View Full Version : The Fun Leading Upto The Trade Deadline

In NASCAR they call it Silly Season and some of the names being tossed around as targets fans want Boston going after before the July 31 trade deadline makes you wonder if MLB should call it the same thing.

Torri Hunter? Ichiro Suzuki? Some fans want both of them in the lineup this summer and beyond.

Sure that would be great, but we need to think ahead. The Sox only have three outfield positions and JD Drew is locked very expensively into one of them for the foreseeable future.

Coco Crisp surely doesn't have a secure job, but who exactly would you rather have roaming center long term, an aging Ichiro, a similarly aging Hunter or the hot prospect in Pawtucket Jacoby Ellsbury? If one single Sox fans says anything other then Ellsbury, smack yourself now because you deserve it.

In Chicago it should be fun as potential FAs Jermaine Dye, Mark Buehrle, and Tadahito Iguchi will surely be shopped at the deadline...

I can see Ellsbury for the near future, but we need immediate help this season. Something by way of a centerfielder that can lead off.

I'd love to see the Sox pick up Ichiro.

Ya but Ichiro is at the age where he will want one final "big" contract and I think delaying Ellsbury for 4 or 5 years is the wrong move.

Perhaps Coco made a turn last nite and is actually ready to live up to his expectations, one could only hope.

Hunter is the best defensive centerfielder in baseball, and the Twins may not be able to sign him after the season. Rumor is he wants to finish his career in his home state of Texas.

Keep Coco Crisp (say that fast three times) with an eye towards Ellsbury later in the season or next year...

Crisp has potential that he hasn't shown until lately...he's got speed...

I agree we DON"T trade Ellsbury away...

The Phillies seem to be in a hurry to get rid of Rowand, maybe that could work for the Sawx

I'm pretty sure BoSox will not sit around this year and will pick up a lead off batter before the deadline.

And I don't know what my buddy Travis don't like about Ichiro. Old at 33? No way.

I'll take his lifetime .332 BA, 1454 hits, 254 stolen bases, and 6 GOLD GLOVES any day! xthumbsupx

Hes getting to the age where the fall off will begin.

Its not that I dont like Ichiro, its just that I dont see where he would fit in.

Signing him delays Ellsbury and Ichiro is gonna be looking towards a 5 yr deal. We cant afford two light hitting speed demons in the same outfield. IF we didnt have Ellsbury in the minors then I would be all for Ichiro but we do have Ellsbury and there is more upside to him.

Who's talking about having two light weights in the OF?

Coco with his .247 BA, a paltry .303 OBP, and .347 SLG would not be starting. I'd trade him, but I doubt there would be any takers.

I'd put Ichiro in RF when Ellsbury is ready. Haven't had an arm like his in RF since Dewey Evans.

I was thinking the same thing, but not for the same reason. Need a good defensive RF with range in Fenway -- the reason Manny was switched to LF when he joined the Sox.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the Sox didn't re-sign Trot Nixon? He wouldn't have commanded a huge salary so he could have been a platoon player and hopefully kept healty, he wanted to stay in Boston, he was a home grown player who was loved in Boston, he wouldn't have required a long term deal like Drew, etc. I mean was Trot that much of a health risk that it was worth the financial commitment for Drew? So far Trot is outperforming Drew to boot (last time I looked ;) :p ). That could change, but.............

I'm old school and in my book you give a lifer like Trot the option of being a reserve or platoon with Wily Mo Pena (now that was a great trade xrolleyesx xrolleyesx ). It's not like he was asking for a risky long term deal like Pedro and Damon did! Trot's salary would have been a blip on the Red Sox payroll.

Sorry for the tangent! :p How well has Ichiro hit at Fenway? His OBP should thrill the brass and having a third Japanese player should only help things with Dice K and Okie Dokey.

You don't hear those kind of rumors in St. Petersburg, unless it's trading a young player for an old one. Anybody want Elijah Dukes? xconfusedx xlolx

If the Mariners traded Ichiro, they might as well fold up and become the Seattle Pilots. He may be the ONLY thing bringing people to that ballpark. It sure as HELL ain't Adrian Beltre or that suckass first baseman Richie Sexon.

And if they DO trade him, Boston would be stupid not to go get him. xnodx

Ellsbury and Ichiro are light weights in terms of power numbers. Ideally you want atleast 2 of ur 3 OFs to have 30+ HR potential.

There not gonna trade him, but Boston and NY would be the top suitors this offseason when hes a FA and looking to be somewhere he can win.

Who wants Teixeira? Or Gagne? Otsuka? The Rangers will take your best offers.

BTW, I hope Torii Hunter ends up with the Rangers.
