My first UNI game was in 1989 at the age of 7.

The first one I really remember was in the early 90s for homecoming vs Illinois State.

My very first game was Coastal's very first game - 2003, home vs. Newberry. The goalposts came down. xthumbsupx

I think that was the most electric atmosphere I've ever felt - even rivaling the JMU game of 2005.

My first I-AA/FCS game was when Cal Poly moved up to I-AA in 1994 against D-II Humbolt State. Cal Poly lost 19-23. My first all I-AA game was Cal Poly against St Mary's also in 1994. 34-24 CP.

My first Cal Poly game was Sept 22, 1951 against Sul Ross State from Texas. Cal Poly lost 24-47. I was 9 years old.

My first UC Davis game (and FCS for that matter) was our 2004 home opener against South Dakota State. I drove up with one of my friends and watched us pummel the Bunnies 52-0. That was a great way to start it all off.

That would have not been a 1-aa or FCS game because the SoCon wasn't reclassified until 1983.

Technically, the only people that have seen a FCS game were those fans who attended playoff games last season.

My First FCS game was October of last year, when ASU beat Furman (Semantics, I know, but it was a very good game).

I saw plenty of I-AA games before that, dating back to when I was 7 or 8 years old. My family has been in the Foothills of the NC High Country for 5 or 6 generations, and three of those generations have sent students to ASTC/ASU.

I wish I could specifically remember the date of my first game and the opponent. If I had to narrow it down, I'd say it was probably 9/13/1986, (ASU 40, ETSU 14), 9/20/1986 (ASU 33, Citadel 10), I'm pretty sure I was at the 1988 ASU-ETSU game (ASU won 51-3), because the things my 9 year-old brain chose to remember were, (1) the opposing team was nicknamed the pirates, (2) Either they (ETSU) are the worst team ever, or we're (ASU) the best, and (3) those cheerleaders sure have to do a lot of pushups at a 51-3 victory.

My first game was back in '93 when the Griz hosted then D-II South Dakota State. Back then you could just walk up to the ticket window and get a general admission ticket before most games and the stadium was about half its current capacity. As far as I know the game was Dave Dickenson's first start at QB, which for the first 3 quarters did not go very well. At the start of the 4th quarter, SDSU was leading 31-7 and many Griz fans were making their way to the exits. My family decided to stay to the end, and were rewarded by witnessing a massive scoring barrage. When the dust settled, the Griz emerged with a 52-48 victory.

First game of which I knew a I-AA team was playing (because honestly I didn't even know there was I-AA at that time, I thought Division I was all the same) was Morgan State at JMU in 1995. I think the score was 76-7 in favor of JMU. So that's not a 'real' game IMO, nothing to get all excited about I-AA for.

Thus, it would have to be JMU @ Mary & Bill. JMU won 24-17. xnodx

I'd really be guessing because I went to a lot of UD games in the 70's before I-AA... by the time the Hens joined I-AA (1980) I didn't go to as many games because my siblings were all gone from home and I played hockey all fall... and then of course in 1985 I started going all the time when I was in school there. UC Davis v. Sacramento State at Hughes Stadium, 1980. My first game as an Aggie Bandsman; we high-stepped around the field and into the endzone, turned left and did our pre-game show. It was 105 degrees, we wore wool uniforms and stood on the sunny side of the stadium; we lost two of our eighty to heat prostration.

And we won the game. Part of the 17 year win streak against the Hornets. I can't remember...was Ken O'Brien the quarterback that day?

Looking at old schedules, my first UNH game would have been in 1968 vs. Dartmouth which obviously pre-dates I-AA. Pretty sure UNH went I-AA in 1978 and it's difficult to pinpoint the true FCS vs. FCS game that I might have attended that year. The early season 1978 games that I probably attended would have been against a I-A in Holy Cross (at that time) and a D-II in West Chester. Mine probably was either UConn (I-AA at that time) or UMass.

My first college football game was my freshman year at App, 1978 and we beat Wofford 35-14 to open the season.

My first I-AA would have probably been 1982 when App beat Citadel 48-22in Boone. Sometimes seems like not much has changed, then I remember those two trophies. I remember geing upset when the SoCon was forced down to I-AA. It probably made sense for most of the members, but I think in ASU's case it stunted our growth and we didn't progress the way we could have with the right leadership. I think finally the leadership in place to take our program to the next level.

UNC vs. Furman in Chapel Hill, I think sometime in the late 70's. I also attended a couple App State games as a kid when we would go up to Boone to a cabin we have in Valle Crucis.

Also, I went to the NAIA national championship game back in the late 70's or early 80's when Elon played against some team from PA. Not FCS, but they are FCS now.

I attended the 1980 NAIA National Championship game. The Fighting Christians beat Northwestern State (Oaklahoma) for the title. Man, it was cold that day!

True, very true. That was actually the 1st game ever I can remember and it was agaist Appy.

The first that sticks in brain, when my Pop took me to El Cid games, was the one at Furman when the pound puppies won the SoCon Championship. That place went crazy!

Those Cadets get quite excited when the Dogs put up a win because it means the student body gets a little extra leave time for the weekend. I imagine they got the entire weekend off for winning the champioship.

My uncle used to be a football coach up at ASU, and growing up we always made a trip to Boone to see a game every year. I'm not sure what my first game was, but it must of been sometime in the early-mid '90's. I probably would have considered myself an App fan back then, before I knew any better:p .

