The NBA announced earlier this evening that it is suspending its season due to COVID-19. One of its players, Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
All I can think of with this announcement is this:
NCAA - "We have a stunning announcement to make about March Madness."
NBA - "Hold my beer."

Honestly, these moves by the NCAA and NBA make me start to take this thing more seriously than anything else up to this point. That's not because I think they're experts in public health by any means. It's both organizations being willing to give up such a cash cow that gives me pause about the whole thing. We as a society are certainly taking this thing more seriously than anything I can remember.

There are a lot of people feeling this way....and I can't help but go
Why the **** are highly educated, world renowned, scientists who literally spend their entire lives studying **** like this just so easily ignored? Why the **** didn't Italy and China actually locking people down cause it go "Yeah, maybe it's not just the cold at this point" in peoples heads?
People have been so conditioned, over the past few years to decade, to not believe what they see or read from reputable sources. While at the same time most people's critical thinking skills have been on a curve approaching zero.
I don't get it.

We've created a society of talking heads where it is incredibly difficult to separate fact from opinion.
I largely have gotten to where I just tune out all the noise instead of trying to parse through it.

The thing that makes me take this more seriously is that Gobert, along with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, are in positions where they are probably have more ability to avoid getting the virus, but they got it anyway. My question is “how did they get the virus?” The announcements imply the virus is more widespread than previously thought.

So Gobert tests positive...means all of the Jazz players should get tested, plus their opponents, plus anyone who used the same plane they chartered......it's amazing how quickly this thing can spread.

Oh and then the families of those impacted because they come in close contact with them.

A second player for the Utah Jazz - Donovan Mitchell - has tested positive already.
All it takes is one patient zero in an area with the kind of contact like these professions make with other people for it to be spread almost instantly. Which is why suspending the season is the right move

Jazz star Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for the coronavirus, league sources tell ESPN. Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings. Now a Jazz teammate has tested positive.
Just shocking....*massive fart noise*

Many of those highly educated, world renowned scientists are not saying what you think they are saying. Most are more concerned with the reaction then the actual virus. They are also saying that the vast majority of those affected will only have minor symptoms and many who get it won't even know they have it since the symptoms are so minor.
The "reputable" sources you likely identify with, since you seem to be pretty young, are not seen as "reputable" since they are wrong about so many things and exaggerate often so they can get people like you, and many in your generation to panic which earns them a lot of money. For those of us who are older, remember H1N1 in 2009 and the lack of panic, and recall having measles, mumps and chicken pox as kids, all viruses with transmission rates that far exceed this virus, this is nothing more than a minor distraction from our daily lives.
By the way, here is a link to an expert who believes people like you, who are in a panic, are far scarier then anything he has seen.

So yesterday my highly educated wife starts talking about how NIH, the CDC and I think it was Stanford just announced research findings that this thing could survive in the air, so it's much worse than previously thought. She got it all from some inside sources at NIH and experts in the field with impeccable reputations. I told her the Chinese had published that weeks ago. She said I was wrong as all of these "trusted sources" we're just announcing this ground breaking research. When I then proceeded to tell her how long it could survive in air and on surfaces, she went to read more of the report. "How did you know all that? You must have read the recent findings somewhere before I mentioned it to you.". When I reaffirmed that I had heard it from the Chinese reporting when this thing started, she didn't want to talk about it anymore.

This is the truth.
Easy for the tens of millions Lebron has donated to go ignored. Easy to gloss over the school he set up to educate those in low SES areas for free. Easy to not realize just how much money, time, and effort the extreme majority of these athletes put into causes outside of their own pockets. For those without the same opportunities and advantages. The After-school All Stars program alone has gotten nearly $50,000,000 from Lebron. I hated "The Decision" as much as anyone - it still raised about 3 million dollars for the Boys and Girls Club. Lebron has it set up that any kid who attends his I Promise school will get full tuition paid for Akron and Kent State. All in all it's not out of the realm of reasonableness that Lebron has been directly responsible for a quarter billion dollars of charity work. That's just him. How much of it are you actually aware of?
Actually doing something people can't ignore and is extremely noticeable? Well, that can have an impact. You can't ignore it. As we can clearly see.
Let's also not pretend like these aren't also citizens of the US. Employees in the US. They are more than just basketball players. They are people too, and while money can help shield them and their family it doesn't make them immune to feeling the struggles elsewhere.
The shut-up-and-play crowd will be up in arms, but one reason movements like this are important is that too many people only place black athletes in the context of what they do on the court & don't care what happens when they, and other minorities, are racially abused away from it.
These are men, unified, making a sacrifice for the benefit of others. A generation dubbed entitled and self-centered. Yet here they are, standing up for others. That is worthy of praise.

