I like having a comprehensive list like this because it is so easy to miss something with all of the rapid changes.

Yes - my list is NCAA Sports - the others are varsity sports, but don't compete at the NCAA level.

That is what the article I posted said. The title was too long so I did leave Stanford in there (title) but took away the tailing description of the number of sports etc.

Meanwhile... are you all aware of a coach-run movement that is against this alarming trend?

When you read the article and see the gargantuan sums spent by some schools on 'upgrades' to their already swanky facilities if makes one want to puke. What a revoltin' mess college athletics has become...

It is what it is.

Paid for by lucrative TV deals, conference only TV revenue and alum donations. Sports is engrained in American society and I don't have a problem with it.

Students already have the Fed gov to fund their tuition needs so.......

Playing devil's advocate for a moment:

Do college campuses need all of these sports? Seriously, do they need a tennis team, field hockey, swimming/diving, golf, bowling, crew, gymnastics, soccer and so forth....?? Could these type of sports be fostered off campus, like in a club setting where the kids would pay to actually play the sport? Or something like AAU in basketball in the summer or traveling soccer teams?

Soccer and baseball played on campus could bring students and alumni on to campus. The other sports for the most part don't, and most participants are not on scholarship.

My feeling is the schools should belong to traditional conferences for the handful of sports fans actually watch, and the other sports should be played in geographically compact conferences. Theses non-revenue conferences could even include schools from different divisions. To me, tennis and golf are individual participant sports and don't really fit the college team model.

They are no more individual than track, cross country, wrestling, swimming, etc. That said, golf, like bowling, is really a game, much like billiards, darts, etc.
