I haven't been to nearly enough to try to give an answer. I am partial to the somewhat rural campuses that are really college towns. Not a big fan of downtown or suburban campuses.

I think Richmond might just win this beauty contest, though Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, W&M and Fordham are all stunning as well

Here is a selection of images from UR.

First off is the Library, which overlooks Westhampton Lake
http://www.richmond.edu/visit/full_tour/buildings/boatlibr/images/hires/15.jpg

http://www.richmond.edu/visit/full_tour/buildings/boatlibr/images/hires/0.jpg

Now we move next door to Ryland Hall, one of the older academic buildings on campus.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/rylandha/images/hires/0.jpg

Here is Jepson Hall, home of the Leadership School
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/jephall/images/hires/0.jpg

Next door to Jepson Hall is the new Weinstein Hall for the Social Sciences
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/weinstei/images/hires/0.jpg

Next is the Tyler Hanyes Commons Building, which crosses over the Lake, connecting the two sides of the Campus, one of the more modern looking buildings on campus, but still ok...
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/commons/images/hires/0.jpg

http://www.richmond.edu/visit/full_tour/buildings/commons/images/hires/1.jpg

On the other side of the Lake is the recently renovated Gotwald Science Center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/gottwald/images/hires/0.jpg

Here is Cannon Memorial Chapel
http://www.richmond.edu/visit/full_tour/buildings/cachapel/images/hires/10.jpg

Here is the Modlin Art Center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/modlin/images/hires/1.jpg

Next door is the Booker Music center
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/bookerha/images/hires/0.jpg

Across Westhampton Green is North Court, one of the original buildings of Westhampton College, and still a dorm and classroom building. A good portion of the movie "Cry Wolf" was recently filmed here
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/north/images/hires/0.jpg

Behind North Court next to the Lake is the Greek Theater, great for concerts or just getting some sun.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/greekthe/images/hires/1.jpg

Back on the other side of Campus are the two Graduate Schools, first Robins School of Business.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/business/images/hires/0.jpg

And second Richmond Law.
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/lawschoo/images/hires/0.jpg

Sarah Burnett Hall, formerly the Refrectory but now the Admissions Office

Here are a few of the residence halls on the old Richmond College side of the Lake
http://www.urich.edu/visit/small_tour/buildings/freeman/images/hires/0.jpg

And Thomas Hall
http://www.richmond.edu/visit/full_tour/buildings/thomas/images/hires/0.jpg

brand new Whitehurst Hall, a sort of commons building for the old Richmond College side of campus, including the deanery.

I would have to reluctantly say Furman. I went to many sports camps there growing up and have been back several times since attending ASU. I've often thought if you could take Furman's campus and put it right in the middle of Boone, it would be the best campus in the country, period.

I've always liked how on their campus they manage to "hide" parking lots quite well, behind shrubbery, trees, etc.

Whenever I've been to games there (although the last time was when G-W was there a few years back), I always park way out over by the lake and walk through the campus to Paladin Stadium. Very nice.

I'm going to designate you an honorary Ram, bostonspider, for your efforts on behalf of Fordham. As you know (because I think I've said it before), I've been to Richmond and your campus is unbelievable.

Although there are probably campuses nicer than Fordham's, I sincerely doubt there is any truly urban campus that is as stunning (I don't consider Richmond "urban" even though it is on the outskirts of a city).

There is an old, urban feel to the Fordham campus. In fact, I'm told the Fordham campus today pretty much resembles what the Fordham area of the Bronx looked like during the mid-to-late 1800s: stately Gothic mansions and buildings surrounded by generous green lawns and slate streets. In fact, the Rose Hill Administration Building is the old Rose Hill Manor House, which was a personal residence for the owners of the expansive Rose Hill Manor. The owners of the Manor sold the property to the New York Archdiocese in the late 1830s and the university was establised a few years later. This is the Administration Building (you may recognize it as the building in Quiz Show in the scene where Charles Van Doren arrives in a limo to the Columbia campus):

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l83/JoltinJoe/250px-Fordham_University_Admin_Buil.jpg

The painter Walter Buble painted a stunning depiction of the Fordham campus at night during a winter storm. At night during an intense snowstorm, with the gray/white Gothan architecture of the campus, you really believe you are seeing the world in black and white.

I was in Richmond for a wedding this past Easter and drove through Richmond's campus. I was very impressed and didn't realize how hilly it was back in there. I bet it's nice in the fall with all the trees turning colors, and the lake where the student union's at was beautiful. They definitely beat out anything that I've seen by far.

