View Full Version : Update on Deion Sanders and Jackson State

Jackson State is closing in on a hire, and sources continue to indicate that Deion Sanders has been the target of Jackson State’s search to become the Tigers’ next head coach.
FootballScoop first reported on Sanders’ candidacy late last month. Local reporters confirmed representatives of JSU had met with Sanders; but subsequently denied that Sanders was truly a candidate to the local newspaper. Sanders recently left NFL Network for Barstool Sports and is active on Twitter, and — unless we’ve missed it — thus far has not addressed the report.

Deion Sanders, a Pro and College Football Hall of Famer, is expected to be named the next head coach at Jackson State, sources told HBCU Sports.
Sources indicated that Sanders, who is currently the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian High School in Desoto, Texas, where his son, Shedeur, is the starting quarterback, will be named JSU’s head coach.
A press conference, sources said, is expected Monday at 10 a.m.
Sanders surfaced as a candidate for the Jackson State job after the school decided not to move forward with John Hendrick in a surprise move in late August.

Deion Sanders reportedly expected to be next Jackson State coach, university rep says 'nothing is official'
Deion Sanders could be headed to the Magnolia State after all.
Kendrick Marshall of HBCU Sports reported Sanders will be named Jackson State's next head coach Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday night, Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson announced the program will name its new head coach in "five-to-six days." ESPN's The Undefeated also listed Sanders a rumored candidate for the position Wednesday night.

Why are they desparate?
Deion is a High School Offensive Coordinator. He has never coached FCS football. Or recuited. Or had to keep kids eligible.
JSU tried this already with Harold Jackson. He was a former NFL player. Went 6-11 and was fired. They are desperate because they are using Deion to get media attention on the program.
JSU needs a proven HC to rebuild that program.
It will be good TV tho

Even in our case, we hired two unproven and no HC'ing experience in Willie Simmons and now Eric Dooley. Guess we should have never hired both lol.
There has to be a start somewhere and I certainly wish fhe best for JSU as they help our conference continue to elevate.

TAPPS is such an odd collection of schools. TC-Cedar Hill says it's the "oldest and largest Christian school in South Dallas" (Bishop Dunne HS would beg to differ, and TC isn't even in Dallas) but the high school is only about 110 boys in grades 9-12.

Actually, Briles didn't become HC at UH straight from Stephenville. He has a short stop as RB coach at Texas Tech.
As for Deion Sanders as a HC in FCS, I think the biggest problem is that he has a HUGE ego and he will make everything about him.

Tapping the brakes here on JSU's march to the Celebration Bowl.
Eighty percent of being a head coach takes place off the football field and this is Sanders' biggest challenge. Put aside the change from living in a $21 million estate in Frisco to a house in Jackson, or him sitting in a classroom to take a course on NCAA compliance, he's running every facet of a team, from chasing down kids that aren't going to class to getting in a car (post-virus) to meet some recruit in Vicksburg or Meridian or Hattiesburg and get back home to start the next day all over again. He's got to shake hands with alumni, show up at the local radio station to do interviews, fundraise, and draw up a game plan for 80 or 90 kids he's never seen in person. Even more important, he's got a learning curve with every single high school coach in Mississippi to whom JSU recruits, and win them over; and when someone asks "what's in it for me?" (figuratively or literally), he has to understand this is the SWAC, not the SEC.
Two years older than Sanders, Patrick Ewing has been down this same road in basketball. Ewing became a first time head coach at 55 and the question was "can he coach?" Yes, he can coach (16 years as an NBA assistant helped), but recruiting is tough. As he has said, and I paraphrase, when the parents are more excited to see him, that's usually a sign he's not getting the recruit. Ewing hasn't signed a single Top 75 recruit at Georgetown. He doesn't have the local high school coaching relationships other schools have built, and as such Maryland and Villanova get the first tier of local recruits. In three seasons he's 19-35 in the Big East, 49-46 overall, and no NCAA appearances.
A recruit might be interested in playing for Prime Time, but really that kids wants be playing for the NFL, whether that's at Jackson State, Boise State or Truman State. (Remember, a 2021 recruit was born in 2003 and never saw him play professionally.) JSU has gone seven years without a divisional title, 13 without a SWAC title, and are 0-12 all time in NCAA playoff action. The alumni are hopeful but they're not going to be tolerant of on the job training for very long. He's got to hit the ground running.

