UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- A pair of Spiders turned in stellar performances against stacked fields during the last full week of June. Rising senior Andrew McInerney shared medalist honors at the Granite Links Golf Club qualifier for the Massachusetts Amateur Championship in Quincy, Mass. and rising junior Michael Childress tied for eighth at the Golf Week Myrtle Beach Collegiate in Myrtle Beach, S.C. McInerney, from Natick, Mass., played his first 13 holes in two-under par en route to a round of 71 (-1) in the 18-hole qualifier on Tuesday, June 23. He and Eric Lifson of Nashawtuc Country Club shared medalist honors as the only players in the field of 69 to shoot under par. With his performance, McInerney earned a spot in the 112th Massachusetts Amateur Championship, which will be held at The Kittansett Club and The Bay Club at Mattapoisett. The competition will consist of two days of stroke play beginning on July 13 with the top 32 players advancing to match play. The day after McInerney's showing, Childress teed off at the 54-hole Golf Week Myrtle Beach Collegiate at Barefoot Resort. Playing the Dye course, Childress opened with an even-par 72 on Wednesday before firing a one-under 71 on Thursday. In Friday's final round, he fought back from a pair of early double bogeys to play his next 10 holes in five-under par before closing with a pair of bogeys for a round of 73 (+1). Childress's 54-total of 216 (E) tied for eighth in the field of 78. Childress is expected to return to competition at the 106th Carolinas Amateur Championship at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, N.C. on July 9.
