Chicago State has shut down their men’s basketball program for the 2020-21 season due to not having enough players. They only dressed six in their most recent game and only had one coach on the bench. The head coach opted out for the year due to his history of cancer.

The WAC should kick them out. I get this is an unusual situation with COVID. But this is the latest in a long line of issues in the athletic department. They are completely non-competitive in basketball. They went 0-19 in women’s soccer. I get sucking at everything isn’t a reason to kick someone out. But they lack the resources to field decent teams. The university has all sorts of problems and doesn’t need the expense of flying teams to games.

With the WAC gaining more members this is an albatross they don’t need.

Chicago State not playing the games simply removes an almost certain win for each team on the remaining schedule (two if a conference opponent who had a home and home).

I've been following the Chicago State story for a number of years from afar. Given the financial issues related to higher education in Illinois and the history of struggles at Chicago State, reality must be accepted and hard decision(s) made. I fully understand CSU's evolution into a HBCU and it's desire to preserve that history. With that said, I wish there could be an equitable merger with UIC.

A school with a 5 million dollar endowment and a graduation rate somewhere around 20% should NOT be competing in D1 Athletics.

The WAC has nine members so they play a 16 game schedule. It was two certain wins for everyone so it doesn’t upset the balance of power. Unfortunately, it means everyone loses revenue from a home game.

The women (who also suck) will still play. So the league can’t revamp the schedule unless they want the men and women to have different schedules.

Yeah I forgot the key word "NOT" be competing...

The issues at Chicago State have been well documented. The Illinois system of high education has been a train wreck for a number of years. Some would argue it's broken. CSU is basically the poster child for the state's missteps.

Meanwhile, this creates more questions...

Should the Cougars stop competing in athletics for good, like Northeastern Illinois before them?

At least Roosevelt (the city of Chicago's university) is in the NAIA.
