This guy won a DPOY award for the district last year, so obviously he's pretty good. How will this affect any offers he has (or has already signed)?

Some program will probably take a chance on him, then they will have a feel good piece about him, then we may read that he threw his girlfriend- or maybe a nun- out a third story window. Or maybe he will learn from it but either way something needs to be done rather than ignore it.

I was reading comments on this, and just like a few years ago when two players in Texas blindsided a ref, some people are defending this action with "he probably deserved it."It just isn't defensible.

We had a basketball player who cheap shotted an opponent during a playoff game that we lost. It was behind the action and the officials and coaches didn't see it but the fans did. Our coaches group voted to have him miss two baseball games and made him write an apology to the opponent.

Looks like roid rage, he should probably be forced to be tested. Kid should have been kicked off the team or suspended at the very least.

I'm torn about this one.

On one hand, the withdrawal of the team sends a message about the importance of sportsmanship, so I see it as a good thing in that regard.
On the other, the rest of the players on the team are penalized for the action of the "teammate," so I have negative feelings on that side.

No information about whether this game will be declared a forfeit and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo advances or if the next round game will be a walkover for the next team Edinburg was scheduled to play. If it is indeed a walkover situation, there are negative ramifications for the team they advance to face in the next round (playing a team with an extra week of rest).

Charge him with assault if that is what the ref wants done.
I'm all for deliberate acts like this to be subject to criminal penalties.
Some physicality is part of the game, but this is definitely not part of that category and constitutes assault.

NO intentional physicality with an Official in ANY sport is part of the sport.

There is really no difference in this assault & battery than if he had punched out a female sideline reporter, for example.

BTW - I hate ALL Officials, but this ish is WAYYYYY out of line!!!

1. This is the second time he's done something like this.
2. He's been charged with Class A Assault(misdemeanor) and is out on a $10k bond.
3. If not pled down and convicted, he faces up to one year in jail and a $4k fine.

Isn't this "normal" behavior for some groups of kids today?

Do not get what you want or like something that doesn't go your way so act out and violence is OK...? No need to respect authority anymore.

He does not deserve to be allowed to participate in organized athletics for the rest of his life.
