PHOENIX (TICKER) -- Former major league relief pitcher Rod Beck died Saturday at his home in northeast Phoenix, according to the Arizona Republic website.
Beck was 38.
The cause of death is unknown. Police are investigating because Beck was alone at the time of his death, but no foul play is expected.
The righthander was a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants (1991-97), Chicago Cubs (1998-99), Boston Red Sox (1999-2001) and San Diego Padres (2003-2004).
In 13 seasons, he compiled a 38-45 record and a 3.30 ERA with 286 saves.

Very sad news about the former All-Star closer for the Giants and Cubs who also played for the Red Sox and Padres. He really had some tough personal issues after his all-star years in San Fran and Chicago.
Yankee fans remember that he gave up a walk-off homer in the 10th inning to Bernie Williams to end Game 1 of the 1999 League Championship Series. After the game, he had the courage to face the intense New York and Boston media and answered every question before leaving the clubhouse. Michael Kay commented about Beck after that incident that you could see in the way he handled himself why he was a great closer.

I couldn't believe this when I heard it on the radio this morning! Anyone know why or how?
I remember him most as a Giant.

IMHO, we're going to start seeing more of these guys from this generation of baseball players pass in the near future from steroid abuse.

When he was with the I Cubs before getting sent up to the Chicago Cubs he lived in an RV in the parking lot of Sec Talyor stadium. He would sit out there drinking beer and chatting with fans real down to earth guy.

I think this might be proof that mullets are dangerous to your health. Mitch Williams' days are numbered.
