You pin them deep there.....but whatever. Give JMU another short ****ing field.

If you're going to go for it, throw the play out there that they do not see coming. Bad call.

Seems like if you want to go for it, see if you can run a freeze play, and draw JMU off. If not, call a TO and set up a play.

Overall, I think the difference was NDSU's coaching staff. I was not impressed with Cignetti at all. JMU is right there with NDSU in terms of overall talent at this level but they seem to choke or shoot themselves in the foot at the worst possible time.

This game definitely felt like a NE Super Bowl win. The Bison simply did the little things better and made key plays in all 3 phases while their opponent did not....

Good game NDSU. You all outplayed and outcoached us.

Perhaps its sour grapes against Cignetti but I sincerely hope he decides to move to greener pastures ASAP. I am afraid we will end up with Mickey Matthews 2.0, a overly conservative coach too old to move on to a new team (that will be the case if he stays more than 3 years) that will get us to the playoffs but lacks the bravado to win important games. Honestly, short of an amazing transfer QB, I don't see us beating NDSU for the next 2-3 years so I'm just hoping that nightmare scenario doesn't happen.

Don't agree. NDSU looked like the best talent after graduating almost every starter last year. They came out with sub par coaching. I mean first year coaches all around. The OC has disappointed in the playoffs. Completely closed the playbook. The fact that NDSU's coaches think they can play super conservative and still won the championship with an extremely young team is an ominous sign for the rest of the FCS.

Some trick plays opened the game. You should look at some of the play calling Mess had. Heck I still remember that game against Richmond with textbook usage of WCO and the short passing game. I guess I am not a fan of playing not to lose.

Although, NDSU has good to great coaching it's no longer elite. This game just proves momentum in college ball gives you enough talent to overcome occasional questionable coaching. Same with Alabama and Clemson.

Congrats to the Bison. JMU was a really good team. JMU played great in 2nd half and just like the ISU game, NDSU went conservative, not wanting to make mistakes with the lead. Some Bison fans don’t want to give their O coaches much credit but there is a reason their QB had no interceptions. Was about as much drama as you can generate from a team needing a touchdown, a 2 point conversion and then would need to figure out a way To win in OT. Great finish to the season. Looking forward to next year’s MVFC gauntlet. How about a MVFC- CAA weekend to solve out-of-conference scheduling 🤷🏻, would be great to see some of the teams during regular season.

Actually I think it was a decent called game. TL had openings and took them. RBs didn't have a lot of room to run. Passing when needed. Great? No, but overall not bad.

Agree with you. NDSU’s best plays all day were Lance running the ball and deep throws to pick up pass interferences. JMU defense did a pretty decent job bottling up the other stuff.

Question: how many yards did the other running backs have collectively compared to Lance?

You guys had a great year and a lot to be proud of honestly. Fantastic JMU team that had a lot of desire and heart. But honestly, there is no QB in the country that will get you there in the next 2-3 years. The gap is going to be very large between NDSU and JMU next several years. I do believe JMU will continue to be a top 2/3 team in the nation year over year.

Perhaps that is the case, I just know with the current roster of QB's, I wouldn't give us a snowballs chance in hell for the next 2-3 years. I see us being a top 8 team next year, and a top 2-3 team the year or two after given what we bring back/our recruiting.

PS, it looks like you have a signature to update....

The clock management by JMU at the end was inexcusable, I still dont understand how you let the clock just tick away when you have timeouts.
Well Entz's clock management the last 2 minutes of the first half was every bit as bad.

Ertz and the coaching staff, came up with a near perfect game plan on offense. They knew challenging that amazing JMU D in conventional ways wasn’t going to work, they were ready for all the power running game stuff with our rb’s.

They designed great runs for Lance and took some deep shots to try to loosen things up.

The fake FG, which was the difference in the game was pure balls.

Plus he had the gall (balls) to go for it on the fake field goal. You have to look at the body of coaching during the game and realize Entz overall made the right decisions for his team. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Cignetti when you consider the perplexing 3rd and long runs, the strange third string QB as a wildcat package, and the bad clock management. You can't overcome a team as fundamentally solid as NDSU and a generational talent like Trey Lance, considering all those things.

You are being overly hard on a coach that made the NC. Both sides made some poor decisions. When seasoned NC winning coaches go to the FBS, you get coaches that need time. For NDSU that coaching tree has now thinned out a bit with Bohl and Klieman taking some coaches. Even the Sith Lord of the Patriots took in an assistant from NDSU 2 years ago. There are plenty of NDSU fans that think that the NDSU coaches underwhelmed today.

We returned approximately 20 of 22 starters, have the largest football budget in FCS, and have among the best fan support in the FCS. Anything less than getting here would have been a huge disappointment. I'm not saying just anyone could have gotten us here as that is clearly not the case; Cignetti is no doubt a top 10 FCS coach. I just know that given the current state of the FCS, its currently NDSU vs everyone else. Being conservative when you have a extremely talented team will work against a UNI or Weber State team but not against NDSU. A coach that doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to throw the ball on third and long against NDSU or have the awareness that NDSU will take risks (did they not watch the game tape of the NDSU vs. SDSU game??) is problematic.

