I wrote them off after the sweep in Colorado, and that was before losing 2 of 3 to the lowly Giants, and 2 of 3 to the lowly Orioles, and then the most recent series loss to a decent but not great team. The AL East was lost awhile ago, and the Yanks were already up against it trying to catch either Cleveland or Detroit, depending on who's second in the AL. A resurgent Seattle just muddies the picture further, and that's assuming that Minnesota isn't a factor. The Yanks are done. The curse of Bobby Abreu lives on!

I stand corrected - plus I believe they are in good shape in that game. Regardless, they're just playing out the string now.

The Red Sox started the season 36-15. Since May 30, however, the Sox are 25-25 while the Yankees have gone 33-17 and gained eight games in the standings.
So things are getting interesting in the American League East.

Even if things weren't interesting, they'd still be the only AL teams that ESPN shows. xbangx

The Yankees cannot stay as hot as they are right now...just as Boston could not stay as hot as they were at the begining of the season...
Biggest question is...who is better prepared for the final run to the end?
I'll still maintain it's the Sox, but it will be interesting...
By the way, Griz, if you check both Fox and ESPN for the next couple of weeks, the Yankess and Sox do not appear...Detroit and the Angels do a couple of times...

But I bet if you were to look at the sunday night baseball schedule for the entire season, it would be 90% NL, 5 % Yanks-Sox, 2.5 % all other AL teams and 2.5% inter-league.

I loathe the Yankees. I'm a Braves fan, and we are still reeling from being up 2-0 on them in the '96 series and blowing it. (Mark Wohlers never recovered, got the "yips", and is out of baseball).
That said, if any of you are actuaries, what would the Yankees record have to be beginning tomorrow to win the division assuming the Reds go .500?
Col Hogan
July 27th, 2007, 01:24 PM
To tie with the Red Sox, the Yankess would have to play .622 ball (38 - 23) for their remaining 61 games if the Red Sox play .500 ball for the remainder of the season...
It's doable by the Bombers...I doubt they will, though (Joe, still looking at that Avatar for you...:p )
So their magic number for elimination from the East title is 24!!!

Typo? Looking at your math, isn't the Sox magic number 54, i.e., if the Yanks lose 23 games then Sox will then need to win 31 to clinch?
PS -- 54 seems to prove out because the Yankees are 7 1/2 back and their magic number would be 69 (38 Yankee wins plsu 31 Sox losses gives the Yanks the title). The difference between two team's Magic Number is always two times the games behind).
TheValleyRaider

From MLB.com:
Elimination Number, the combined number of wins (by the first place team) and losses (by the trailing team) that will eliminate the trailing team from winning the division. The Elimination Number for any team is determined by adding their number of losses to the number of wins for the team leading the division, and subtracting that total from 163. The Elimination Number for the second place team is the "Magic Number" for the first place team. "E" indicates that the team has been eliminated from winning the division.
So let's see...Yanks have 47 losses, added to the Sawks 62 wins is 109. Subract 109 from 163 and you get....dramatic pause....54.
Or you could just read the standings themselves which includes the 54 without explanation...xwhistlex
Have a nice day :)

Its also laughable that Boston would only play .500 ball from now til the end with the easy schedule they have... Tampa Bay 15 times over the final 60 games thats 1/4 of their schedule.
Of the final 60 games for Boston32 come against Tampa, Baltimore and Chicago.
This season vs the remaining teams on their schedule Boston is as follows;
Tampa 3-0 (15) Lets assume Boston does a 10-5 split there.
Baltimore 4-1 (13) Lets assume Boston goes 8-5 here.
Chicago 3-1 (4) We'll assume a split 2-2 this series.
New York 7-5 (6) Again we'll split the remaining games, 3-3.
Toronto 7-5 (6) This might be being generous for Toronto but again a 3-3 split for Boston here.
Minnesotta 2-1 (4) I can see Boston taking 3 of 4 but again lets be conservative and say 2-2.
Oakland 2-4 (2) I say Boston splits so heres a 1-1.
Seattle 2-4 (3) Again the series is in Seattle where they recently swept Boston, but we'll say Boston takes 1 this time so 1-2.
Los Angelas 3-0 (7) Lets say LA takes 4 of the 7 so 3-4.
Now these are conservative, Boston likely will do better against Baltimore and TB then I calculated for and the Chicago series may not even be close.
With this Boston would finish 95-67, New York would need to go 41-20 over the final 61 that over .667 to catch Boston if they finish up at a .550 clip.

Boston has taken 6 of their last 9 games since I wrote this post. 2 of 3 againts Tampa, Baltimore and Seattle.
Big series this week as Boston faces the Angels. Winning atleast 2 in anaheim would cement Boston's claim as the best team in baseball.

Yanks are now only 1/2 game out of the Wild Card after Detroit has gone in the tank.
Now, they have to go to Toronto for 3 against a team which they haven't been able to hit well against.
Then, they go to Cleveland where there will probably be 20 runs scored per game.
Next home with Baltimore which has been able to beat the Yanks this year
Fortunately, they get to be home for 4 games against the Tigers that could be bad.
Next to Anaheim for 3 (the only team Joe Torre has a losing record against) then to the D for 4 with the Tigers AGAIN.
Follow all that up with 3 against Boston at home and you get the absolute make or break point in the Yankees season.
YIKES!!! xeekx

In other terms, it's back to real teams for the Yankees, instead of these so-called major league teams they've made this ground up against. I think Boston has played awfully well to stay 7 up with how much the Yankees have been winning.

The Yanks run sure has made things interesting in Seattle, Detroit, Cleveland and Boston, that' is for sure.
What I don't like seeing as a Yankee fan is Giambi coming back. The team has done quite well SINCE he got hurt and Phillips and then Duncan entered the lineup. Those two players have been a big spark for that lineup, along with the resurgence of Cano, Melky and Matsui.

True, Bluehen. In the nest three weeks, they have 17 games against the Indians, Tigers, Angels, and BoSox. These will be the games that really show what this team is made of. Personally, I like their chances.

you are the reason the yanks got thrashed last night. But luckily Cano keeps his hot streak alive!
Also to people who have been addressing the schedule. Cleveland and Detroit are not exactly the "hottest" teams right now. But they do have the talent and ability to make the yanks struggle. Obviously the Red Sox will be a tough series, but the one to keep your eye on is the Angels. They are playing well and could take the yanks down a notch or two. Guess we'll see.