Most native born american youth of color are -> supremely programmed <- and they have no semblance of strong leadership in their home environment, unfortunately.
I also noted the recent attempts by -> bcs handlers <- to create a differing, yet still false publicized and over-hyped propaganda to quell the smoldering emotional blaze: "what happens here changes the world. hook'em." lmmfao!!! xlolx Wuuuuuutttt duhhhhh. From what I'm hearing, they are saying Black Lives are not being protected the same as other Lives. That is not concise, it is a platitude. I am still trying to wrap my arms around the fact that more whites, by a margin of 2 to 1 and at a higher "incident" rate, are being killed by cops and we hear nothing, we also don't hear anything about the exponentially higher rate of black on white vs, white on black murder rates. Are they sitting out games because of that? I will begin to give a **** when all areas of "discussion" are discussed, until then, screw it, not interested. I am on the side of believing what they are telling me about their life experiences. What is misleading, the black on white vs white on black murder rate? You have a problem with that, talk to the feds and the crime stat people. The other, I will grant you, is tougher to quantify but you simply cannot look at a simple population demographic and then roll up a "killed by cop" stat and call it a day, it has to be tied to individual police interactions, by group, and then formulated.
So cognitive dissonance is OK by you, facts (maybe) be damned.

It's not just police shootings, they are saying there is excessive brutality and the criminal justice system needs reform.

It's not just police shootings, they are saying there is excessive brutality and the criminal justice system needs reform. That is more class related than racial but if a specific racial demographic occupies a larger segment of that "class" then, yea. What kind of criminal justice system reforms are you referring to? If we didn't have so many freaking criminals living and walking around in this country, maybe these public defender types would actually have time to work a case. Maybe try some personal responsibility and accountability, then you don't have to deal with the criminal justice system. I need facts on the excessive brutality, the easiest way to avoid systemic issues with the criminal justice system is to avoid the criminal justice system, works for me.

One man gets a couple years for having weed on him
another rapes a girl, gets found guilty, and does no jail time and walks free.Oh agree, but idiotic sentencing crosses racial lines and is heavily dependent on who your lawyer is and how much dough you have. There is absolutely a dual system of justice, and the fact that it hits the poor harder is true. And that does have a direct impact on AA's who may be more represented in those income tiers. But it isn't necessarily racial and there are a lot of reasons people are in economic straits and most of those reasons are not racial, they revolve around how you conduct yourself.

Its not misleading at all. Its fact and ruins the the prevailing false narratives. Im not denying anyones life experiences. Just dont manufacture a narrative to try and make them more valid.

We are never going to agree. There really isn't a stat that measures police brutality and criminal justice bias. Ahmaud Arberry would have just been another statistic in the criminal justice system, had it not been for the video. How many Ahmaud Arberry incidents are out there that were not on video, and the perps were not punished. We have the NBA players, MLB players, MLS and WNBA players saying there is stuff like that out there that doesn't make the news.

Link (https://www.epi.org/blog/black-white-wage-gaps-are-worse-today-than-in-2000/)
The black–white wage gap is smallest at the bottom of the wage distribution, where the minimum wage serves as a wage floor. The largest black–white wage gap as well as the one with the most growth since the Great Recession, is found at the top of the wage distribution, explained in part by the pulling away of top earners generally as well as continued occupational segregation, the disproportionate likelihood for white workers to occupy positions in the highest-wage professions.

[email protected] % of crimes committed by whites in this country is fair below the % of the population that is white, AA's commit crimes, as a % of total crimes committed, far in excess of their representation in the population, they should have a higher chance of being pulled over as they are probably committing violations at a higher rate than whites. Why is this so hard for you, if whites are 65% of the population but were accountable for 80% of all crime committed I would expect that they would be pulled over at a higher rate than other groups because of the frequency of the crimes committed, and I wouldn't blame it on racist patrols.

Do we know that Whites and African American's are caught committing crimes at the same rate? How many are arrested just because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. We do know the innocence project demographics. How many more are in prison for crimes they did not commit?

They didn't think that when the DoD paid the NFL tens of millions of dollars out of their PR/advertising/recruiting budget in 2009 and the mandate to be on the field for the national anthem was introduced or when the massive flags and over the top patriotic shows started before the game.
People don't realize that do they?
They don't realize that all the pomp and circumstance about "Murrica" that happens before each and every game is new. They don't realize it's literally a recruiting/advertising expense to the DoD to the tune of tens of millions of dollars to the NFL.
There was a joint oversight committee investigation to this done in 2015 by the government. The oversight committee used the phrase "paid patriotism" when describing what the money was being spent on, and found it included having teams standing on the field for the anthem.
That's right - US Tax Payer money went to the NFL for forced "paid patriotism"
But it wasn't an issue until it was a political thing that the old white guys didn't agree with.