My first game at Paladin Stadium was the JMU game in the 2004 Quarterfinals, while visiting campus as a high school senior. As disappointing as that game was, it got me hooked on FU football. I ended up coming to Furman the next fall and haven't missed a home game since.

First FCS game or half of one was Fresno St. vs Montana, Fresno St. won 52-37. Montana played well. It was in the early 90's. First ever game was Fresno St. vs Louisiana Tech in 1985. Fresno won 34-10. La Tech had just moved from I-AA a year or two before.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it was the 1983 championship game between Western Carolina and Southern Illinois. I would have been 9 at that game. I might have been to a game or two before that, but I don't remember. Whatever it was, it would have been a Western Carolina game.

my first game was when i was five years old. Cat/Griz, griz win. It was a beautiful day for Nov. and the griz were clicking. I remember being young i didn't really know who to cheer for, but my entire family sans my mother are griz so the choice was made for me. Between my pops and I we havent missed a home game since 1994 xnodx

My first game was sometime during the season of 1995. I don't remember who it was, but I do remember that I went to Cat-Griz that year in Bozeman. I was more interested in things other than the game, but I remember everyone being disappointed when we lost that game.

But at least I can say that I've seen an MSU win against UM in Bobcat Stadium. Some people aren't so lucky.

mine was one od the biggest "uspets" in FCS history..in my opinion

2003
NAU v McNeese 1st round of the playoffs. McNeese is ranked number one in the country with its only loss coming from FBS Kansas State (the year they won the Big 12). NAU comes into McNeese and beats the mess out of them in "the swamp" 35-3 with then true frosh Jason Murrietta ( i think we have heard of him before...). Jason goes nuts and throws 5 TD passes as NAU rolls. Classic!

Anyone else remember that one?

Mine was an incredibly exciting, come from behind, see-saw victory over App St. in 1982 ( 39-35). At that point in JMUs brief football history, that was arguably our biggest win ever. We were D-III as recently as 1979. The games claim as our " biggest win ever" lasted all of ONE week as JMU went down to Charlottesville the following week and upset UVA 21-17.

1994. Montana vs. McNeese State.

First round playoffs in a blizzard at Washington-Grizzly Stadium where it was so loud your chest was vibrating.

Andy Larson connects on a last second FG after an incredible drive to give the GRIZ a 30-28 win.

Did celebratory snow angels in the old grass endzones at WGS and have been hooked ever since.

Wasn't FCS then, or even 1AA, but I watched Jan Stenerud kick his 59 yarder, which was a collegiate record for many years. Also watched Don Hass rush for over 300 on one game!! I was about 6 or 7 at the time.

Technically, no one's first true FCS game occurred before the 2006 National Championship game because that's when the name change from I-AA to FCS took place.

I was watching teams that are now FCS back in the 1970s, schools like Idaho, Montana State and Cal Poly used to play at Fresno State with regularity. Before that, I was listening to the games on the radio on Saturday nights as far back as the 1960s. Fresno State played all sorts of teams from the Big Sky and other places back in the day, Nevada, Boise State, McNeese State. Our only meeting with Montana came in 1989, surprisingly.

My first game with two I-AA teams came Sept. 4, 1993, when North Carolina A&T hosted Appalachian State. I remember driving down to Greensboro in a heavy rain storm and the game was played in the rain and mud at Aggie Stadium. It was one of the worst performances I would ever see by an ASU team. They lost 22-10. But it was the debut on a freshman LB named Dexter Coakley, who was all over the place. It was also the first start and a dreadful one at that by a quarterback named Scott Satterfield, who was forced into the lineup when Matt Stevens broke Andy Arnold's collarbone in the final scrimmage of camp. ASU went on to lose at home the next weekend to Liberty, 20-14, when a cornerback named Will Robinson was burned for a long TD pass late. We started calling him "Warning, Warning, Danger, Danger" Will Robinson, after the character in Lost In Space. The Mountaineers lost four games in a row before Satterfield dug himself out of the dog house and replaced an injured freshman Gerard Hardy to turn a 16-0 third-quarter deficit into a 20-16 victory over East Tennessee State. The Mountaineers lost three more in a row to fall to 1-7 before closing out Jerry Moore's only losing season with three wins for a 4-7 record. That was my full-fledged introduction to I-AA/FCS.

I know I'm looking forward to visiting the Ivies and PL schools some day.

It's not just the PL and Ivy - great campuses, history, tradition and game-day atmospheres at so many FCS schools, from Delaware to Citadel, from William & Mary to Maine. If i'm in an FCS town, I always try to visit the campus and stadium. They all have a lot to offer.

Mine was in 1982 when my brothers were freshmen at FU. I was 12, we went up on parent's weekend and saw FU pound Davidson I believe 63-14 or something similar (perhaps a true 'Din fan can find a boxscore?).

Three things stuck out that day in '82:

1. Sitting way up high on the home side, the scenic view, thinking what a cool setting for college football.

2. Even in my youth, realizing what a master Dick Sheridan was, and how he could work magic at a higher level.

3. Furman co-eds in tight mini-skirts.....yummy!xbowx

McNeese went to the Independance Bowl that year and beat Tulsa.

It wasn't my first game by far, but I remember watching McNeese playing USL in front of a large crowd that year. I don't remember the score, but we did win and went on to the Independance Bowl as McTailGator stated. I do remember that crowd being very, very loud! xnodx

Well, since several people have pointed out that the change to FCS wasn't until during the playoffs last year I haven't been to one yet:(

As far as 1-AA goes, my first was whenever and against whoever GSU played it's first. I don't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up.
