View Full Version : Your school's most played opponents

I figured this would be a fun thing to look at, especially in this long, slow summer.

Furman's most played opponents:

The Citadel: 86 games, 54-29-3 record, first game in 1913

Wofford: 80 games, 49-24-7 record, first game in 1889(first football game in SC)

Clemson: 54 games, 10-40-4 record, first game in 1896

Davidson: 54 games, 39-15 record, first game in 1906

Presbyterian: 50 games, 38-11-1, first game in 1913

South Carolina: 47 games, 20-26-1, first game in 1892

After that, we've played a handful of current/former SoCon members 30 or so times. It's a shame that, because of the ever-changing landscape of the conference, Furman doesn't have all that many long rivalries.

UND, 45-62-3 first game in 1894
SDSU, 51-37-5 first game in 1904
South Dakota, 48-25-3 first game in 1900
Augustana College, 43-12-2 first game in 1946
UNI, 18-22 first game in 1933
Montana State, 12-21 first game in 1914
Northern Colorado, 22-8 first game in 1937
Nebraska-Omaha, 25-12-1 first game in 1938
Minn. State - Mankato, 26-6-0 first game in 1960

We have left some of these rivals behind(Augie, UNO, and MSU-Mankato), some will probably be regulars once again(UND and USD), one we have tried to restart playing again(Montana State), and one will once again be played yearly(UNI old NCC foe). Then there is SDSU who has been a forever regular and is also becoming a bigger rival. UNC was a big rival in our DII days and now I don't know what is going on with them in regards to scheduling NDSU.

Well Richmond's most played rival is the College of William and Mary, with a total of 116 games and a record of 52-59-5. Next up in Division I is VMI with 84 games and a record of 39-40-5. Finally is Virginia Tech with 51 games and a record of 10-37-4. UR has also played a couple of now DIII teams a good deal of times, with Randolph-Macon at 87 games, 57-23-7, and Hampden-Sydney at 59 games, 34-16-9. All are obviously in the state of Virginia.

MPLSBISON,

I too hope we can keep this tivalry going. Our two programs have had mutual respect for each other throughout our D2 days, and I would hate to see an end to such competition. You will be surely missed as a conference foe, but I really don't see either of us avoiding the best the FCS has to offer. So, I guess we will be seeing quite often in the future whether as a scheduled or unscheduled (playoffs) opponent. Good luck Bison, but when we come there don't expect us to be an easy win. We have fared well there in the recent past.

The last time we played Towson before they joined the then A-10 was '92 (they joined in '04). That combined with us not losing to them since they joined, can easily lead to the sentiment that it's not much of a 'rivalry'.

Hasn't Gettysburg belonged to Division III since the inception of the divisions by the NCAA in 1973? Prior to that, Gettsyburg was part of the MAC with Delaware and others, which was recognized as part of the NCAA's Small College classification.

They have had a relatively successful run in III doubt they would move up. Even in the old MAC they were not consitently competitive altho I remember a couple of yrs ( 65-66 )where they had a very good QB beat LU altho back then we were terrible.

Gettysburg certainly fits in well with PL from an academic standpoint. Their football was horrible in the mid-70s when we last played them--some of the games were embarrassing. They have done very well at the D-III level, and I'd be surprised if they'd be in a position to spend the additional dollars necessary to become competitive at the FCS level.

Well, next time don't break the rythym by opting out of a long term rivalry like you guys did in the late 80's when you were worried you couldn't compete anymore when you entered the Patriot League. Prior to that, we played almost every year (alternating home sites) going back well into the 60's and maybe even further. UD was content to continue the series as it was (playing every other year at Lehigh). And even when we played in the 90's it was basically a home and home affair - at UD in '93, '96, and '99 and at Goodman in '94 and '97. Unfortunately, it didn't try to get restarted like the past rivalry was until after UD started selling out every home game and now it's going to be hard to wean UD off of that cash cow that is the home gate. It wouldn't have got to that, though, if you guys didn't balk in the '80's and stop the rivalry. xthumbsupx

They would be ideal in their location, tradition, size, and academic profile. But they seem comfortable in D-III and I doubt they have the motivation to make make to jump.

After this coming season, it's interesting to note that W&M will slide into 8th place and UNH into 10th place. UMass drops off the Top 10, at least temporarily.

For those of you who aren't familiar with these schools, Widener (f/k/a Pennesylvania Military College) currently competes in D-III and Haverford (PA) College discontinued its team in 1972. They were old time rivals of UD. West Chester (PA) University is a D-II team.

So true, Getysburg really has all the qualities the PL covets. They are a liberal arts school of about 2,500 students, academics very similar to Pl schools, have tradition in both athletics and academics, and could be a very attractive choise for FCS student athletes. I guess we can only dream though and settle for MArist or Bryant.

I wish Morningside would have left the NCC much earlier. They did not belong in the conference at all. Teams like the 4 Dakota schools did not deserve to play that school in football every year, let alone on the road every other year in that hole of a stadium they played in. It was a tiny private school of 1,000 students. It had no business being in the NCC all those decades.

Yes, we have played Bucknell the 2nd most out of anyone behind Lehigh of course, but we still played Rutgers a whopping 72 times. Which is a ton considering we havent played in about 30 years, and our record vs. them is an acceptable 30-41-1. What is not acceptable is our records against Penn and Princeton. My sig line is what it is. I'm not coming in demanding respect, I will let the team's play (hopefully it does) do it. Just like what NDSU has done. (and that's a credit to you)

Don't you think that a team should come in and prove to themselves and others that they belong, rather than just coming in and expecting everybody to bow down in front of them. I think the Bison did a great job proving themselves, why can't anyone else?

The schedule will come. NDSU and SDSU went through the scheduling pains too. Bottom line, you have to take care of business whoever is on your schedule.

Now back to the topic at hand...

Agreed. Alot of people thought that Augie and Morningside were in the same boat. That is not the case. Augie was (and still is) a team that offers fits when you least expect them to. They have developed themselves into a solid DII athletic program.

I did. Sorry, I failed to give credit where credit is due. Hopefully that series record is not set in stone between these two squads...

True, but only by virtue of the fact that Lafayette and Lehigh played each other multiple times in the same season during the 19th century. But no two teams have played each other in more seasons than Yale and Princeton, a series interrupted only by war since Grant was in the White House.