Though I did get some looks when I was driving through with my "Back 2 Back National Champions" license tag on the front of the car. It was the weekend of their spring game too, what a coincidence. :D

The Ancient 8 Wins as a group. Amongst them all, Cornell is simply majestic -- and even a little overwhelming -- and in a great town (Ithaca), Princeton is right there, Harvard has the rep, ....

Among the land grant staties, UNH is a great -- if understated -- blend of campus and village (just skip the stadium). However, I am sure you could toss about 25-30 in a hat and come out with a winner.

Well, the Princeton folks seem to disagree. In 1999, the Princeton Review said the University of Delaware had, "absolutely the most gorgeous campus anywhere".

Since 1999, we've lost some of our majestic elm trees to disease, but the damaged ones have been replanted with the disease resistant elms and they are growing quickly.

Roselle has overseen the continued effort to make the campus even more beautiful as the majority of pathways have been bricked and the newest buildings on campus are as gorgeous as the older ones on the "green".

Personally, though, I'm partial to hills (which in our case are limited to north campus), so I'd have to vote for someone else.

The fountains at Furman have paid for themselves over and over again. The first time you round the corner and see the main entrance, it really can be breath taking. Especially at night.

For those of you who have seen Furman, you might find it interesting to know that the land on which today's campus sits was actually a huge cow pasture. It's strange to see photos before the campus was constructed, there isn't a tree in sight. It has been said that first building placed on the campus was a green house.

All that said, I have always been impressed with the natural setting around Boone and Cullowhee. I'm a sucker for mountains.

IMO, 'public Ivys' like UDel and W&M more than hold their own with Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc. Richmond is right there as well. Missed a shot to see Furman when the Hens visited in '88. I'll be visiting in '08, however.xthumbsupx Samford and JSU look lovely also.

and

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/a/ae/180px-Furman-Belltower2.jpg Bell Tower

A Spartanburg landmark since its construction between 1851 and 1854 "Old Main" was designed by the noted Charleston architect Edward C. Jones.

The original tower, erected in 1854 and located in downtown Greenville at the old men's campus

We didn't copy Wofford, we built a replica of our old campus tower on our new campus. If you look above, two articles suggest that the buildings were built at the same time. They may look the same but it could be a coincidence since the italian achitecture was popular at the time they were built.

While it pains me to say this, I must admit Lehigh is up there with the best of them......How about some pictures from a Mountain bird?

Thanks..and I wish I knew how to do it..I have a 'coffee table' book called On Being Lehighthat is a gorgeous collection of photos around the campus in different seasons, as well as the spectacular views from the top of Old South Mountain where you can see up into the Pocono Mts. The alternative would be to visit the website at www.lehigh.edu and take the tour. Campus changes elevation about 800 feet from entrance to research labs, though main academic campus changes about 400 feet.

Obviously this is a subjective thing, but Furman has to be on the short list of best campuses. The only thing others have on us is the really old buildings, since we moved to our new campus in the '50's.

Of the other campuses I have seen, UR was nice, although I must have caught it on a bad day, because those pictures look nicer than I remember. William in Mary is beautiful as well, especially for a history nut like myself. I really like the gothic architecture at Duke(similar to Princeton), but I'm not a fan of the way the campus is so spread out. Chapel Hill is quite nice as well, and I envy the college town they have there with Franklin street and all. That's the main thing I wish we had at FU, which is kind of isolated from the city of Greenville.

This is what's impressive of Lehigh's Asa Packer Campus (academic) with the stone 'castle-like' buildings with spires, steeples and turrets. In fact the architect of many of Duke's residential dorms is the same of Lehigh's Drinker, Dravo, and Richards. Amongst ".a grove of spreading chestnuts, walls in ivy dress..."

The Princeton Review rates universities which is why they were relevant. As an alumnus I am partial, but UD has a tremendous campus which is on par with some of the more well known ones mentioned here (on the east coast at least). It pays to be in a small state where a mega rich family decided to endow your state college back in the day when rich folk actually donated a good bit to their favorite cause... ;)

Cornell??? Majestic??? What part of the campus have you visited? Aside from the original part it is flat out hideous. In fact, there is one entrance that I have often commented reminds me of 1980s East Berlin with a checkpoint, run down modernist buildings and ugly powerlines everywhere! Ugh!!!!!!!

I have to disagree with numbers 4 and 5. Am I biased? Well, yeah.

The three schools I've spent the most time at are Furman, Coastal, and Wofford (attend Furman, work the summers at Coastal, and live in Spartanburg). Wofford isn't even the prettiest school in Spartanburg, I'm afraid (that would go to Converse College, the all-women's school that Wofford guys raid for dates). Wofford kind of looks like the lower-quality, generic brand of Furman. There are some corners of the school that need some help. The concrete-slab of a football stadium doesn't help, though the area around the football stadium overall is a decent atmosphere (aesthetically, not football-wise).