So Denucci says they "just kind of ran out of time there" ?? Uh ... what about the bad pass/pick you threw dude when you had another play coming ???

That was much worse than Spack's similar comment in 2014 because 1) Spack didn't throw the pick at the end (more of a strip than a pick), and 2) he made the mistake of telling the press what he had just told his team simply because he was playing the part of proud poppa. Sometimes he just talks too much and doesn't have a good enough filter.

But Denucci threw the pick and could have had another play ????

We didn't out play you, your coach lost his mind in the last 7 seconds, we had no answer for your running game , could of ran the ball at least twice with the time outs you had but chose to throw an out at the goal. You players got cheated. JMU is clearly the best team we played this year and the two best teams in the country at this level where in the finals, as it should be.

Awesome game. I think both coaching staff's made some real odd decisions. Glad NDSU came away with the win.Agree, very odd on both sides, we completely abandoned any type of short passing routes and JMU was jamming the ball down our throats running it and seemed to quit doing that. Our RB's we completely taken out of the game plan, weird game really.

3. 2016 NC vs. Youngstown St.
4. 1982 vs. Virginia

[QUOTE=Derby City Duke;2851536]Top 5 wins in JMU history:

1. 2010 #13 Virginia Tech
2. 2004 NC vs. Montana
3. 2016 NC vs. Youngstown St.
4. 1982 vs. Virginia
5. 2008 vs. Appalachian State
6. 2016 vs. North Dakota State

One fan's opinion and I've been watching JMU football for 40 seasons. Not disputing the win wasn't big, because of when it occurred, but certainly not the biggest win in our relatively short (1974 - 2019; we played JV schedules in 1972 and 1973) football history.[/QUOTE

I find it hard to believe that JMU fans view the VA Tech win as "bigger" than NDSU at the Fargo Dome in the semi-finals, leading to a Championship. The Tech game was significantly diminished when the Dukes lost 5 of their next 6 games against CAA opponents and finished with a losing conference record and no playoff appearance. I get the 2004 win over Montana, but I viewed your win over YSU for the NC the same way I look at 1980 USA Hockey's Gold medal win over Finland after defeating the USSR in the "Miracle on Ice".

Based on who I think ran the 'poll' you may talking about, they suffer from recency bias ('17 JMU grads). I have a longer and broader view of the world and life. I think my list is probably closer to the truth amongst those of us who have been around for awhile.

But hey, if your opinion makes you feel good, then have at it. Just don't ascribe as fact about a fanbase writ large what comes from some random poll.
So that JMU class ranked NDSU '16 higher than YSU '16 because... recency bias?

Trey's performance today reminded me a bit of Vince Young in the Rose Bowl against USC. Kid is an athlete!

I remember that game, I think the UCS quarterback got the Heisman, but Vince Young and UT won the national championship that year. Vince Young got robbed that year like Easton did last year with the Payton.

I am not kidding, if there would have been a film crew on that run, it would have been the greatest documentary of all time. We had a guy ordering drinks for his own penis in Munich, ND, and his penis was drinking the drink. Got kicked out of there for life, sleep in the car someplace, drove around, I don't know, didn't change clothes for 3 days, it was the stuff of legends. I remember drinking in Devils Lake and it was Monday morning, had no idea what day it was.

Reggie Bush won the Heisman in 2005. He was one of the most ridiculous college players I've ever seen. With that said, he did return the award due to the whole family house fiasco.

I’ve literally never heard anyone talk about how great the YSU game was. Even though it was a the NC, it was a let down compared to what transpired beforehand. I get that the 2016 win may not be the greatest ever in your history, but I seriously doubt anyone who puts YSU above the NDSU win....

Not really, since the discussion is about biggest wins, not best seasons. VT was an ACC team ranked #13 in the country. Even Mickey Matthews said it was bigger than the ‘04 N.C. game.

I Stand by my list but will accept that we’ll have a difference of opinion on this matter.

Unfortunately this game was over when NDSU went us 14-7. I said to the people I was with that JMUs body language changed after NDSU score that TD. I am not sure if it was: we are losing what do we do now or we are down and I don't know what to do to come back. Their body language went from shoulders up high to I am dragging on the ground. When NDSU faked the field goal and ran it in for a TD I said, I think I heard a snap. As a coach, I know that when a team feels defeated it is almost impossible to turn things around. When JMU missed the field goal I said I heard people getting sick. I know JMU came back in the second half and made it a very good game but the first half feelings made things so bad that it was going to take a miracle for them to come back. To be frank, even the final drive, I had no fear of the game being tied. Knowing NDSU, I just felt it was going to be NDSU that was going to make the difference. After the 14-7 score I just felt JMU felt they were in over their heads. 28-20 makes it a good score and the fact that they drove the ball to the 3 yard line made it very interesting, but knowing NDSU, I really felt they were going to make the play.

I'm curious how JMU can talk about them being a dynasty. Maybe in the CAA they are but in looking at it, in the last 10 years they have been the FCS championship game three times and are 1-2 while NDSU has been there 8 times and won 8 titles. What is considered a dynasty?
