RENO, Nev. -- The Golden Baseball League settled on punishment Friday for a public address announcer who was ejected from a minor league game for inciting criticism of an umpire: spending an inning in the ump's shoes.

Mike Murray, the announcer for the independent league's Reno Silver Sox, was ejected Thursday night between the seventh and eighth innings of Reno's 6-5 loss to the Chico Outlaws at Peccole Park.

Home plate umpire Tyler Ramsey tossed him and ordered the P.A. system shut down after Murray played a sound bite of a Bob Uecker line from the 1989 movie "Major League" -- "Personally, I think we got hosed on that call" -- following a close call against the home team at first base.

Not even Single-A ball, can everyone just relax a little?

That happened with my hometown Single-A team a few years back. I don't think it was a sound clip, though. I believe the announcer said something like "let's let the ump know how we feel about that call, folks," or something like that. He got tossed, and, as I recall, suspended for a while.

last thing baseball needs is the fun police. people already aren't intertested. xsmhx

I don't know about it being the 'fun' police. Directly challenging or questioning the umpires, or any referees, is not really called for over the PA system. There is enough poor sportsmanship being displayed by many fans already, they don't need any encouragement.

This coming from someone who once helped his schools pep band earn a technical foul for playing "Three blind mice" during a HS basketball game. But we were young and dumb, and not being paid to be there.

If I owned the team I would suspend him too. While the PA announcer is expected, to some extent, to favor the home team, he is also expected to refrain from negative behavior and comments toward the visiting team and umpires.

The issue is not whether or not it was fun, but the fact that it was very unprofessional. Sorry... Mr. PA man, "You're outta here!" xnodx

Classic! Definately rep points for that!