SInce I mentioned it, I should throw in that Coastal has a surprisingly nice-looking campus for its area. I was expecting it to be a tree-less wasteland (Charleston Southern, anyone?), but it actually has some shade.

The Library was "finished and open" for Graduation this past month, it definately looked good. I'm still not 100% on the Ho Center just yet, mostly because the only thing I've seen is the massive construction job. I realize space is a premium up there, but the placement just looks, well, awkward.

I really think to be fair you have to divide up the types of campus.
I think Furman is beautiful. But at the same time it really doesn't compare to many older campuses.
Also, typically schools with very large student populations have a difficult time competing with smaller schools. Once you start building high rises it is tough to look "pretty".

Most larger schools have certain sections that look really good and areas that look like small cities.

No. It's on campus. You just can't see it in those picks cause it's down a little farther. It's on the far end of campus kinda far away from things.

I think for an urban campus Northeastern is quite nice, it has won a fair share of awards for an urban campus! To answer the questions before they come, yes NU is within the city limits of Boston. No, the stadium is not on campus, and it is not that close (we are in fact closer to Fenway)

NU is pretty classy in many ways. Matthews Arena is the coolest place on campus. Hockey games in there are like a time warp. Proves that "old" doesn't mean "outdated". And, yes for you naysayers, I've been to the Whitt, Agganis Arena, ..... many times.

ASU's campus is very new with a lot of construction taking place over the last 10-15 years. Every opinion is subjective and depends on what one is looking for in a campus. While you may think the ASU campus does not come up to Richmond's, what you can not compare are the surrounding areas.

Here's more of Northeastern. Like NU Hound 29 stated - for a city school NU is regarded as having one of the nicest urban campuses in the country.

The West Village Apartment offer some unbelieveable views of downtown Boston if you're lucky enough to live on a high floor.

FWIW, the 5 best campus I've ever been on are ...

1) Stanford University - Just a beautiful campus w/ the Spaniard style buildings.
2) Princeton University - Feels like the epitomy of an Ivy Campus.
3) Harvard University - Historic, classic buildings.
4) University of Washington - Very picturesque campus.
5) Fordham University - Maybe cuz i live near by, but it's truly a beautiful campus.

where are the shacks?

Time to put a common misconception to rest. Unlike West Virginia, the vast majority of the Boone area is an extremely affluent and costly place to live. The number of people living under the poverty level is 9.1% and that number is mostly comprised of native born elderly people living on social security. In the 70's one would see a lot of poverty in the area, but today you are more likely to see million dollar homes and outrageous real estate prices than people living in shacks. Just check some of the Boone area real estate offices and the prices homes & property are going for these days.

I can't believe only one person has mentioned Elon's campus! It should surely be in most people's top 5! Here's how mine would shape up;

1. Richmond
2. Princeton
3. Furman
4. Fordham
5. Elon

I haven't really posted on this thread but I did think of Elon and mentally noted its conspicuous absence. I was really impressed when I toured there back in my pre-college days, probably is even nicer now.

I've been to a good number of campuses and while only a handful are really spectacular, most have some things going for them. Some schools are clearly held back by budget.

Fordham is nice and all, but if you step 10 feet off of the campus grounds you are in one of the most dangerous areas in the Bronx.

Ten feet in which direction?
To the north, and literally across the street from Fordham's campus, is the 250-acre New York Botanical Garden, one of the leading botany center's of the world and home to the nation's largest Victorian glasshouse (see photo below).
Across the street from campus, to the east, is the 265-acre Bronx Zoo, the nation's largest urban zoo.
Adjacent to the south side of campus is the Belmont neighborhood (aka Little Italy of the Bronx), known for its fine Italian restaurants.
To the west...well, the original Lantern bar closed long ago, so there's no reason to go in that direction anymore. Actually, five blocks west of Fordham's campus is Poe Park, home to Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, the poet and author's final home.

RamMan,

Thanks for clearing that terrible post by "EmoryZach" about the outside of Fordham's campus. I live near the Botanical Garden side of Fordham and you're right about the neighborhoods around the university.

Most urban campuses if you "stray too far" you'll wind up in a neighborhoods that surburbanites aren't accustomed too.

Being an MSU alumni, I am proud of my school and its heritage, tradition etc. Our campus isn't bad, but it isn't great. It is certainly in a nice valley that offers alot no matter what time of the year it is. But between the two Montana schools, UM does have the nicer campus. Their facilities are better, their campus is better laid out, more trees etc. I like Bozeman better than Mizzoula, but UM wins for best Montana campus.xrotatehx

Belmont Avenue, a block over, also claims a place in the history of popular music as the place where doo-wop became famous. Long before he became famous, local boy Dion DiMucci, backed by his friends, used to serenade the pedestrians with their acappella renditons of popular songs. Later Dion hooked up with the "Belmonts" and went on to become a rock 'n roll Hall of Famer.

