Football recruits bring impressive resumes

Team captain. All-conference. Team MVP. Multisport athlete. National Honor Society member.

No, those words don't describe just one of the University of Dayton football team's 2007 recruits. They describe nearly all 24 of them.

"Half of them are National Honor Society," UD coach Mike Kelly said. "And 16 of 24 were captains.

"I like to have captains. They understand leadership and roles and things that maybe you don't have to coach."

The Flyers-to-be also have impressive football credentials. The offensive linemen, including the captain of Division I state champ Hilliard Davidson, Blake Saul, average 6-foot-1, 266 pounds.

Kelly rarely counts on freshmen contributing, but he said linebackers Matt Riddle and Ross Fumagalli, and running backs Justin Millio and Andrew Zapinski could be in the mix.

Sidney linebacker Devon Langhorst and lineman Justin Griffis, Carroll lineman Dan Prindle and Northmont punter/kicker Kenton Froebe give the class some local flavor.

There are 14 Ohio players and 10 more from five other states, including five from Illinois.

"We've been working the Chicago area the last couple years," Kelly said. "Dayton is a good name in Chicago. There's a lot of quality high schools. It's not too far from home, but it's far enough away from home."

There are a couple familial connections. Defensive back Alex Johnston's father played at UD in the early 1970s, while Fumagalli's older brother, Drew, is a current Flyer.
