0 chance for first ballot HOF. McGwire got less than 25% and he is in that group as well. See the HR Stats below (Year, games, HRs). Right or not, it'll take a while if he makes it in

McGuire is in what group? He doesn't have 600 HR's--he retired with 583.

the steroid group
Alleged steroid group.
McGwire may have, Sammy no way.
McGwire trained like a bodybuilder and got those type of results, if he would have trained for baseball, he would have lasted longer.
Sammy doesn't have a steroid body, IMO.

Oh, I'd bet money Sammy did roids. I'll never forget when baseball started clamping down on roids, the Spring when both Sammy and Jason Giambi came to spring training about 20 lbs lighter, and both claimed it was because of offseason training regimens....riiiiiiiiiiiggghhhhhhtttttttt......and then Giambi proceeded to spend most of the year on the DL from an intestinal "virus". Sounds more like DT's from coming off the roids....
BUT, since we'll in all probability never know, I say he gets in. Not first ballot, but he gets in. xcoolx

God, he looks like a little kid in that first picture. xeekx xeekx
I watched (on ESPN Classic) clips from the '85 Series between KC and St. Louis....it was funny as hell seeing those toothpicks running around the bases....they looked like they should have been in the Little League WS, and not the MLB World Series. xeyebrowx xeyebrowx

He did the 'roids - I loved when he came in front of Congress and rather than answer the questions he said he couldn't understand English - priceless. No way he gets in first ballot, and he'll be waiting quite a few years before he has a chance to get in. 292 of those home runs came duing the peak of the steroid era in 1998 through 2002. If he ever gets in will depend on where baseball goes with this steroid thing and how much they find out. If it's shown that he definitively took the 'roids then he'll never get in.

Not that I think it would be reason enough to keep him off, but Sammy wasn't a winner and was always very selfish (coming from a Cub fan). I liked Sammy a lot until his last season, when he walked out on the team in the middle of a game toward the end of the '04 season. I thought that spoke volumes about him as a ballplayer and competitor.
Aside from that, Sammy spent the entire first half of his career concerned only about his numbers. I can remember then-manager Jim Riggleman chewing him out in the dugout for trying to steal meaningless bases toward the end of some season to try and get to 30-30.
Oh, and ya can't forget about this:

According to Baseball Almanac, Sammy weighed 185 as a rookie in 1989-90. I've seen his stats say 220 now. Sammy was a 21 year old kid in that first picture, and an elite athlete in his prime in the 2nd.
Gaining 35 lbs of muscle over 10-15 years is very easy to do with diet and exercise.
I worked in the fitness field for 5 years and most people can average .5 to 1 lb of muscle gain per week.
It's tough to get those gains during the season, but at that rate it would only take Sammy 2-3 offseasons to put on that kind of muscle.
Sammy admitted to using Creatine and Glutamine, these help you work out harder and repair muscle tissue faster, these would also help achieve those kinds of gains in a short time frame.
If you've ever taken these supplements you'd know what I'm talking about. I personally have gained 20 lbs in one semester of college using these 2 supplements, and I never juiced.

Conventional wisdom says yes, but I think the combined steroid allegations, corked bat and "No habla inglés" to Congress will outlast the 600+ home runs and the "baseball been very good to me".
If Shoeless Joe Jackson is being held out by association (even though he didn't participate) in the 1919 Black Sox scandal, certainly Sosa's collection of transgressions will keep him out. But, Sammy has lots of fans out there and might sneak in anyway.

Someone else already stated it well: McGwire got voted on only 25% of the ballots. Sosa should be right around the same neighborhood, which has him thousands of miles from Cooperstown. He could hit 800, he won't get in.

First off, Shoeless Joe is not allowed to be on the ballot - he is banned from baseball, so his is a different case.
Second off, Sosa has a better shot than McGwire because he is playing again and being tested. A year or two of clean tests, and he'll be "cleaner" in the eyes of the voters than McGwire.
Third, I went from 190 at my wedding in 1999 to 240+ today, and I've never done 'roids, so I'm not sure his weight gain proves anything :) :)

Put him in with 601 HR's roids or no roids. So many pitchers/hiters were roided up it's all tainted anyway, no way to figure out all of the roiders.
