No doubt.

I'm sure Grambling over its history has put more players in the NFL than a lot of FBS teams. xnodx

I think Elon has 17, including Nkang in the 2007 draft.

I believe our most famous NFL player was Rich McGeorge. He had a few pro bowl seasons as a TE/WR with Green Bay back in the 70s.

Our most famous athletic Alum is probably Jack McKeon.....but this isn't a baseball thread.

There is no draft for the Arena Football League. Players are not drafted they are signed to free agent contracts.

That would make it a tad more fun for UNI fans! xnodx

I'm not sure exactly, but not many and not in a long time. A number of free agent signings though. I know Jerry Richardson was drafted by the Colts back in the late 1950's. Now he owns the Carolina Panthers, so I guess that makes him the most famous.

Sure is...dispersal draft ;)

At least there was one back in the 90's.

Other than that, you are correct, players are not drafted out of school.

Being DII had many advantages in the draft years ago & nothing to be ashamed of. There were very few DI/Large college programs back in those days. The second college football game I ever went to was DII (it was still small college division then) ...one team had Ron Jaworski at QB, the other side had Roger Stauback taking their snaps. Both guys went on to be superbowl MVP's and hall-of-famers.

Not to be a contrarian, but Roger Staubach went for one year to New Mexico Military Institute (a junior college), and then three years to Navy. He never went to a Division II college.

Not sure about drafted but I believe we currently have 6 in the NFL and 9 throughout various other leagues....

Frosty,

There have been 33 Northwestern State players chosen in the NFL Draft, including nine in the last 11 seasons. Three Demons have gone in the top five rounds since 2002. NSU's highest pick was in the first round [17th. overall] when running back John Stephens was taken by the Patriots in 1988. (Stephens was later chosen AFC Rookie of the Year.) NSU has had seven go in the 2nd. round; and the busiest year was in 1999 when 3 Demons were drafted.

NSU has produced 8 NFL All-Pro players; 8 Super Bowl participants; 1 NFL Football Hall of Famer; and 2 College Football Hall of Famers.

There have been (and still are ) several in the CFL and a few in the USFL (including QB Bobby Hebert who went from the USFL to the Saints and finally the Falcons; a 14-year career).

Jermaine Jones (a 1999 6th round pick by the Chicago Bears) is currently a star DB for the Dallas Desperados in the Arena Football Leauge.

To date 64 Demons have been signed by professional football teams.

Staubach didn't technically play in D-II but he did play for Pensacola Navy while he was in the service. I'm sure he and Jaworski (Youngstown) probably did face one another. We played against them both.

Other UNH draftees:

John Driscoll, OT, Buffalo 12th round, 1988
Mike Foley, DE, Cardinals 5th round, 1996
Dwayne Gordon, LB, Dolphins 8th round, 1993 -- played 1993-2000 with the Dolphins, Falcons, Chargers and Jets (starter with the Jets IIRC)
Bob Jean, QB, Bengals 10th round, 1989
Ken Kaplan, OL, Bucs 6th round, 1983 -- played 1984-1987 (dates from media guide) with the Bucs and Saints.
Paul Lindquist, DT, Patriots 8th round, 1961
Dwayne Sabb, LB, Patriots 6th round, 1992 -- played 1992-1997 with the Patriots and Rams.

Other notable free agents:

Jason Ball, C, Chargers, 2002 -- played 2002-2004 (and started quite a bit)
Scott Curtis, LB, Eagles, 1988 -- played 1988-90 with the Eagles and Broncos.

Gordon, Sabb, and Kaplan (are you sure he was drafted and not a FA?) were all pretty good pros. Jason Ball was a shooting star for one brief year -- started for the Chargers, then disappeared. I think his Dad agent might have caused some folks to back off.....

Not knocking them for what they do, just pointing out what they do.

Lonie Paxton - long snapper for the Super Bowl Champion Patriots.
John Gesek - O-Lineman for the Dallas Cowboys in the days of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Daryl Johnston.
Charles Roberts - CFL record setter for rushing and all-purpose yards.
Ricky Ray - QB and Grey Cup winner for the Edmonton Eskimos.
Aaron Garcia - Arena Football League QB and passing record setter.

Great players all, but not the same without their teammates and coaches behind them. I think each one of them would agree with me.

No mention by UNH fans of Dan Kreider FB Steelers. I assume he was a F.A. Coincidently Delaware had a two year FB with the Steelers in the 80's named Dan Reeder although he was drafted by the Raiders in the 6th round. The Hens just dont have many draftees, due to the the wing-t offense we ran for 50 years.

Ironically, Gannon was drafted by New England to play DB in the 4th round. Not bad for a future NFL MVP!

Figures a Grambling guy would bring up this topic. As a kid I saw Grambling beat UD in the Boardwalk bowl. They had something like 10 guys in NFL camps the next year.

Yes, Kreider was a free agent who has parlayed his toughness into a nice career as Steelers' starting FB. Interesting to note, Kreider is a metro-Pittsburgh native.

I remember Gannon being drafted, but I thought the Pats wanted him as a RB. In any case, glad he stuck to his guns and forced someone to give him a try as QB. As you note, it worked out pretty well!

Remember the UD RB from the early early 1970's -- Nate Beasley? Big kid, tough, and he could play!

Thanks.....

I was too lazy to look that up....

Ourt most famous recently would probably be Coakley (think he is palying in Denver), but both Settle and Hackett made it to the Pro Bowl, possibly once in the same year.

i dont believe URI has any?

Probably Steve Furness in the 70's. Other than that, I'm pretty sure Frank Ferrara, who payed a few years with the Giants, was a undrafted free agent.

Page 88 of last year's media guide lists the other Rhody players to play in AFL, CFL, NFL Europe, etc.

I'm glad this thread got bumped - there's a piece on this in the 07 Mountaineer Media Guide.

A few guys predate Appaholic's list; they are:

1942 George Watts, Washington 15th round
1948 John Hollar, Chi. Cardinals 11th round
1949 Tom Murdock, Chi. Cardinals 16th round
1964 Larry Hand, Detroit 10th round (Hand was a 21st-rounder for the AFL's NY Jets)
1965 Larry Harbin, Detroit 8th round

Wayne Smith was the #1 Pick in the 2004 CFL Draft.

Looks like ASU has put about 30 guys in the NFL over the years.
