They would be fools. To manage the Yankees one must not be a baseball guru (just how hard is it to pencil in 9 all stars every night), but he is a great arbitrator of personalities, not the least of which is the owner.

If there is a finger to point in all of this it is at the general manager and owner. Their shopping sprees have finally left their minor league system bare and all that remains is an aging team with absolutely no pitching.

cashman is not at all to blame, he has been a strong proponent of harvesting young talent, but King George has been trying to buy a dynasty. Unfortunately with the slew of injuries they have not had the luxury of nurturing the talent, and instead have had to bring it up right away. Right now both worlds 1) the harvest young talent 2) buy a chipper are struggling and firing torre or cashman is not the answer.

nobody needs to get fired...

They went into this season with exactly the team they wanted... all the way around...

Keep Torre and get Hughes healthy and Clemens up to speed. Dump Abreu - his tank is empty.

Abreu emptied his tank in the Home Run derby. He was never the same after that. I think it's harder to manage a talented team than a team with no talent.

The Yankee's are going to win plenty of games this year... (Like they do every year)

it's just going to take a huge effort to get into either race (Wild card or division) but they will win games with that line-up

The minor league system is not bare. They've been forced to use minor league pitchers this year who have done ok and had freak injuries.

The problems is that they get veterans who are past their prime when they get to the club.

Firing Torre would be a foolish move of desperation. I gaurantee the Yankees will make the playoffs this year if he stays. If not, they'll plunge into chaos. While that might make for interesting theater, their is no way to blame this on Torre. True, the S&C guy needed to go, but I am not aware of any problems with his managerial decisions and he is able to manager the personalities. If the Yankees fire Torre it will just underscore the belief of most all baseball fans not fond of them that they are win at all costs crybabies.

Not sure I agree with your guarantee that the Yankees will make the playoffs this year, but everything else is spot on.

Torre did not pick the players...in fact, there is some indication he opposed some of the non-productive all-star acqusitions.

Unfortunately, you can't fire the Big Stein...you just hope that vein in his forehead doesn't burst while you are in the vicinity...