Even today, if you go into any one of the many Italian delis along Arthur Avenue or its environs, you will inevitably find the autographed glossy 8x10 of Dion.

http://www.singers.com/doowop/doowopimages/BelmontsCigars200.gif
Acappella is the spelling of the classical a cappella when it refers to doo-wop and later to rock 'n roll. It evolved in the late '40s and by the late fifties had emerged into popular culture from the street corners, hallways, alleys and bathrooms where great echoes could be heard. The practitioners usually presented themselves to producers as acappella groups and then were relegated to background singing and stepped on by instrumentation. The Belmonts were named for Belmont Avenue in the Bronx, their hometown. Joining Dion in 1957 to create "I Wonder Why" which went to #22, they continued as Dion And The Belmonts until 1960 when Dion went solo. In that collaborative period they had two #5 hits, "Where Or When" and the cloying "Teenager In Love." After Dion's departure they had a couple of minor hits in the early '60s but had to wait to create this legacy to doo-wop music until 1972. It is, indubitably, a masterpiece.

Rent "A Bronx Tale" and "The Wanderers." That will have to do. xnodx

Honestly, I've enjoyed Belmont far more as an alumnus than I ever did as a student simply because the best restaurants were generally beyond a student's budget -- except for certain rare occasions. On the other hand, I really looked forward to making suggestions to mom and dad as to where we should go to eat whenever they visitied. Of course, they were paying!

Great stuff.

I went to the Junior High School off of Fordham Road right next to the White Castle!

There is certainly a big misconception about the neighborhoods around Fordham.

I dunno if its already been mentioned because I can't read thru 17 pages of posts...but I'd say Elon is pretty Amazing. It looks like a country club, and i'm fairly sure they spend about 97% of the 31 grand a year on landscaping and fountains.

I attended their graduation ceremony last year with a friend. "Under the Oaks" (or whatever they call it) was a beautiful setting for commencement. They just set up a bunch of chairs and a stage outside, under an oak grove (duh) and have it right there.

Just came across this thread, thought I'd offer my opinion. In no particular order... Colgate, Richmond, Furman, Samford, Bucknell, Delaware, Wofford, William & Mary, and Montana. Sewanee's is awesome too... 10,000 acres of wilderness, even though they aren't FCS.

Definitely some beautiful campuses out there. I think that Elon's campus is overrated, personally (It's still nice though!). Before you get bent out of shape, Elon fans, I must say that ASU's campus itself isn't the nicest (building color and design and such isn't to my liking), but any university would be hard pressed to find a better area to surround a campus than Boone. Out of only the pictures on this thread, Fordham and Colgate strike me as the prettiest.

Haven't seen many campuses, but I do think both Appalachian State and Furman have pretty campuses. I'm sort of a homer for mountain scenery.

The nicest one I've been to is probably Cornell. The campus is enormous, and you can't beat the waterfalls. Here are some photos from when I went to Ithaca:

SHSU will be one of the nicest colleges in our conference and our system.

Just as soon as we finish all the construction! In the past few years we've added a dining hall, 3 residence halls, 4 classroom buildings, an expansion to the HKC, clock tower....annnd right now we're finishing up an expanded mall area and working on Academic Building Five which will be the largest building on campus.

It's kinda hard to navigate campus at the moment, but once the mall's done we'll have the nicest campus in our system and in our confererence. Just pardon our dust at the moment. Can't be the fastest growing school in Texas without all these new buildings!

Yeah but isn't the campus under two feet of snow four months out of the year? ;)

True, but i think if you go by the area, Western wins for pretty hands down over Boone. But you're right, how do you compete with a mountain view? Back in the 1980s, I thought App had a beautiful campus. But that sacrificed a lot of that to put all the new buildings in. But the view up around App Heights is still great.

Obviously, i'm a bit skewed, but once our new arena is complete (which sticks to our georgian colonial design) it will be the largest building on campus and I think it will significantly enhance the overall campus to rival or surpass furman and the other well known places.
As for boone, i've visted one of my best friends at that campus several times and it's a nice college town with great people. The surrounding parks and waterfalls are nice, but the actual college buildings, with the exception of the arena, didn't seem to different from the general state college design.

That's why I didn't want to go there. Way too cold and out in the middle of nowhere.

In no particular order: Furman, any Ivy League school (I kind of like Dartmouth), Jacksonville State and Montana State.
