFL in receptions during the 1966 and '67 seasons en route to being named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1960s.

"We are incredibly saddened to hear the news about the passing of the great Charley Taylor," Washington owners Dan and Tanya Snyder said in a statement. "He represented the organization with excellence and class. ... Charley was a great man and will be sorely missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Patricia and the entire Taylor family during this time."

Consistency and durability were two of the things that made Taylor truly unique as a player. Half of his Pro Bowl selections came after Taylor turned 30. At age 31, Taylor received his fifth Pro Bowl nod while helping Washington capture its first NFC title with a 26-3 win over the rival Cowboys. Taylor scored two touchdowns in the win that included a 45-yard reception to start the fourth quarter. He retired as the NFL's all-time leader with 649 receptions while racking up 9,110 yards and 79 touchdowns.

RIP Hall of Famer Darrell Mudra aka Dr Victory

Turned the NDSU program around in the 1960's and also Eastern Illinois and UNI.

His coaching career is legend across the American landscape. Nicknamed "Dr. Victory," Mudra coached for 27 years at eight different universities or professional teams in the capacity of head coach, winning 207 games against 88 losses and four ties.

Mudra went 24-6 in three years at North Dakota State after coaching four seasons at Adams State (1959-62) and before going on to coach the Montreal Alouettes (1966). He returned to the college ranks at Arizona (1967-68), Western Illinois (1969-73), Florida State (1974-75), Eastern Illinois (1978-82) and Northern Iowa (1983-87). He won another national championship with Eastern Illinois in 1978.

Mudra was inducted into the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

I'm not a hockey fanatic, but I knew who he was. Defensemen don't get a lot of publicity.

In 1996, his first year of eligibility, Salming became the first European player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2017, the NHL named Salming one of the 100 Greatest Players in the first century of the league.

In 1968 Denny McLain grooved Mickey Mantle a home run pitch that he knocked over the fence.

Absolutely. Brown was the greatest running back in NFL history. Even Gale Sayers said that. The guy was a tank on jet fuel. I saw him demolish the Eagles at Franklin Field. He truly was going through the line with guys hanging on him. He was as big as some of the defensive linemen back then. Next to Jim Thorpe, was probably the best all-around athlete in our country's history. Was a tremendous lacrosse player..I believe three-time All-American, plus started for the Syracuse basketball team. An amazing athlete.

I asked him how many bases did he steal and Brooks laughed the hardest

As a kid was a big Maryland hoops fan, was beaming about the talent to my father who busted my world when he told me Indiana would whip Maryland because they play defense, until that time I never heard the word but he couldn't of been more right.

Let's be a little more accurate here.

Walter "Sweet D" Davis was a born & bred North Carolina boy (like FUBeAR), who did 1 year of Prep School, AFTER his HS days at South Mecklenburg (Charlotte), in Hockessin, DE.

FUBeAR would guess he needed a bit more polish on the transcript or a few points on a test score to pass muster at UNC and/or with the NCAA. Those things mattered before our current era of Professional College Sports.

Made his main fame as Apollo Creed to Stallone's Rocky Balboa, but he did play a year in the NFL as a linebacker for Oakland and a couple years in Canada before getting into acting. A distinctive presence and resonant voice. Stallone very broken up over his passing. Said he really helped him in creating the iconic "Rocky" figure.

Consider how Mays remembered the catch, to Roger Kahn: "Wertz hits it. A solid sound. I learned a lot from the sound of the ball on the bat. Always did. I could tell from the sound whether to come in or go back. This time I'm going back, a long way back, but there is no doubt in my mind. I am going to catch this ball . . . But that wasn't the problem. The problem was Larry Doby on second base. On a deep fly to center field at the Polo Grounds, a runner could score all the way from second. I've done that myself and more than once. So if I make the catch, which I will, and Larry scores from second, they still get the run that puts them ahead. All the time I'm running back, I'm thinking, 'Willie, you've got to get this ball back into the infield.'"

The good news is that we can be certain Les Nessman will give “Chai Chai Rod-ree-gwez” an appropriate elegy today.

FUBeAR loved Chi Chi. He was great for bringing golf to the ‘regular folks.’

Yes, Chi-Chi was the first golfer that I can recall who brought "pizzazz" to the game. Always with a smile. I smile just thinking of his 'sheafing' of his putter!

Furman Basketball Great Frank Selvy Passes Away
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman All-American Frank Selvy, one of the greatest players in college basketball history, passed away this morning at his home in Simpsonville, S.C., surrounded by his family, which made the announcement. He was 91 years old.

Selvy, a native of Corbin, Ky., and nicknamed "The Corbin Comet," led the NCAA in scoring twice during his storied Paladin career (1952-54) and averaged 41.7 points per game his senior season, which included a NCAA Division I record 100-point performance in a 145-95 win over Newberry on Feb. 13, 1954, at Textile Hall in downtown Greenville.

Joe Schmidt
On September 5, 1970, a wee FUBeAR attended a Detroit Lions vs. Baltimore Colts NFL exhibition game in Carter Stadium in Raleigh, NC. The soon-to-be Super Bowl Champion Colts defeated the Lions that day, but the wee FUBeAR was able to get Lions Head Coach, Joe Schmidt, to autograph the Lions hat that Papa FUBeAR had bought for FUBeAR. FUBeAR wasn’t really a Lions fan, but he did like the blue & silver uniforms & hat. And, FUBeAR had watched and enjoyed the 1968 comedy film, “Paper Lion,” with Alan Alda playing Sportswriter, George Plimpton, who wrote about his common-man-off-the-street experience playing QB for the Lions during the 1967 preseason.

No idea where that hat ended up, but being out on the field and getting the Head Coach of an NFL Team to pay some attention to him is a moment FUBeAR will always remember.

RIP Coach Schmidt. Thanks for the autograph!

Ruined a player's career to win a meaningless exhibition OR just an example of how to always play the game? Pick a side.

The all-star game meant something back then, but having sex with a minor might prevent people from voting for him.

Those All Star games back 50 years ago were good

AL vs NL and they played to win and this was long before all the intra league play. Today I could care a less about that game.

No, it did not. There was no benefit to the winning team. Now, home field advantage in the World Series is determined by the winner of the All-Star Game. Or did they do away with that stupid rule?

Pete Rose was correct: In 1993 Pete Rose (https://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=rosepe01) was asked about interleague play and he replied, "It would take some of the lust off the All-Star Game
