If the AAC can call themselves the P6, why not start referring to the FCS as the G6?

Enjoy.

I thought the whole point of FCS was to be who we are and to prove ourselves on the field, rather than try to creatively name our way to relevance?

Perhaps you guys were in the FBS too long and haven't gotten all the Kool-Aid out of your system yet?

We are all on the island of misfit toys at the FCS level....to talk of "power conferences" at the FCS level is oxymoronic.

It's not going to mater when the P5 separates completely from the NCAA in football.

When it does, the NCAA will give FCS schools the option to increase scholarships or drop to D2. That dont necessarily mean that the current FBS G5 schools will keep 85 scholarships, the NCAA may decide that middle ground will be taken and make it 75 and D1 is D1. No FCS or FBS, just strictly D1, D2 and D3.

What if the Group of 5 and the FCS came together to form a new division 1.5 with its own postseason system? Obviously it is far fetched, but the G5 has no realistic shot of making the FBS playoffs. They are in football limbo as it were.

I was simply saying the FCS is on many levels equal to the G5. By calling the FCS the "G6" was meant to take away some of the separation from those team and schools that see the FCS as such a different level.

Good night.

If that was truly the case, Idaho would have never dropped down from FBS G5 to FCS.

You’d probably lose over half of the FCS. Outside of the MVFC, Big Sky, and the CAA, the rest of the FCS won’t compete well with teams like UCF and Boise State.

What you are outlining would effectively manifest itself in a combination of the G5 and entirety of FCS and possibly lead to the creation of a three-tier Division I with a "I-AAA" level. This is because you can't force the Patriot League, Pioneer, Ivy or NEC to decide between ramping up scholarships to any particular level or move to D-II. Because everyone in FCS is a Division I member, by virtue of the Dayton Rule, they cannot just drop football to D2 unless the entire athletic dept. did so. You could plausibly have a scenario where the MVC, CAA, Big Sky and SoCon join the G5 while the rest of FCS (Southland, OVC, Big South, Ivy, PL, NEC, MEAC, SWAC, Pioneer) forms the third tier.

My prediction: the first shoe to drop in this restructuring is that the MAC will drop down as a conference to FCS -- give it 10 years.

Championships for everyone!!!

Also the MAC won’t drop to FCS, as stated in a previous thread it’s far more profitable to remain FBS and be a sacrificial lamb 1-2 times a year against the P5. They’d prefer playing in the Boca Raton Bowl over the FCS title.

I was talking about whole athletics departments dropping.

If the P5 decided to split, it would be for football only. They are not going to give up the money associated with the basketball tournament. So effectively, the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 12 would become non football conferences. The football programs from those conferences would split, have their own rules, not play any current G5 or FCS programs.

The rest of us, will still be playing those schools in all other sports, like it is today, D1. But in football, there will be no FBS, FCS. It will be whatever you want to call the P5 schools after the split, and NCAA D1 football.

If the schools, or conferences want to compete at the D1 level, and not have the same amount of scholarships in football, I'm sure they can, but they cannot argue they would be at a disadvantage.

If the schools that dont think they can increase or dont want to increase football scholarships, and dont want to be a part of this, or think they would finance wise be better off, they would have the option to go to D2 or D3 for all sports.

There are several D1 schools that honestly should not be in D1 at this time. There are several D2 schools that probably should be but want to be the "big fish in a small pond". But this would make some of the D1 schools that should probably feasibly go to D2, look at it a little harder.

There are probably 40-50 FCS schools who honestly should drop to D2 or D3 while a few in D2 could move up to the new NCAA D1.

Did you guys read this article from Dodd at CBS? https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/why-we-may-be-reaching-a-tipping-point-for-the-power-five-to-break-away-from-the-fbs/

I am with him that most of the G5 would stay NCAA and some would actually go with the P5s. If 90-100 schools go who are the 30-40 who stay behind with FCS? Would the FCS change names and would minimum requirements be put in place? Who would be the G5 schools to fill out to 90 something when P5 has 65 schools?

Here is my guess at the 30 schools who would fill out the 95, if we indeed saw 90 leave the NCAA. Pretty much anyone who averages over 20k. I'm taking 95 to split the difference.

Complete 2020 AAC (Cincy, UCF, Temple, Memphis, SMU, USF, ECU, Navy, Tulane, Houston, Tulsa)
Army
BYU
Some from CUSA (La Tech, Marshall, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB)
Some from MAC (Toledo)
Most of MWC (Boise St, Air Force, Colorado St, Fresno St, Hawaii, San Diego St, Utah St, Wyoming)
SBC (Arkansas St, App St, Troy)

I am pretty sure someone else from MWC and MAC would attempt to go as well but not sure who. MWC would need enough to have a conference title game. I know UNLV and Nevada would try to go but not sure if they could. I'm also thinking the AAC will fill from CUSA, SBC, and Army and then you would see CUSA and SBC change heavily. SBC probably goes away and those 2-3 who would leave NCAA would have to join a new league.

I'm guessing that 2 from the AAC will go to the Big 12 potentially and that would leave 3 holes since they already have to replace UCONN now.

I dont see it happening like that really.

I see the P5 programs, with the possible exception of a few, just separate football completely from the NCAA. No G5 will join them. They will play themselves. It will be regional instead of conferences.

The rest of their sports will stay with the NCAA. Their conference (SEC, ACC) and so on, will no longer sponsor football. Take the SEC, it will still have the same schools, just no football. Those schools will organize with the football schools from the other P5 conference's, and play their games. There will not be conference games, just regional rankings, and then from the 4 regions, a playoff.

Ah, look at this. People are actually talking college football.

Yes, I believe the level of play in the Big Sky is equal to the Sun Belt. That is why I think it is appropriate to call the FCS the "G6."

The AAC is doing a pretty good job of separating themselves from the rest of the G5.

A P5 basketball tournament would bring in a lot more money than March Madness. The NCAA would basically have the Big East, A-10 and Gonzaga.

In football, there is the P5 and then everybody else

You can even argue that there are a dozen perennial teams and everybody else.

Where would the FCS Top 25 fit within the MAC, Sun Belt, and C-USA? I think those teams blend with the G5.

Hard to say for sure, but Sagarin is one of the only that I know of that ranks all DI schools together. This was as of the end of last season: https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

NDSU is way up at 31, JMU at 50, then you start getting into more of the top schools in the lower 80 range with Montana State at 87, Weber State at 88, Montana at 90, in among teams like 89 Arkansas State, 86 Western Michigan, 91 Kent State, and 92 Georgia Southern, etc. You also occasionally see the really bad P5 teams down there as well...Maryland at 97, Georgia Tech at 107, Rutgers at 135.

Then you get into the really bad G5 schools as far down as UMass at 232. For comparison, my own Leathernecks, who went 1-11 in a particularly horrible season, are above them at 211. I don't know that we'd actually beat them in a head-to-head matchup, but I don't think it'd be a blowout. SIU beat UMass 45-20 near the beginning of the season, then beat us 45-21 near the end of the season, so we're at least in the same ballpark.

Massey, not the composite, does all Div I together as well. You just have to select it from pull down menu.