The ONLY questions I have are his loyalty and commitment to JSU and growing our conference, since he is a TU graduate, and where is his heart. (bcs game? bcs notoriety? $$$$$?)

I thought they migrated from C to U status? xconfusedx I knew that coach Sanders graduated talla recently as I read his poignant graduation speech. The fla-st folk should somewhat be in their feels, considering he is a graduate of talla-college vs their institution.
Haven’t read up on talla since 2016 w/ that 2017 sellout $$$ move they made. I know the original TU folk will be in their feels like the HU vs HI/“real HU” situation if they change their known acros from TC to TU.

“It” is happening, as expected.
Coach Sanders wasted little time & offered 2 defensive 5*s a full-ride to JSU Monday evening and the two young men and their families were very public w/ their responses and eager enthusiasm to consider JSU as one of their top choices.
“ :D ... xconfusedx “ that’s the look of disdain when saban’s “handlers,” his recruiters, realized their 2 coveted and prized bulls were being asked to return... to shore up and right... :D
We will see what’s what shortly as signing day early period Dec and historical Feb are evident. :)

Yeah I'm still looking to purchase that book "The proper time to fire a coach." It always seems to be sold out
While perhaps there is never a good time to fire a coach, coaching changes usually happen right after the regular season. It's just very unusual to see a coaching change this late in a year (or this early in the year depending on how you look at it).

I think recruits will still find him relevant, and I have no doubt he will recruit well. I do have doubts that he will want to do all the little things that an FCS HC has to do - It's not always the most glamorous job, especially since for many it's a good living, but for PrimeTime - he could make more with a much cushier TV gig.

Going to be fun to have Deion in FCS while he’s here.
I’m sure there are others, but he should probably check-in with Mike Minter @ Campbell about how he transitioned from NFL glitz / glamor to FCS Football. He had a couple of years of college experience (JC Smith (D2) & Liberty) until he took the Campbell HC gig, but FUBeAR’s impression is that Coach Minter has really put in THE WORK to build something in Buies Creek.

Being a public university, can they legally ban the press from press conferences? Would that not violate the 1st Amendment that prevents the government from silencing voices they do not "approve" of? Since they take public tax dollars, this should be an open and shut case, no?
As PC pointed out, media reporters refer to NDSU coach as Matt. Informally, you will hear people say "coach" to him, but during media requests, I have heard them say Matt multiple times with no problem.

Very true, so long as ALL of the reporters are requested to do the same. If this individual has been singled out as not being allowed to refer to him by his first name, there is an issue with how it was handled by Coach Sanders. If nobody is allowed to call him by his first name in the press conference, the only issue is the individual reporter failing to respect his wishes.

How hard is it to understand that relationships matter? That reporter isn't "relationship-close" to coach Prime nor does he most have any semblance of a decent relationship with him; hence why coach Prime DIRECTLY requested "don't address me as Deion; you can call me coach Prime." Smarty pants responded with "Deion." So, coach Prime did what most of us would do: laugh at the stupidity and remove ourself physically from the ignorant presence. :D
I have an earned nickname and I do NOT allow any stranger to ever call me by that name but those I know and am comfortable with, they are more than welcome to call me that earned nickname; otherwise, stranger, call me by my first name.
It's sad when strangers try to play one "relationship-close" to the hilt when in actuality they are nothing but unimportant fodder which happens in our environment(s). It's a cultural thing; most cannot pretend to understand. xreadx

You're right, I don't understand. Prime is a nickname whereas Deion is his first name. Using your analogy I would expect him to be less receptive to someone calling him Prime than calling him Deion. Agreed, as long as there is consistency in the stance. You choose who gets to call you what. Coach Sanders gets to choose who gets to call him what, but as a public figure he can't tell ONE reporter to address him a certain way if he allows all the others to address him differently. If he asks all of them to call him "Coach Prime" until otherwise instructed, he is certainly right to do so.
As an aside, since his nickname is Prime Time, shouldn't the correct way to address him be "Coach Time" since that's his "last" name?

Well you hit on your worn out trope of you being an ass again when it comes to human interaction.xrotatehx
