The last quarter century of University of Dayton football could easily be called "UD's Championship Era." As an NCAA Division III team, the Flyers won two national championships and four regional championships. And since moving to the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship level in 1993, Dayton has won one national title and eight Pioneer Football League championships.

Head Coach Mike Kelly...Is entering his 27th year as a head coach (all at Dayton), and has 235 wins. His 26 seasons as UD’s head coach are the longest tenure in school history (College Football Hall of Famer Harry Baujan coached for 24 years at UD before becoming Director of Athletics, and basketball coach Don Donoher also spent 25 years guiding the Flyers). Kelly’s .815 winning percentage (235-53-1) is the best among active NCAA Division I-AA coaches (min. 25 years head coach).

Wins Heading In...The only active coaches at the Division I level who have more wins than Mike Kelly are 2006 College Football Hall of Famers Bobby Bowden of Florida State (366) and Penn State’s Joe Paterno (363).

Even More Mike ...Mike Kelly is one of just four coaches to reach the 150 win mark by his 16th season. . The other three are College Football Hall of Famers -- Barry Switzer (2001 inductee), Tom Osborne (1998) and Joe Paterno (2006). Harry Baujan lettered four years as an end on the Notre Dame football team. In his first year, 1913, Knute Rockne was captain of the team. In the next three years, Rockne was assistant coach; in all four years, Jesse Harper was the head coach. Baujan made the all-Indiana and all-Western teams. He played for pro teams in Massillon and Cleveland and served in the Army in World War I. He became head coach at the University of Dayton in 1923 and guided the team through 1946, with three years out for World War II. He posted a final record of 124-64-8. It was not his won-lost record alone that boosted Baujan to greatness. It was his successful conduct of the football program, guiding Dayton from a small, independent entry to membership in the Ohio Conference and, later, the Buckeye Conference. He built a new stadium and drummed up the crowds to fill it. He finished his career as director of athletics, and he also served his city as boxing commissioner, baseball commissioner, and playground supervisor. The Knute Rockne Clubs of America named him College Athletic Director of the Year in 1962. He died December 30, 1976.

The Dayton football program has produced 13 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans since the 2000 season. That’s most at any level of college football. Safety Brandon Cramer was named a Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America in 2005 and 2006. In the history of the Academic All-America program, UD has had 44 football Academic All-Americans. Among schools currently playing Division I football, only Nebraska (80) and Notre Dame (45) have had more. UD has had at least one football player named Academic All-American in 14 of the last 15 years. UD had five players named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, the most of any school in the district for the fifth straight year. Twelve Flyers were nominated for Academic All-America in each of the last four years.

When Jon Gruden coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl championship in 2003, he became the second UD grad to coach a Super Bowl winner. Former UD co-captain and 1993 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Chuck Noll won four Super Bowls (IX, X, XII & XIV) as coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Noll started at center and linebacker for the Flyers and graduated from the University in 1953. Gruden played quarterback at Dayton and earned his degree in 1986. UD became only the third school to have two alumni coach Super Bowl winners. The others San Jose State, with grads Bill Walsh (XIV, XIX, XXIII) and Dick Vermeil (XXXIV), and Arkansas with grads Jimmy Johnson (XXVII, XXVIII) and Barry Switzer (XXX). Gruden is the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl, and Noll is the fourth youngest. As a matter of fact, UD has ties to 18 Super Bowl rings. In addition to Noll’s four and Gruden’s one, five former members of Dayton coaching staff own a total of 13 Super Bowl rings between them. They are the late Len Fontes (New York Giants, Super Bowl XXI), Jon’s father Jim Gruden (San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowls XXII & XXIV), John McVay (49ers, XVI, XIX, XXII, & XXIV), Tom Moore (Pittsburgh Steelers, XIII & XIV) and George Perles (Steelers, IX, X, XII & XIV). McVay was the Flyers’ head coach from 1965-72. The other four were assistants.

WELCOME STADIUM

This is the 29th season the University of Dayton football team has called Welcome Stadium home. The "Welcome" is not a greeting, but honors the late Percival Welcome, longtime Director of Athletics for the Dayton Public Schools. Originally built in 1949 by the city of Dayton for high school football games, it is now owned and operated by the Dayton Board of Education, and it also serves as the site for high school games during the regular season and playoffs, and some of the top track and field events in southwest Ohio.

The Sports Illustrated college football issue in 1991 noted that the name Welcome on a stadium does not describe how difficult visiting teams have found it to win against the Flyers, and it still remains true today. The word implies hospitality, but Dayton has been anything but hospitable to its opponents at home. Entering the 2003 season, UD is 166-30-1 (.845) at home.

In 1974, the city of Dayton, the Dayton Board of Education, the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, and the University of Dayton joined together to help recondition the Stadium, including converting the football field to artificial turf. Welcome Stadium currently features an Astroturf playing surface, full-density urethane 400-meter running track with a steeplechase pit, and a FairPlay scoreboard with video reply capability.

The stadium has a seating capacity of 11,000. Also in the stadium are locker facilities, a two-level indoor press box, an outer press box, and concession stands under both sets of grandstands. Welcome Stadium is located next to the University of Dayton Arena just over one mile from UD's campus. Together the two sites make a sports complex that has provided some of the more memorable moments in Dayton's history.

The University of Dayton has two cheerleading squads and one mascot. The Blue squad (co-ed) is composed of seven to ten females and seven to ten males that cheer for football and men's basketball. The Red squad (all-girl) is composed of fifteen to eighteen females and cheers for home football games and women's basketball.

The Pioneer Football League began play in 1993 with Dayton winning the league’s first crown. The league spent its first season in 1993 under the administrative guidance of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, and the office moved to St. Louis in 1994 when current commissioner Patty Viverito was named the PFL commissioner, a leadership position she continues to fill.

In 1996, Dayton finished 11-0 and became one of only 26 undefeated, untied teams to date in the FCS/I-AA era (regular season).

Ironically four teams did it that year and two met in the championship game where Marshall beat Montana. That was the only time the feat had been accomplished.

Dayton is one of the ten largest Catholic schools in the United States and is the largest of the three Marianist universities in the nation. It is also home to one of the largest campus ministry programs in the world. The university was founded in 1850 as a day school and boarding school for boys called St. Mary's School for Boys, later St. Mary's Institute. In 1913, the city of Dayton experienced a massive flood when the Great Miami River overflowed its banks; the university responded by sending faculty, Marianist Brothers, and students out in row-boats to rescue Dayton citizens. Thus in 1920, in order to reflect UD's commitment to its surrounding community, it assumed its current name.

Currently, UD is the largest private institute in OH.

Each December 8 since 1963, ]UD has celebrated "Christmas on Campus." Christmas on Campus (COC) has become one of the nation's largest single-day, on-campus community service events as UD students "adopt" area children, as well as Senior Citizens and treat them to seasonal shows, displays and food. This tradition is such a part of the University experience that many Alumni Chapters across the US have created their own traditions of giving under the title of "Christmas Off Campus." These events range from social gatherings to organized volunteer opportunities within their communities.
