So, CAA teams still can play each other, and the games "won't count" in Conf. standings? Or ZERO games against conf. teams.

JMU in Fargo sounds like a hell of a non conference matchup for mid September. I'm actually surprised JMU is going out on a limb to play an independent schedule. The cost has to be significant as their current schedule only has 2 games that will be on the slate as of today, hosting Chattanooga and Merrimack. If they can get a date with NDSU, maybe schedule in state Liberty & ODU, UCONN and mix in some FCS teams then it's worth it. With success with that schedule they may look harder at moving up to the FBS level

Brian McLaughlin of HERO Sports is reporting that JMU, Delaware, Towson, and Elon are all exploring putting together an independent schedule and playing games this fall.

This is likely going to make other conferences push the envelope in terms of making a decision so, in the event that the conference season is cancelled, member schools could have time to pursue an independent schedule if they so choose. I'd expect the MVFC and Big Sky, among others, to be making decisions very soon on this.

I just saw Towson is looking to try to schedule an independent schedule which could work if they worked out a Home/Home with JMU, got Liberty, and some NEC/Big South schools

The schools that are deciding to play Indy schedules are those that should probably be on the FBS level. The big hurdle for this is testing cost and mitigation and many schools can't afford that additional cost.

Furman's AD had a social media post today that certainly makes it sound like the SoCon is still moving forward. Most press releases note that they are "continuing to monitor" the situation, so I guess anything is possible.

I am inclined to think that the SoCon and perhaps Southland might be in a little different spot because of their comparatively small geographic footprint when compared to the large territories covered by conferences like the CAA and Big Sky.

Schools had better realize what type of message they are sending to future players by putting teams out there on the field right now. Especially considering how volatile of an environment it already is. I'd imagine that's a nice statement to make to parents that actually care about their kids well being.

Many of these kids just want to play this season and believe they are immune to COVID-19 I don't think a school fielding a team this fall during the pandemic will have any issues with future recruits. Now parents yes may feel some type of way but at the end of the day these kids are making the decision on their own.

It'll be interesting to see how many of the seniors and r-seniors are retained for 2021. Those with no pro aspirations or who weren't starters will probably opt to take the graduation and enter the work force option but those who thought they had a chance to get drafted/sign UDFA deals in 2021 will want to play out the last year. Do they take a hit on their athletic aide so they can keep their 2021 recruits? Or do the 2021 recruits get told to delay enrollment until January 2022?

I don't think many are money makers in the first place but even if they are/were recently their will be enough people not attending that making money would not be much of an issue anyway I think.

I was hoping that the Blue Hens could schedule one of the Valley schools near me early in the season so I could watch. The only state that I haven't watch a college team from is Delaware.

College age people aren't very likely to distance themselves anyway even if there isn't a season. If there is a season they'll get access to more frequent testing as well as better and more easily accessible medical care. The risk is very miniscule to college age people anyway. The bigger concern to me would be for coaches and other support personnel that are more likely to have some of the common comorbidities and be in generally poorer health than the players.

We are talking about 18-23 year old players. Does anyone really believe they are going to stay in their parents homes doing on-line learning and spend their evenings with Bible study with grandma?

Cell phone data demonstrates that people were loosening up on social distancing well before states began loosening restrictions. You can't keep people locked up in their home indefinitely.

Depending on the exact living situations of individual players, many would be more likely to catch the disease at home than on a football field or college campus.

I suspect the SoCon plays in the fall unless the NCAA moves playoffs to Spring. Most schools are not located in large cities. VMI and The Citadel socially isolate as it is. WCU is hidden in the mountains, FU is geographically isolated on the outskirts of Travelers Rest. Wofford has a contained campus with very few non-residential students. Samford doesn't seem to have many spectators at their games. Only Chattanooga and Mercer would seem to have potential problems.

With COVID apparently peaking now in much of the South, we should be well down the backside of the Bell curve by September - although the virus has never really followed anyone's predictions in the past.

1)They shouldn't be going anywhere near grandma! Being isolated on a college campus along with other young, healthy students is the best place to be. When you have college kids "stay home" for online learning, they are instead out in the marketplace potentially infecting a wide range of demographics rather than just other young, healthy students.

2) When people in current hot spots say "We'll be out of this by September", remember that New York entered the belly of the beast 3-4 months before you did and we are nowhere close to endorsing the re-start of college sports. We probably aren't even going to allow public schools to re-open on time -- which is insane considering that on Saturday July 11th we recorded ZERO DEATHS IN THE ENTIRE STATE. And I think 5 deaths total were recorded this past Friday.
