Bad news for those who will line up at Nathan's. Joey Chestnut may or may not have a competitor in what should be a record-chasing 4th of July. If Kobayashi can't compete -- that sucks. If he can, you'd hope he'd be able to compete at full strength. Perhaps there are some pre-eating contest mind games...?

Hot dog-eating champ may miss July 4 contest

NEW YORK — It's like Tiger Woods tearing his rotator cuff, or LeBron James blowing out his knee. Takeru Kobayashi, the six-time defending Nathan's hot dog eating champion, received a chilling diagnosis that could end his Fourth of July roll: a creaky jaw.

The disclosure by the Japanese eating machine set stomachs rumbling throughout the dog-eat-dog world of competitive eating in the days before the annual Independence Day chowdown.

On Kobayashi's blog this week, the 29-year-old said a mouthful with the news that he was visiting a specialist and a chiropractor for relief. "Already I can't open my jaws more than just a little bit," he wrote.

Chestnut wins but both he and Kobayashi blast past the record final score 66-63.

Looked like the K-man hurled at the end.

Great run by Kayabashi, Chestnut set the pace to hang on at the end.

Just makes sense that an American should hold the hot dog eating crown.

Even considering Kobayashi's injury, Chestnut's momentum from the world record last month and all of Chestnut's trash talk, he only beat Kobayashi by 3 HDB's.

This rivalry isn't over yet. Kobayashi will be back. Mark it down.

I hope Kobyashi's reversal is played on highlight reels for years to come. It was HILIARIOUS

Aside from the sore jaw Kobayashi also had a wisdom tooth pulled last week

Chestnut is the real deal - he won the Wing-Bowl in Philly (big event, they actually get 20,000 into the Wachovia Center to watch people eat wings - it makes the Nathan's thing look amatuerish) this past year. And he's a star in the IFOCE (the International Federation of Competitive Eaters - yes, it actually does exist). I think Kobyashi is done.

I think I'd much rather stuff chicken wings down my face than hot dogs. xnodx

Over 30,000 squeezed into the streets at Surf Ave and Stillwell ave today for the Nathans hot dog contest, and oh ya, its broadcast nationaly on ESPN, but yes, its amatuerish.

I'll believe that 30,000 people crammed into those tiny streets when someone other than the people who organize the event (and I don't mean Wiki) confirm the number. The 20,000 for the WingBowl was in an actual arena with a confirmed capacity so it's easier to verify. And even in that setting most of the seats have little to no view of the eating action despite being an arena setup for at least something close to that. But I'm sure a street intersection can fit more and be better for viewing.

Oh, and why are you using a Mod username is this type of a response - this isn't normally something Mods get involved in. xreadx

So explain to me how the Japanese dude could regurgitate two handfuls of crap into is hands right as the final whistle blew and then spend the next 5 minutes re-eating it all and it counts?

It's referred to in the business as a "reversal of fortune"

For the life of me, I can't understand how any human being would want to watch those disgusting, degenerative, gluttonous, slobs wolfing down, and then regurgitating, food. Kind of reminds me of 'Old Rome', and we know what happened to that 'society'. :(
