For Brian Stokes, everyday is Memorial Day.
A survivor of two tours of duty in Iraq, Stokes remembers his war experiences daily.
“I think about Iraq all of the time,” said Stokes, a former Appalachian State football player, who will finish up his degree in Criminal Justice this December. “You can’t help but have thoughts of it.”
But while there are constant reminders of his service as a U.S. Marine sergeant, from the nightmares he experiences on occasional nights, to the hearing loss he has in his right ear — the remnant of a roadside bomb in Falluja and far too many fire fights in the streets of Iraq — Stokes views Memorial Day as something extra special.
